I'm so grateful to have this wonderful opportunity to work such a unique job. For me, the most rewarding aspect is to safely transport passengers to their final destination and to see them greeted by a friend, a family member or a loved one. @@Darkflower071482 The training program for the LIRR consists of a cognitive test, a Signals and Definitions pre-employment test, a 6 week pre-employment Rules exam, and if you pass all three of those, you enter a 14 month compensated training program. There were 16 exams from start to finish. It was an exceptionally difficult process. To put into perspective how difficult, 3k people applied the same time I did. Out of that, 116 of us were invited to my Locomotive Engineer Trainee Overview. 46 of us passed the cognitive test. I was the only one to pass the following Signals and Definitions test. So out of 3k people, only 1 made it into the 6 week pre-employment rules exam. My 14 month training class had 10 people pooled from 4 separate overviews, and 9 of us passed the final 14 month program. Looking back, the process felt more like a prison sentence. You can't really do anything else with your life but study for the entire process. Two of my classmates got divorces during the training.
