ABD stands for all but dissertation. This is the stage where you have completed your course work and your comprehensive exams. Now, the only thing you have to do is your dissertation.
I would argue that being ABD is the most challenging stage of your PhD. You will feel a number of things at this stage:
1. Alone. You will feel very alone during your ABD stage because there are very few people in the world that is working on the same problem that you are working on.
2. Uncertain. You will have to make a lot of decisions by yourself with the research process, and so you will feel very uncertain. Indeed, most research is filled with decisions, and none of them are right and none of them are wrong. You just have to pick the choice and move on.
3. Incorrect. You will often feel that you are doing things incorrectly because you have a lot of pressure about being an embarrassment in science. You don’t want to look like a hack.
4. Despair. You will feel a lot of despair because this is the moment where you put in a lot of work, and it feels like you will never get a job. It is an awful feeling, but it is actually quite normal.
5. Relieved. Although you have all of these negative feelings, you still feel like you have completed a lot of work, and you are relieved that the work before comps are complete.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
