When a patient is diagnosed with scoliosis, what scoliosis feels like is not discussed more often than not. What patients do know and are educated on is the degree of their curvature and, based on this, what category of scoliosis they have, mild (10-25 degrees), moderate (25-40 degrees), or severe (40 degrees or more).
Each curve is unique due to a wide range of factors that influence its development, such as the patient's age and flexibility. Depending on these and many other factors, scoliosis will feel different for each patient.
The most common question in regards to how scoliosis feels is, can it cause pain? And the answer is maybe. It will depend on each individual case.
It is rare for scoliosis pain to occur for adolescents, and if it ever does, it is a dull ache on the site of their curvature. If an adolescent ever experiences a lot of pain, it signals that something else is wrong with their body. However, in adults, scoliosis pain is common because their curve grows due to the compression of gravity over time in their spine.
A feeling of stiffness is more common in both age groups with scoliosis, and it is often related to the size of the curve.
Patients can also experience a feeling of being weighed down and fatigue overall. This happens due to the asymmetrical load in their body caused by their scoliosis.
In addition to these physical symptoms, there can also be an emotional effect. Because of the asymmetry seen in the mirror, sometimes clothes don't fit just right, creating feelings of emotional distress. This is often the case with teen patients because they are not as cosmetically symmetrical as their peers due to the asymmetry of their curve.
The best way to deal with all these physical and emotional feelings is to reduce the curve. In younger patients who treat their scoliosis, when they put in the work and start to see an improvement, it has a positive effect on the emotional aspects of their scoliosis. For adults, there is an improvement in their pain levels, and mobility is regained in most cases.
