I use to have an issue when people would say "the church is true", because all churches have truth to one degree or another. I use to even correct people and tell them that though the church has the most truth, that doesn't mean that it is the only organization with truth. But then I began to understand that the church is really nothing but a tool to help us understand and learn the gospel better. Therefore if you think of how a tool can be true, the church can be compared tools like a hammer or a level. A hammer being true means that it hits it's mark, and a level being true means it is accurate. And as a carpenter that resonated with me. It still kinda rubs me wrong when people equate the church with the gospel, because they are not interchangable things, but I've become less annoyed when I hear it.

@@davidjanbaz7728 I think you are too literal and robotic in your approach to the gospel. who do you think the "Lamb of God" is? He is Jesus Christ. and what dispensation are we in, in these latter days? the "Latter-day" dispensation. so it still makes perfect doctrinal and logical sense that the chosen vessel which Christ picked to house His authority and the fullest measure of His teachings and doctrines, would be called the Church of Jesus Christ, [which is comprised] of latter-day saints. not to mention the fact that at the time when Nephi taught about the 2 churches (1 Nephi 14:10) they didn't even know what the name of the lamb of God would be. so of course they would just call Him the Lamb of God, or Savior or Messiah, or some other title that has been given to Jesus Christ throughout history. But ultimately the explanation or description of the two churches is one of symbolism and representative spirituality. therefore, it isn't the name of the churches given, but the leaders who are over those two churches, and who those churches are designed and created to worship and praise. So, while I agree that while there is in fact only two churches in an ethereal, metaphysical, pattern of worship and practice, that still doesn't mean that teachings of those two types of churches, cannot still be found in many institutions. it is not as cut and dry (robotic/binary) as you would like to make it out to be. and I'm sure that you are only making it out to be that way, because you have an axe to grind, so any way you can manipulate and skew the true doctrines to make them seem against the LDS church the more proud of yourself you are, but it is theologically disingenuous, and intellectually dishonest.

I haven't read the part in the CES letter where Jeremy Runnells talks about feeling "the spirit" during the Lion King, but the point to make from that is the fact that he didn't know what it was "the spirit" was testifying to him. In other words, we can have these feelings that we have trained ourselves to identify as "holy spirit" feelings, but if we don't actually know what it is this holy spirit is actually trying to communicate to us, it renders one of the primary functions of the spirit useless and unreliable. It's easy to come up with a likely message for what those feelings would be directed towards when sitting in a chapel or around the fire at a father's and son's outing where everyone is bearing their testimony. But outside of those more applicable and relevant contexts, the person has to do a lot more searching and deciphering of the context at hand and any messages being audibly communicated in order to come up with something that a "holy spirit" would likely be testifying of. And this unreliable direction in divine messaging can lead to questioning one's interpretation of the feelings _themselves_ as being from a "holy spirit", which is what's particularly condemning to this whole internal system of thought. Because if you can't tell the difference between when the spirit is speaking to you or if it's just your own personal agreement with a message (or scene from a movie), then you can't claim knowledge about a spirit actually existing and speaking to you. You would have to acknowledge to yourself that you aren't rationally justified in that knowledge claim, which would also call into question your testimony (being a collection of claims whose veracity were allegedly communicated to you through these same feelings) as well as the process by which a person acquires a testimony (read and pray method, for example). If these feelings demonstrably lead to unclear communication, then their claim to giving you knowledge of anything will have necessarily been falsified, which is essentially a falsification of your belief about the nature of those feelings. edit: Having said that, if the argument is that the spirit could testify of something to you, but it just wants you to figure out what it's testifying of, (so you'll... appreciate the message more?), how could you tell the difference between that scenario and the scenario in which no holy spirit exists and you're trying to find a way to validate your beliefs about a holy spirit speaking to you?
@six1nyne
3 жыл бұрын
Their is no world where the holy spirit doesn't exist bro. The earth itself was created first spiritually. So everything in it is capable of testifying of the risen lord and his eternal truths. The hardest part about feeling the holy spirit is dicerning what it is trying to communicate. But if it makes u stop and have a charitable thought or feeling whatever ur doing god condones. The spirit is felt when one is contemplative or pondering, when one is seeking or when one hears an eternal truth. For example in the lion king it would be easy for a spiritual witness of the truth of "remember who u are". When god said to Jeremiah before i formed thee in the belly i knew thee. Remeber who u are. Or king follet discourse that u have to learn to become gods. Then when simba is contemplating the stars his choices that has led him to this moment where he shares the wisdom of his father that the stars are past king well a mormon would think past gods right or kings art thou a king then my kingdom is not of this world. So ex mormons forget that tho they have left the fold of god. god has not left them they were baptized and recieved the gift of the holy ghost and u know being ex that its a constant companion if we keep the commandments of god. Its sole job is to remind u and testify to u that god lives that his son is jesus christ and that u are a child of god. It will not strive with u cause it cannot but it will tell u from time to time remember who u are. Then the music drops forget about ur gonna catch it in the feels. Even a never mo because the light of christ lights the whole creation of earth. For he is the light and life of the party. Get Gd up from the feet up.

@@six1nyne You're whole argument presumes the existence of a "holy spirit". That's precisely the thing that Jeremy Runnells was calling into question. You don't just get to assert things into existence and then pull your beliefs up by their bootstraps through interpretation of your experiences. In the case of your interpretation of an experience while watching the Lion King, how would you tell the difference between a message in the movie reminding you of beliefs you have been indoctrinated into believing that aren't actually true, and a holy spirit actually existing and "testifying" of "truths" to you? Being a dogmatic member of the church, you know that you can't afford to entertain the possibility of some experience falsifying your beliefs about a holy spirit existing and speaking to you, so you HAVE to interpret every and any event that gives you "holy spirit feelings" as actually being from a holy spirit. Unfalsifiability gives is the illusion of security and validation that fake beliefs seek. Credible beliefs welcome the attempts at falsification.

When people say, "the only true and living church on the Earth", the best understanding of the "...and living" part is that it's basically an acknowledgement of "the great apostasy". The primitive church was also the true church but, according to LDS doctrine, it was discontinued because of widespread apostasy. The LDS church today, as it is claimed by its believers, is not only the one church with the real priesthood power to perform and authenticate saving/exalting ordinances, but it is also the only one of all of the true churches that have ever been established by Jesus that "lives" today, or that is in tact and operational on the Earth. Faith in absence of evidence is one thing. But everything you guys talked about seems to boil down to having faith in spite of evidence. If someone is having a faith crisis - meet them where they're at instead of reverting to "remember how you felt that one time when you read the B.O.M." How can you rat on Jeremy Runnels or John Dehlin for bringing up feeling the spirit while watching the muppets or the lion king while not even a minute or two prior commenting on feeling the spirit from a Justin Bieber song? Not everyone who questions the church or it's history and the many valid concerns that arise from doing so is doing it because they want to play golf and drink beer on Sundays. There wasn't much of any substance to the question in the title of this video other than everyone seeming to stroke each other on how you were exposed to other faiths and seemed to come out with stronger testimonies of the Mormon church. For someone who wants to find reason to maintain their faith, this wasn't the best of takes. I respect the humor though. Comparing the feeling of the spirit to bacon was a good chuckle.

What the phrase "I know the church is true" objectively means is that it's the only church that has the priesthood authority to perform ordinances which qualify you for salvation and exaltation. It is also a phrase that means that they "know" that the general narrative of the church is true. All of the things listed above are problematic btw. First of all, there are no manuscripts that I know of that say that people need ordinances in order to be saved. It's in the Bible but as we know, the Bible is made up entirely of documents, not manuscripts, and those documents have been HEAVILY altered throughout the centuries, primarily by the Catholic Church. So other than the Bible, there is no real evidence that Christ taught us that we need ordinances in order to be saved. In fact, most of his teachings seem to indicate the opposite, since the idea of being strictly obedient and obsessing over baptism, confirmation, temple handshakes, and the Sacrament are somewhat contradictory to Christ's main message of "It's about the spirit of the law, not the letter of the law". Lds doctrine states that Christ's atonement has no power unless you first receive the saving ordinances through their authority, which is why all people must be baptized and confirmed int he Spirit World. This idea inherently makes Christ's atonement kind of meaningless to a certain degree (or rather, significantly less important, and more of a side thing), since it's more of a backup plan since you won't be able to be perfect, even though you're supposed to try to be. The REAL thing that saves you in mormonism is the ordinances and your strict obedience. The atonement is like an insurance company that you have to pay into or else it won't cover you. It's vastly different than what is taught in the Bible. Put simply: The church's "authority" only matters if you believe that ordinances save you and qualify you for salvation and exaltation, and that idea inherently goes against Christ's teachings from what I can tell. The idea of saving ordinances is the only thing that makes the church relevant as well, which is kind of sketchy in my opinion, and it would explain why the church leaders are always making sure to remind people about their ordinances and covenants (they focus on other stuff too but it's undoubtedly their main focus, which is why we go on missions -- to baptize people so they can get the other saving ordinances). It's why we do baptisms for the dead. Also, you can just read the CES Letter if you want to know why the narrative of the church is problematic.
