+LittleGojira, head gasket sealer in a bottle does not work. Maybe short term, but long term it wont work and this will happen. I think the person who sold the car to me did this and after a few months the leak got worse until it gave way and the engine blew.

These sealers (quick fixes) were invented during world wars to get military equipment (such as tanks and other heavy machinery) to a safe place. These liquids are all SHORT-term fixes and should NEVER be used on your vehicle... Unless you need to sell it quick. I mean really quick =)

"it didnt work for me so it mustn't work for anyone" You are incorrect, Certain brands of stop leak do work and they work very well. Its effectiveness will be determined by how advanced the warping is, but it has worked for me on multiple occasions so dont go making shit up based on un informed anecdotal evidence. Only stop leak that actually works well is Rislone's Block seal head gasket fix. I Used it to temporarily keep my run around honda from overheating until i found time to change the gasket, but it worked so well i still havent done it yet.

My Cobra had a headgasket leak and i used blue devil since i only drove the car local and to work and it stopped the smoke and never overheated. Im glad it didnt destroy my bottom end. My cars in the shop and i just had a 5 angle head job on the heads they were warped btw cause my block and heads are all aluminum,while the car was down and i saved money all that time i added a bunch of mods and rebuilt my t-45 transmission plus painted engine and calipers parts while the car was down. Wow I was surprised to see the cross hatching in the truck. Kudos on the care of that engine. New engine time for the PT Cruiser (shit car with shit engine). I wouldn't even bother with a rebuild on this engine. The scoring on the wall of cylinder 3 was awful. It may have taken off too much material from the wall to ever work right again. I would say just not worth a rebuild unless doing it for fun but you may end up needing a cylinder sleeve to get it back into spec. But who knows until its all the way down and you have done your measuring. Cool little camera and cool video. Thanks for sharing.

Very informative video! I just bought a new car and it smokes a lot. Most E46 owners say it's due to the ccv being clogged up. So I checked with a bore scope, only carbon build up with blacked top of spark plugs.. compression test 185, 175, 175, 155, 162,5 and 162,5 psi so yeah a bit of. with 13% difference between 1st and 6th cylinder. Factory compression should be between 140-150... So cylinder 1, 2 and 3 might have more carbon build up due to being close to ccv inlet...? I wonder... I guess I'll have to use some injection cleaner in those cylinders... Thanks Chris! You've helped me a lot!!

On some cars the repair manual clearly forbids turning the engine from the cam shaft. They usually advise for turning from the crankshaft. Not sure why, maybe not to overstress the timing belt tensioner. You could also take a look at the sparkplugs. Maybe some specific marks from piston melting, headgasket failure are also present on them.

ChrisFix If you're interested, I write a lot of articles about cars and one of my most exciting one was the results of water decarbonization. Or, I should say, it was the most excited I've gotten from the results before I wrote the article. I don't have a bore scope, but it made each of my cylinders appear to run at the same temperature. Prior to the water decarbonization I had on my metal intake (each intake tube is seperate and not touching) running about the same Celcius except cylinder no. 1 was several degrees higher. Afterwards they were all the same temp.! I took a good drive and came back and my laser pointed infrared thermometer still read them all the same! I could really feel the difference too. Cylinder 1 had a leaking injector and after a new set it was still running hotter so I tried this method. I have a lot more to say, but I'll share the article link if you'd like it before I sit hit and write the whole thing again, lol.

Nice article. I would not consider the torque app accurate at all. It is fun to play and it might give you am estimate but it is not something serious. Your 5hp even on a dyno means nothing because there is so many variables. The temperature readings are a neat way to go about it. Did you take the temperature right after spraying all the water or did you run the car for a day?

Wow that's terrifying. I drove about 2-3 months with a bad head gasket. I overheated to red or past. I had pits in my heads, and needed them machined. That was it. I can't believe how lucky I am.

I wanted to try the decarbonizing method with water for some time now. Im still not sure if its safe or not...so this would be a great video for me to really see the difference it makes!
@chrisfix

Na izi Yea, it is safe if you do it the right way. I am more curious if it actually does anything. Sure, a long term drip like in a head gasket will clean out a cylinder, but will spraying some water into your intake really do anything? I will have to test it out.

I have had a few 2 stroke motorbike engines seize and overheat I even turned one of the pistons into a paperweight and cut a section out to show the small end bearing. Luckily on my car engines I have never had a head gasket go and an engine overheat though I have burnt out exhaust valves in the past. You will have to see if you can get your scope inside a crankcase and have a look maybe through the oil pressure switch hole.
@chrisfix

fastmongrel That is a good idea! I like the piston paperweight idea. If I had a man-cave I would make a table out of the engine and pistons like on Top Gear!

use borescope to check inside of your ears for cleanliness and wood stove chimney pipe as well! also good to remove oxygen sensor and inspect catalyst for damage.

Try STP fuel injector cleaner, the concerted kind in the black bottle, and run a couple back to back. I got 82k miles on my 2011 G37S and I used 2 in a row and the Piston heads are 90% totally clean. Zero carbon or varnish on the heads just a small black spot then bare metal.

I can give you a top tip for this video ... When the engine is overheating, you will see the engine temperature going up. 100 degrees Celsius is the water's boiling point ... it means bye bye engine.
@chrisfix

Yep! Unfortunately when you are on the highway and want to safely get over, it can take a few seconds before you can shut the engine.

you should not be able to see the piston ring at all unless your borescope has a magnification option that can see between a gap that measures .030 or more and the depth of close to 1/8th of an inch deep where the top compression ring is
@chrisfix
7 жыл бұрын
+John Cook I'm pretty sure the ring came off and moved up the piston
@TwisNinja
7 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix that would mean a broken crown or ring landing both of which would result in significant damage to the cylinder/head/piston only way that can happen is if the rings were gapped too tight and thermal expansion would cause them to butt ends with nowhere to go ring gap needs to be loose for thermal expansion crosshatching is there to keep them spinning while engine is running to disperse heat into the cooling jackets then there's is torsional flex which allows blow by and compression opening and closing the gaps between the rings and ring landings
