surprised you covered this as it seems to get overlooked in their catalogue. one of my personal favorites from them

Such an unhappy song, especially given the context of the lyrics, and I agree, not talked about enough

Since you mentioned the atmospheric nature of the track, I'd recommend Eyes of Ebony from their latest album Fauna.

Haken tends to do one or two of these more atmospheric songs in each album and they tend to be some of my favorites with the epics of course. (Aquarius) Aquarium, Sun (Visons) Deathless, (The Mountain has a few) Because It's There, As Death Embraces, Somebody, (Restoration) Earthlings, (Affinity) Red Giant, Bound By Gravity, (Vector) Host, (Virus) Canary Yellow, (Fauna) Eyes of Ebony.

Big fan of haken, this track and crystallized from the same EP are some of my favorite songs of theirs personally. Crystallized is a 22 minute epic that has all sorts of cool sections from the more playful side of earlier haken, but this has an extra emotional connection for me as it's the reason I went vegan. I had listened to the track a bunch of times and loved it for its particularly haunting sound, but without ever reading or paying close attention to the lyrics. Finally read them one day and just... couldn't get it out of my head for days. The horror of it all finally stuck for me and I had to make a change. The song really gets across for me the complicated emotional mix of both the animals perspective, and of the human despair, helplessness, numbness of knowing that the animals suffer, while also knowing that even if I no longer support it, there's nothing I can do to stop it all. Just forced to know and witness the horror from a distance. I think what you said at 23:34 is a good description of the feeling from the perspective of the animals, "waiting, anticipation, tension from waiting for a moment", it's the tension of waiting for their inevitable deaths. The second "more haken" section or so is more of the human side of things, so the change in style reflects partly a viewpoint shift I think.

Haken, is more popular for the songs you haven't touched yet! Depending on the time, to recognize their classics, I'd suggest songs that are older and tried more. Celestial Elixir, Visions, Crystallized, Pareidolia, Falling Back To Earth, Cockroach King and The Architect, are all considered classics to me!

He did the entire Affinity album, so at least The Architect has been covered, if you haven't seen it yet. Would love to see a reaction to Visions!

Crystalised is off of this EP (about 32 minutes), and it is EPIC! I mean, what other band can produce another Seinfeld bass theme?! 😂

Nice! one of my favorites by them! They have some other songs that have more focus on the atmosphere: Somebody (from the Mountain), Sun (from Aquarius), Host (from Vector), among others

Would love a full album analysis of The Ocean's latest album eventually, very atmospheric, synthy, still gets heavy in classic The Ocean fashion but would love to hear you react to some of the choices they made on it

This was, for me, the end of Haken's best period that stretched from their first album in 2010 to this EP in 2014. That's when I thought they had their best mixture of classic and modern prog influences before they switched to a more purely contemporary prog metal style afterwards influenced by djent. The albums afterwards weren't bad by any means, but I have seen them as a step down from where they started. This particular song really shows off their atmospheric and emotive side. Reminds me a bit of Leprous, and that's rarely a bad thing for me!

I think at 2:56 the bass adding to the song gives it a completely different atmosphere, like in the first verse (1:15) the actual fundamental note for each part was unknown and the “harmony” was just kinda oscillating between the same note, but in the second verse as the bass adds it now shows movement. I was expecting you to talk about that 😅

They're definitely worth it, but they do have two distinct periods: their first 3 albums (and this EP) are more an eclectic mix of classic and modern prog influences, while their last four albums are heavier and more contemporary metal. I prefer the first period, but it's all good. The Mountain is probably my favorite from them front-to-back.
