Your stool tells a lot about the state of your health and you should know what is normal and steps to take if it isn't ideal.
Why is it so important? Your gut contains 70% of your immune system. Additionally, the organisms in the gut or microbiome, can move your body towards health or disease depending on the types of organisms present. Factually, we avoid diseases and conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disease and cognitive decline by optimizing our gut health.
The Bristol Stool Chart was created in the 1990s after research done in Bristol, England. The chart moves through 7 types of stool, from 1, severe constipation to 7, liquid diarrhea. 4 is considered ideal, smooth, soft, easy to pass and the shape of a sausage or banana. 3 shows some cracks and crevices and is mildly constipated but should readily be improved with more water consumption, increased fiber in the diet, and more exercise.
The color of stool is also important, ranging from white to black, with yellow, green and red in between. Brown is normal and the brown color comes from bile. None of the other colors are normal other than green could be from drinking green smoothies, reddish from eating beets and black from taking bismuth (Pepto-Bismol), otherwise all the non-brown colors should be investigated with your doctor.
Here at Root Cause I find a high incidence of constipation in my patients. Often abnormal bowels harken back to childhood with the patient unaware that their bowel movements are abnormal.
It's certainly not "dinner" conversation but I think it's a good idea to share this knowledge with your children and significant others so that we can help to share understanding of what normal bowels are.
