black girl luxury should be: being healthy, having a good job and being financially stable, being confident and having high self worth and self-esteem, not proving yourself to anybody, enjoying rich loving relationships and supportive extensive networks, having a rich inner world, being able to afford everything that you need, having a big pension pot...

When you say luxury, it implies that it is not a necessity. Being healthy, financially stable, having a good job and loving relationships are necessary to have a good quality of life in this world. It may seem like luxury because of the current state of the community/world but it should be the bare minimum. For example, having clean drinking water could be seen as a luxury. But it's not. It's a human right that many people don't have, and we need to do better to ensure everyone has that right. I would say that calling those things luxury, especially 'black' girl luxury is actually very dangerous. You're implying that black girls don't need to be healthy, they don't need to have high self worth...it's just a plus, or a 'luxury' if they do. Luxury would be being able to afford the most expensive foods and health treatments, it would be not having to work at all and still being financially stable because you've inherited all your money, or have successfully invested.

My biggest issue is that Black Girl Luxury quickly became quite narrow and centered the same brands and aesthetic without intention from many of the participants. We absolutely deserve luxury, but the more you truly understand what you’re buying into, the more intentional it becomes. BGL says “we can and do engage in luxury too” but when we do that for the sole purpose of participation without questioning do we even like/value it, who are we trying to convince?

my main issue with “black girl luxury” has definitely been the pro-capitalist & pro-consumerism aspects, in addition to some underlying Eurocentric attitudes in terms of content about aesthetics. That being said, I’m very much for Black women investing in a high quality lifestyle in terms of health, safety, financial security, partnership, and even beauty & fashion. There are so many levels between struggling and splurging, and they don’t get discussed enough (online, at least). I would say I’m about “black girl high quality” but that doesn’t ring the same lol.

People don't just go from the bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy to the top. At least most people do not. It's good to also preach the message of self actualization and introspection and building in secret etc...but this wanting to participate is quite natural. People want to be seen. People need validation. It's a human thing. Nobody goes about frowning when someone pays them a sincere compliment. Should people try to balance out the need for external validation with internal one? Definitely. But, when people have been associated with poverty, it only makes sense that any small coins they have, they want to escape that image. Even people who don't have any idea about online trends, older people around me, I see this behavior in them. They've suffered all their lives, their parents couldn't buy them decent clothes...when they eventually have, they want to shed that image. I wish there was more empathy for black women...more trying to understand. And, more gentle guidance. Black women often bear the brunt of harsh judgements. The other day, there was a TikTok compilation about beautiful black women and some people were like, "ooh, they are wearing weaves. Oh, underneath that makeup, they are basic..." As if other groups of women don't wear weaves and makeup. Black women are held to standards that other people aren't necessarily. Other people won't bat an eyelid when a certain type of people show off like this. Infact black people would watch reality shows of other people showing off extreme wealth and not bat an eyelid but when it's a black women trying to show off what little Hermes purse or something she has, the black community comes out with pitch forks. Black women are creating their own niches because they've been mostly excluded for decades. Not all black women are partakers of BGL. Including me. But, I understand it. Does this mean you should use all your pennies to buy some brand product to show off on the internet so you can feel valid? No. But, let's empathize. Not everything black women do has to be politicized and turned to think pieces.

Luxury is not the word to use if we just mean “better wellbeing”. Everything is political. Having a soft life in a capitalist society is only capable when there’s a labor class that makes that possible. You need women in sweat shops to make your designer clothes. The hotel staff in Jamaican resorts are working through a lockdown while we’re super spreading. Politics shouldn’t be seen as negative and ignoring them is how we end up oppressing other. BW deserve empathy for wanting things others want, but we’re not above critique. Nobody has perfect politic so what is the harm in discussing it? I'm a bit late but this is an interesting topic maybe to do a video on. I am mixed race (b/w) and I never understood why blackness has to have it's own categorization system for everything- it's something no other racial/cultural/nationality/even religion has. You don't see "Asian women luxury" or "Latin Excellence" or "the Middle Eastern Elite", these specific naming conventions/labels for everything, they just exist in their state. I understand there is a contextual history of segregation, but is continuing to seperate out Black-specific labels empowering or further perpetuating otherness. When does labels other groups don't have create further isolation from the ultimate goals. Are Black people creating these labels for themselves like "Black Excellence", "Black Girl Luxury" perpetuating the divide and making a subgenre of Excellence or Luxury required to acheive success to a subjective degree like it's own measurement stick. I can see both sides and the history, I just am not convinced the continued specific labeling is objectively helping Black folks rise

On the video - Black GIRL luxury, using the word girl suggests an infantilization of the luxury, like she is playing rich girl. It's like Girlboss where it gives the impression of not actually being a boss, but acting like one and now seen as a negative word. Great analysis on the video btw, very thoughtful

I agree. While I am African and obviously don’t understand the context of these labels as per the African Americans and Black Europeans demographic (I presume AA are the ones that started most of these movements). I think labeling certain realities “black” is counterproductive. I completely love that black women worldwide are choosing themselves and going for luxury over struggle. At the same time, It is my belief that luxury is luxury and excellence is excellence. The terms “Black girl luxury” and “Black excellence” suggest that excellence and luxury are not a norm here but more of an exception. Millions of Black People worldwide are leading luxurious lives and excelling in their fields, including here in Africa. Still, there is space for everything and I’m sure some black people online see the movements and finally start believing in themselves and understanding that they too can live a happy, beautiful life.

We want access to the same things but we’re not critiquing what that access means. Everybody is not going to address it with empathy for BW or even care to critique it, but we’re getting even more sucked into the capitalist bs acting like it’s going to repair our image. People are going to hate us regardless. It’s not our job to change peoples minds, and luxury still is not going to be accessible to most people. This is very much a we ain’t free until we all free thing in my opinion. That’s not everyone’s priority and that’s cool but luxury has a very specific meaning and it’s exclusionary in nature. And when anyone tries to address it the definition changes. A bath with cheap bubbles may be a luxury for me, but it’s not a $300 perfume (which is what the BGL trend claims as a talking point, showing people that we can afford outrageously priced things because we’re “worth it” and have earned it or whatever). It is weird to me that Black women whose bodies have been commodified feel like we’re obtaining value through material things. It’s oddly dehumanizing.

Black girl luxury in the North American context i assume would be things black people (women) in the inner cities (hoods) didnt have access to due to poverty. Items and lifestyles, (not necessities) that were enjoyed by richer white women. Now, black women can afford these luxuries due to the change in income distribution. Not all black women are broke or keeping up. Many have made it. I see it as a celebration of how far black women have come by and enjoying things they would never had dreamt of given their background. A movement like the black magic, black girls rock etc. Many black women were never spoilt with the "soft life" like their white counterparts (given the history of slavery, to working as domestic workers for white women then low paying jobs in the hood).Black women often had/have to work 2+ jobs to support their families. Suffering has been our portion for so long unlike white women whose white husband's have held all the financial and social power in society therefore affording a luxurious life for their wives. White women basically had more social power and access to this life. Black women are now realizing that it's ok to also be spoilt. To have more than just the basic life necessities. Idk,that's how I see it. If you can afford luxuries, good for you, enjoy it. If you can't, too bad. Don't try to keep up.

When you enjoy luxury regardless of race you can receive judgement from friends, work and family in your personal circle so you may not want to share it with them.. there’s plenty of videos about it.. so using the hashtag to find like minded people who enjoy luxury seeing unboxing, fine dinning etc. by black women is nice and as you can see from the negative comments the judgement around luxury can trigger people now add black women in the mix.. but for me it’s just a place to share clips of your life and hopefully like minded women who look like similar things can enjoy it’s not meant trigger people
