I could’ve let this monstera live in water forever but I decided to make the switch. For this soil mix, I’m using @solsoils house plant mix -use code PlantsKrystal10 for 10% off. The most common question was, why did I chose to not just break apart the root ball? If you look closer, you may see the crispy leaves, there were some stems with discoloration, and the remaining leaves were not forming well. So I made the decision to start again, regrow the roots, and watch it’s progress. I love trying different ways to grow my rescues! When transitioning from water to soil, the first two weeks, (with a well draining mix) keep the soil moist. That will help the plant acclimate to its different environment.

Fun fact Mosteras actually have a front and a back to their vine! If you look at the nodes you'll see the aerial roots all come from one side of the stem and the leaves continue on the other side. When repotting, especially if you're trying to stake it up to grow vertical, you don't want to go by the direction the leaves are facing because they'll twist any direction to find the sun. You want to determine the direction of the petioles and if there are aerial roots formed, place them against the wood or moss. Happy planting!

Is there a reason to not just cut the root ball in half with like an old bread knife? Soak it in water to loosen up anything that's not still attached, and i feel like you'll have a MUCH easier time detangling (longest segment can only be like 4") and also have a good root foundation.

A $2 orchid came home with me a few days ago because of this channel, and it’s been a real comfort to me. It’s been a really rough year, culminating in my father’s death a few weeks ago. The last three years my father battled dementia. It was utterly soul crushing to navigate the pandemic with small children and a father who was my best friend becoming a ghost of himself. We lost him at the end of April and while I thought I would feel relief that his suffering was over, I was not ready for how huge the grief has been. This channel has been a comfort to me. Then shopping at Kroger I saw a $2 orchid on clearance. After buying a stand, a pot, from Goodwill, the succulent repotting tools from your Amazon store (I have the poking tool now!)some orchid soil from Kroger my $2 orchid became a $30 orchid. But I set it up and have been caring for it. I feel like I did it wrong. Like I both cut off too many roots but also left too many white ones. But a week later it’s still alive. It has brought me so much joy, and is this subtle reminder that if I can value and care for a $2 orchid, I should also value an care for myself. Even if I feel like I have rot in my heart right now, it’s treatable. I just need some nutrients and light. So thank you. ❤
