This is all so true. I'm fed up of watching edc videos, normally from the us, where the guy has a huge bag, 4 ways to start a fire, a length of rope, 6 knives all illegal to carry in the UK, a gun, a spare gun, gps, flares, snare wire, a battery pack, etc, etc. The fact it's every day carry doesn't mean you don't change what you carry to suit the environment. I have an edc when I am.local to home and/or my car, another for longer trips, another for when I'm out in the countryside

I guess affordability is a relative term. I have an unnecessary number of expensive knives, but I carry and use them for knife things. I don't want to presume to speak for anybody, but I gathered from your vid that you don't understand the person who spends $500 on a knife or a $1000 on a watch or flashlight and locks them behind glass or doesn't carry them for fear they could get scratched or damaged. I carry plenty of expensive items in case I need them during the course of the day, however, it's also a hobby and I also have a collector's mindset for certain things. I guess people buy and collect certain things, like any hobby because it brings them a certain level of enjoyment. Like anything people can go overboard, and if one is spending their family's mortgage payment or food money on items they can't afford then that individual should reexamine their behavior. Otherwise I say do what makes you happy.

the rolex submariner watch analogy isnt right. Just because its a rolex. who knows what that spyderco knife is going to be worth 20 years from now but that rolex isnt going to be worth any less.

I agree but a nicer item or two is ok as well. Having said that I'm only carrying modestly priced gear at the moment. It also works great too.

Stunning, and brave. In certain corners of the EDC community, I've been shut down for less.

I have a large (ridiculous) number of Swiss Army Knives and I carry a 91mm or 85mm, and a 58mm every day. I beat the heck out of them. On the other hand I have some rare models or special colors and limited editions as well. They don't cost thousands but some cost quite a bit (for me at least). I don't carry those. Some day they may be sold or go to a relative, but they are for collecting, not for carry. I don't see anything wrong with having a Sebenza or a Rolex if you can afford it, although I probably wouldn't. I don't see anything wrong with keeping a special item under glass. But "it takes all kinds to make a world".

I agree, purpose first and foremost, function second, and form comes last. It would be interesting to hear your take and others on the subject of defining purpose or just being a pack rat with edc gear. Just something I've been thinking about lately seeing ridiculously redundant edc tool kits that look more like an excuse to find a use for things never used. We're all guilty of this to some degree, but reality checks are necessary from time to time lol.

I agree on items having purpose and being used. I don't agree that everything has to be affordable so to speak. I'd never buy a 12K Rolex Submariner either but I understand why someone would. I think if someone loves knives and wants to buy a $600 Sabenza then why not. Collecting is a thing and if it's meaningful to the person buying it I'm all for it. That being said there are certain items and brands that feel like pure hype and never woth the money. The James Brands and Big Idea design stuff for example.

My EDC is cheap. Ultra cheap. I often have seizures in public, and it is not unusual that all my stuff has been stolen before I recover.

I think it's great that you are able to use the less expensive gear. My gear is inexpensive but for different reasons. I also have to say that anyone who stole from you, while you were vulnerable due to a medical condition, is a piece of excrement.
