Wasn't always that way. This is going a way back, now. But early in the Crosby vs. Ovie rivalry, I remember a game where Crosby was talking to the ref after a Penguins penalty. And Beninati, very smugly and snidely, said, "Thanks for your help, counsellor," insulting Crosby. And this was a national broadcast, not the Caps feed. And I'm just sitting there like, "Crosby's the captain, you jackass. He's allowed to talk to the ref." And after the game, someone asked Crosby about it, and he said he was just asking the ref for a clarification on the rule. So, Beninati was leaning into this "Crosby's a whiner" thing on a national tv broadcast. And Crosby was just asking the ref about some detail of the rule, which he had every right to do. So it was just a homer insult, for no good reason.

Nice to see Dano get some love on here. He's so emotionally invested in the team, but is pretty impartial when it comes to analyzing penalty calls against either team

He also doesn't hesitate to criticize the Devils when they're not going good. He won't go out and kill them with stuff like "they really suck tonight", like fans in the stands might, but he'll call them out. Not all local guys will do that.

Dave Strader....one of the best! When I heard he was gonna be Dallas' PBP guy after Ralph Strangis left, it felt like we hit the big time. And you knew he was really into seeing the team succeed. Gone way too soon!

One thing I like about the Pens broadcast (idk if others do it) is that they will show the parlay thing and then use that to talk about whatever player or team performance that the parlay is based on. Like Crosby 3+ shots will be one, and then they'll talk about the top line's chance creation or something

When Mick isnt in the booth, i think Ozzy is another one of those that has really developed over time. When they tried him the first couple of years he seemed kinda shy, but as he's spent more time on the intermission report and in the booth, his personality has really come out. I really like it when its a group of guys who love the game and are also just buds. I really miss Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk for that too.
@deBebbler

When he first started, Ozzy used to finish talking and stare straight through the camera without moving until the intermission segment ended. It always had me howling, because it was so awkward. You're right about him being much improved, though. He's a lot of fun, now.

For me, Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda are gold. They even have some good hockey comedy and even like to joke around with each other. My other favorite is Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond. Those two have great chemistry and great catch phrases. The Sharks and Red Wings have been blessed with legendary broadcasters.

For me Bob Kurtz was absolutely amazing, perfect voice, great chemistry between him and Tom Reid, and most importantly they explained the game really well and with passion. Its so refreshing to hear “Yeah, that’s a fairly weak call, but we will take it!”. I cant listen to a complete homer cast like “Holy Jumpin’ how is that a penalty? He just hit him from behind”

LaPanta and Carter are great for Minnesota, because it's just such a different energy. The few times I've watched other broadcasts I was surprised how animated and consistenly partial they were, to an almost comical degree (looking at you Canada and East Coast). I imagine it might be fun hearing your commentators moan about the other team, but it wouldn't sound right in a midwestern accent.

100000% on the gambling take over. Every sport is inundated with gambling talk. I don’t get why we are promoting clear adult addictions in a family friendly sport. You can’t swear, but you can peddle gambling odds? I’d argue gambling advertising is even worse than alcohol was. The equivalent would be if during broadcast, the broadcasters started listing off their favourite IPA’s, microbreweries, types of whiskey pairings. That’s not what we turned on the TV for.

I think one thing missing from this list is a great producer and finding different camera angles and replays really helps tell a story of what happened on a play. It also helps tremendously if the color guy can break a replay down and help educate viewers, particularly in non-Canadian markets where there’s a lot more casual viewers and/or people watching who never played the game past mites.

As a Seattle fan I find John Forslund to be high energy on our broadcasts. I am glad that we signed him because the other option would have been signing Kevin Calabro who is more known for his basketball commentary especially with the Sonics when they were in the NBA (Calabro went to the Portland Trail Blazers after not getting the Kraken job). Having Eddie O do the games alongside him is also a treat. Now when it comes to TNT, they are solid (better than ESPN) but their broadcasts are not as entertaining as their NBA telecasts. If the post game show for the NHL on TNT had personalities similar to Charles Barkley & Shaq (they sort of do with Biz) then it would greatly bring in more casual fans to their broadcasts.

Nice video, Shannon, very interesting. I have tried listening to the club's announcers that aren't my favorite teams. I was really surprised that there are some announcers that I have/had to change the channel. The fastest way to get me to change the channel is when I have to listen to the play-by-play announcer attempt to describe every single thing that happens. Example, "player A passes to player B, player C passes to player D, player D takes a very long shot that goes wide." ...... I don't need to hear every single thing described. Those announcers give me a headache.

Several things 1. I still miss Dan Kelly. The best ever and we lost him way too soon. 2. Living the the NYC area, we get all three local teams. Sam Rosen is the all-time best NYR announcer (almost 40 years), and I go back to the days of Norm Jary (!) and Win Elliot. 3. As a Buffalo fan, I never got to hear much of RJ but Dan and Rob are a good team, they do it well without the flamboyance of RJ. 4. As it is with basketball, the TNT studio crew is miles ahead of ESPN. 5. At least I don't have to listen to Jack Edwards!
