Hi Ben, what would you recommend if I want to record share a PPT on Zoom and ensure that Zoom just records that, along with my voice, given that there will be other people present who I do not want to record? For example, I record with Spotligh on, will it also record my screen with PPT or will Spotilight only record my cam? Overall, it's the screen I want it to record, and not mine nor anyone else's cams.

Hi Neil - a couple options: 1) See the video around 4:55. If you minimize the video thumbnails while recording locally, they will not show up in the recording at all. Downside is you can't see anyone when you're presenting. 2) If you have a pro account, there is an option in cloud recording to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files, so you could use that, and you would still be able to see people while sharing.

When cloud recording there is an option to record screen share, speaker, and gallery views all to separate video files, but this option may be disabled by your organization (I can't enable it at Cornell). Hello. I am having a problem with zoom. I would like to record in such a way that both myself and the guest speaker are showing side by side without the black bars on top and bottom. Not the gallery view. I want a kind of full view where the whole screen is taken up by the two parties talking. I do not like the fact that what i am recording are 2 boxes surrounded by a black trim. I would like to do away with the trim and record full on screen. Is that possible ??
@BenFinio
4 жыл бұрын
Hi - I don't think this is possible based on the aspect ratio of the video. If you have two people side by side, then you are putting two widescreen videos next to each other. In order to fit that combined video into the widescreen video format, there HAVE to be black bars on the top and bottom to get the aspect ratio correct. If you could somehow just record the two people's windows, you would wind up with an extra-wide video - which would then get black bars added anyway if you uploaded it somewhere like KZitem. The only way I can think to do this is a third-party video editing program like Adobe Premiere, where you could crop/resize parts of the video to get the aspect ratio you want.
@RonOnThePond

I can confirm everything Ben said in his reply, and I have essentially done what he suggested. I recorded an interview (also used separate sound files for each participant, which Zoom allows) with the black bars you don't like, above and below two smaller 16:9 side by side images. Then I used Vegas Movie Studio for post-production editing. I duplicated the video track with the bars. On one video track I cropped and zoomed to a narrower segment of me, and on the other I did this for the subject I interviewed. I put me on the right, him on the left. Looked great, filling the whole 16:9 video area, just like a Fox News interview. Using the separate audio tracks gave me a way to balance the volume so one of was not louder than the other, and for stereo I could pan each audio track slightly left or right to match the video position.

Thanks! What happens if your student is the one doing the share screen? Does it look the same as if you're sharing the presentation? As in, whatever the student shows also gets recorded? Separately, the "record video during screen sharing" option under Zoom preferences - that's basically just saying to record video whenever anyone shares their screen correct? (vs. after I've already selected "record" it won't record screen shares unless I check that checkbox?) Thanks!
@BenFinio

Hi - yes, if the student is sharing then I believe the student's share should also get recorded. The checkbox you referred to sets whether Zoom continues recording the person's CAMERA during screen sharing - it does not automatically start recording when anyone shares their screen: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362623-Changing-settings-in-the-desktop-client-or-mobile-app#:~:text=Record%20video%20during%20screen%20sharing,by%2Dside%20in%20the%20recording.

There is a new multi-pin and multi-spotlight feature: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s5B_1G13sYWDpYo so you could try spotlighting only the people you want recorded, although I have not tried this. Hi, I have a question I was wondering if you might know the answer to. It's in regards to SCREEN SHARING and recording. In the settings, under recording...there is a box to "record video during screen sharing" with a dropdown box saying "place video to next to the shared screen in the recording". I assist in recording Zoom Legal Depositions. I am successful with these options when an attorney wants to share his screen. My recording ends up being a small video of the person answering questions and the screen next to it of whoever is sharing. However, I have had an instance when I was asked NOT to record the shared screen..(even though they still were screen sharing). I assumed I would simply de-select "record video during screen sharing"...however that did not work. It still recorded the screen being shared. No matter how many combinations I did of checking and un-checking the boxes in this field, I always wind up with a recording that contains the screen share. I'm at this point convinced it's a glitch in Zoom that they haven't realized. But I'm curious if there's just something I'm not doing right.
@BenFinio
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aerial - I'm not sure if it's possible to not record the shared screen when someone shares. The wording for that checkbox is a little confusing, but I think it's referring to video from your webcam. There is an option in CLOUD recording to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files. So in theory you could do that and then delete the shared screen file. That option might be disabled depending on your license or organization though (I cannot enable it at Cornell).

Hi Mark - in cloud recording there is an option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate videos. So in theory you could do that and then only share the speaker view file with people. That option might be disabled depending on your license or organization though (it's disabled at the admin level at Cornell, I can't turn it on). Another option is to use two monitors - I have a video about this and cannot remember off the top of my head what gets recorded but it might do what you want (we just had a baby, I'm more than a little sleep deprived...all these Zoom tutorials are blending together) kzitem.info/news/bejne/rqB7qpaAsHqWeYI

Hi - unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do. The actual resolution of your video in Zoom will generally be lower than the max resolution of your webcam due to bandwidth limitations (on Zoom's end, even if you have good high speed internet yourself). So everyone looks OK in gallery view since the individual camera views are pretty small, but when you blow one up to full screen in speaker view it looks grainy.

Some students don't want to see themselves on the video replays, which have always been gallery view. In the classes, I demonstrate movements and correct the students who attend the live class. Instead of recording these sessions in gallery mode or low-quality speaker view, I'm just going to set up my camcorder to get a clean feed of me during the live classes and use that as the replay. Hi Simon - there is a "hide non-video participants" option (right click on the thumbnail of someone who has their video off), but I believe each participant would have to do that individually - you can't force it on everyone as the host. So (assuming you're the host), you and the co-host would both have to turn off your own video, then tell everyone to go to gallery view, right click one of you, and hide non-video participants. If you want to record all the participants at once while screen sharing, then you need a Pro account with cloud recording, where there is an option to record shared screen, speaker, and gallery views all to separate video files. Each panelist is going to speak for a few moments and then one of the panelists will speak for about an hour. In an ideal world, the chat would not show up in the final recording. The Zoom articles are pretty non-specific when it comes to what final recordings will look like.

Hi Larry - Zoom just released a new "multi-spotlight" feature (a lot of teachers had been asking for this for student group presentations) that lets you spotlight up to 9 people, but I have not had a chance to test it and see how it affects recordings yet. You need to manually update to Zoom version 5.2 to have this enabled, it's not an automatic update. Hopefully you'd be able to spotlight 2 or 3 people then record them in speaker view. If not, I have a workaround in this video - kzitem.info/news/bejne/lq6E1aFtjGWXmag. If you turn off video for all participants but the ones you want to record, then "hide non video participants," then Gallery View will give you a view of just 2 or 3 people, without the thumbnails for everyone else.

Hi Pendra - you could use a third-party video editing program to put a logo or a black box over the image of the speaker in the corner, but there's no way to do that from within Zoom after the recording is done. Hi - 1. This depends on your organization's Zoom settings. I show *local* recording in this video. If you can do cloud recordings, there is an option to "Record active speaker, gallery view and shared screen separately." That will give you separate video files for each. More info on that here: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/203741855-Cloud-recording#h_acaffbd8-27a3-4683-b3a0-b7f853c9e424. I would recommend testing in advance if possible, just to make sure the output is what you want. Hope that helps!

@@BenFinio Ah, that is really helpful, thank you! I may be able to do that as I have my own professional Zoom account. As for the recording size question, I actually found an answer. I would send it to you, but it's of children, so I can't, but what happened is, the recording shows the share screen portion I selected for the kids to read on the left and the children to the right. When, in the recording i said,, "Let me make this as big as I can, it stretched a tiny bit, but the recording went right back to the three kids lined up vertically, while, on my screen, it showed two kids side by side and one kid underneath. Now, the thing to know is that I had enough devices on that day (6) to get a gallery view in the thumbnails, so that must be why the thumbnails of the three kids are stretched from the top of the screen to the bottom, not the small thumbnails you are showing in 5:15. Oh, and FYI, when you have only one person's thumbnail (the others would be non-video participants that you've set not to show) you can also stretch it, but not two people. Weird. When I look up KZitem videos using multiple cameras in zoom, it doesn’t address the recording bit so wondering if you could help. I’m not sure how to get the iPhone to show up as a Switch camera option. It only shows up as a participant, and I have been able to record both cameras in a gallery view where both cameras show in equal size screens but I want the painting to be larger and the palette smaller. I also can’t find the “side by side” setting where you adjust the size by sliding the center line. You said both cameras have to be sharing to do that but I’m not sure how to set up sharing on the iPhone. I did download an app called iVCam by e2e soft but then I also have to connect the PC to that app, and do I use both for Zoom? I sure hope you can help because I am overwhelmed with all the info out there...Thanks for all your zoom tutorials as they are super informative!

Hi Martha - so, unfortunately I'm not a big iPhone/iPad person. By default, if you join a meeting from a totally separate device (like a phone or tablet), as you said it will show up as a separate participant in the meeting, not as a "camera" associated with your main computer. And if you record in gallery view, you should still be able to see both, which it sounds like you've done. However, if you want to see one big and one small, I believe you would need to be screen sharing from the main computer. There is a "content from 2nd camera" option in screen share but I am 99% sure that will only work for USB webcams. There's an iPhone/iPad option in screen share that I haven't tried - have you tried that? support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201379235

I appreciate the helpful tips. One thing I'm wondering about is why the recordings I get are at 25 frames per second? Also, some recordings are 720p and others are 1080p. Any way we can control what resolutions and framerate we get in the recordings?

Hi Alan - I don't know of any settings that let you edit this directly. There's an interesting note at the top of this page about a change with Zoom version 3.5 to a fixed frame rate and resolution instead of variable, but that still doesn't tell you what it is or whether you can set it: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/203650745-Recording-Formats. There is an "optimize for third party video editor" option but details seem scant as to what that actually does: www.filmkraft.tv/post/record-zoom-meetings

@@BenFinio Thanks. Yeah, I've tested the "optimize for video editor" settings, and it seems to be the same either way. I'm starting to wonder if it matters whether I have the Zoom windows full screen or windowed.

Sir if we are muted and speaking something so that also get recorded in the recording & whatever is on our screen that also get recorded like split screen?
@Aruesx

No. When you mute yourself on Zoom it turns off your microphone. So none of your audio from outside the device would be recorded. But zoom only records what is on the zoom app and nothing from other apps like google chrome.

If you join the meeting which is being recorded does it show your picture/visual as you join?
@BenFinio

No, it won't show you until after you click the "join with video" button. When you see the little preview that's to let you test your camera, no one else can see you yet.

Hello, I do a video podcasty series where I interview people one on one with me on one side of the screen and the interviewee on the other. Is it possible to have a third person viewing the interview but now in the actual recording? Thanks!

If that person turns off their video then they won't be in the recording, you can also spotlight yourself and the other participant and I think that will prevent them from showing up. I have a few other videos on my channel about Zoom recording that you could check out (it has been a while since I did this).

So when you record in Gallery View the video play back will show you, all other participants, and your screen screen share (whether it's your entire monitor or just your selected screen) correct? Thank you for your help!

I just did a practice run with two accounts and when I record in gallery mode it's still only just me being recorded in the top right when I screen share, but I would like the other participants to also show on the recording. What settings were you on to have everyone show up in the top right in your recording? Thank you!
@BenFinio

@@pkostaras I made this video a while ago, but if I remember correctly this may be a difference between local and cloud recording. This was a local recording and as you can see, say at 4:18 in the video, all three thumbnails show up in the upper right, and all three also show up in the recording. If you're doing cloud recording I would read through this page and check your settings: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360025561091-Recording-layouts#h_2e32d41b-5347-48f6-bfef-e20a5e3d2459, or try a local recording. If you're already doing local recording then I'm not sure what would cause that, assuming you did have everyone showing in the thumbnails (and not just you) during the actual meeting.

Thank you! I was playing with it yesterday and the cloud recording doesn’t show all thumbnails on gallery view with a shared screen. I’ll have to see what the local recording looks like. The strange thing is the local recording button doesn’t give you different options to record. They’re all under the cloud recording options. It’s incredibly frustrating.

thank you for this video, I have a question about Recoring and what is shown.....If I am the Host...But wanting someone else to be spotlighted...then I press spotlight and they are recorded in Full Screen. HOWEVER...when I press gallery view, THAT person is still recorded. Is there a way to record a main person who is not host (with small thumbnails of of others above) AND at the end, have the entire group as gallery recorded... with me being the host?
@BenFinio

Hi Rita - if you go into your settings (in a web browser) and go to cloud recording settings, there is an option to record speaker/gallery/shared screen views all in different files. However, for me this is locked by my institution and I can't turn it on. Otherwise I'm not sure how you could go back to recording gallery view without un-spotlighting the other person first. If the meeting isn't that big and everyone knows how to use Zoom, you could also just ask the participants to "pin" the person on their own screens, instead of using the Spotlight feature as the host, and I don't think that should affect your recording.

I have not tested this since I don't have enough computers, but I believe there is an upper limit (maybe 4 thumbnails). You might be able to find this on Zoom's official support pages.

Hi Dr (of Philosophy) Finio! Thank you--very useful. I believe that the chat is only saved if recording to the cloud. I'm curious if recording to cloud is any different than recording to the local computer for everything else you demonstrated. And what are the pros and cons of recording to cloud vs locally. Again, really helpful. And thank you to your daughter for sharing Magic and her other friends!

Hi - one of the major differences is that in cloud recording there is an option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files. So if you wanted to do any editing/splicing the different views together, it would give you that option. They have a big FAQ about local and cloud recording here that might be worth reading: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360040771752-Frequently-asked-questions-about-local-and-cloud-recording. Aside from differences there, I think the other major difference is convenience. If you EVENTUALLY need your recording online for students to access, then if you record locally first, you have to upload it manually somewhere later. Whereas depending on your situation, cloud recordings might be immediately available to students (e.g. at Cornell, Zoom is linked to our learning management system, Canvas, so the cloud recordings show up there automatically). Some people have expressed concerns that if you have slow or unreliable home internet, it could affect the cloud recording and you're better off recording locally, but I have not experimented with this.

Can I record in zoom only my video in order to read from my screen share?

Hi, thanks so much for this, it was very informative. Is there some add on or third-party-app that will SHOW ME in a separate window exactly what is being recorded WHILE I'm recording, like what we see in your video? I have had trouble with recordings not coming out as I thought they would, and I don't know it until the meeting is over and it's too late. Example: I am directing dialogue scenes between two student actors... I get the two on screen in gallery view, I turn off my own video, I "hide non video participants" and record the students reading the scenes... After the meeting when I go to play the videos, I find one of them is MY OWN FACE WATCHING (Aggh!), one of them is a black screen with audio only, and one is actually what I intended (the two students on screen with audio and video)... Yet I didn't think I had done anything differently between the three! I hope you can help. Thanks again!

Hi Jeff - I'm not aware of any third-party applications that will do this. The best advice I have is to do a very short test of your specific recording needs to make sure you have all the settings right. That way you don't waste an entire class and find out it came out wrong. If you have multiple computers, you can log in to the meeting multiple times as yourself to simulate students attending (that's how I make these videos).

Thanks Ben, what we needed for our recorded online meeting was to have the Host record all the presenters and when shared also the Powerpoint presentation. Every time we played back the recorded session all Participants were not shown. By hit and miss we went to settings and changed the selections for Share Screen to enter full screen, scale to fit, and side by side. Then on Recording we selected Record video during screen sharing. We were able to record and play back all presenters and the current speaker and the power point. Does this make sense?

Hi George - I have not tried adjusting all of those settings. I do know there is a cloud recording option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files, if that would be useful, but it may be disabled by your organization (I can't turn it on at Cornell).
