I've done roofing repairs on everything from single family homes up to multi-million dollar churches, they all use OSB for the roof sheathing. The only place I've ever seen plywood is on the edges with an exposed eave, where humidity will cause the strands to flake off of OSB. The only time the sheathing ever gets damaged is when the underlayment either gets damaged or doesn't get sealed properly at penetrations and valleys and such.

a lot of customers buy on price, not value. good labor is expensive and hard to keep. a lot of small to medium companies use subs who get paid by the square because otherwise with in-house hourly wage employees, which require expensive workers comp insurance, the roof estimate would be too expensive and theyd have a much harder time getting jobs and turning a profit. add all that up and what you get is rushed jobs everywhere. these guys dont want to come back the next day if they dont have to because with 6 guys, the sub or foremans profit evaporates.

The roofers that just replaced my corrugated tin roof (yes I'm an Aussie) had to work quickly before the weather changed. The last day they were working as the snow was falling and the mean freezing wind from the snowfields was hitting. I think the snowfields got more than a foot of snow that day so wind chill was really bad. Sidenote: Four days after we had a massive hail storm with more than 6 inches falling in 10 minutes. It was bloody cold. To finish the roof and put my wood fire chimney back on the roof the guy had to wrap his hands up in a spare jumper and gloves. His hands went purple and numb from the cold. The worst part was putting on the silicone/ liquid stuff to seal it completely. He had to use his fingertips to push the sticky gel around and under parts of it. Blessings, Dot

Agreed, especially if you’re by the hour. Companies who pay hourly don’t give a rats ass about your well being. Well at least majority of them. I’ll never understand people who say people have a weak mentality if they slack off during an hourly job. Where’s the motivation? Initiative to do more? Don’t think so. Getting paid by production however is a different story. There’s so much drive to do more because you get more pay out of it. This is why I tell my helpers to take as many breaks as they need during the day because the boss man isn’t going to be paying us anymore to work harder than we already are.

@robertpage2023

@@gusmarokity6482 Using common sense as I assume any roofer would, NO. Even the decking should be cut so as NOT to come in contact with the pipe. The "Bestos" three wall hot venting pipe is actually pretty cool even with the furnace or hot water heater/boiler flaming. "Holes" in a roof can only go bad if something was not installed correctly so why not put in a back-up protection? Actually I prefer the sticky think underlayment as it seals nails and is one more protective barrier. It will also last thru a couple of re-roofs.
