When your finger tips do get calloused, pulling a hot plate of food out of the microwave and placing it on your finger tips to carry over to the table is a guitarists mutant X-men power. Yeah, it may not be the best mutant power but it comes in handy saving food from being dropped on the floor. Especially, when you're really hungry and your watching something on the Tele. I play accoustic bass guitar in an amateur bluegrass band, but I've played standard guitars much longer (70 years). Started on standup bass 5/8ths size. When I got a chance I played our banjo player Martin D35. Shunned buying a Martin as a result. But in the last year I've bought several Martins trading up. When my pal bought his D35 it was a 68 model he bought in 69. $550.00. Now D35 prices have skyrocketed. Next on my radar is an upgrade to a Martin accoustic bass guitar.

Strangely, the first dreadnought acoustics didn’t bear the Martin logo, but were made for the Oliver Ditson Company with production beginning in 1916, marketing being centred upon New York and Boston. These models had 12-fret-to-the-body necks, slotted pegheads, no pickguards and with unique inlays and soundhole rosettes. However, in terms of construction, they featured mahogany backs and sides and spruce tops; since becoming pretty much standard with makers of dreadnought-style guitars worldwide.

I don't like big dreadnought bodies. The old parlor guitars are the best size imo. Nice and small. Usually I'd be playing plugged in anyway so the volume bonus you get from the bigger bodies is nullified. I own a vintage parlor guitar from 1909, which the previous owner electrified. Great tone!

Actually - 1916 - dreadnought style was originally developed in 1916 and was manufactured by Martin specifically for retailer the Oliver Ditson Company. The model was retired after dismal sales. In 1931, after revising the design, Martin began producing dreadnought guitars under its own brand, the first two models being the D-1 and D-2, with bodies made of mahogany and rosewood respectively. www.esomogyi.com/ssg1.html

1850's USA - = The steel-string guitar developed within a few decades of the Spanish guitar. However, it did not come out of any of the guitar-making centers of Europe. Instead, it developed in the United States. And it did so in response to the growing musical needs of a rapidly expanding population that wanted entertainment. And this coincided, once again, with technological advances that made it possible to produce plentiful, cheap wire. This occurred hand-in-hand with the astonishingly fast conquest and subdivision of the American landmass by hordes of settlers who needed inexpensive wire fencing to mark land boundaries and keep cattle from wandering onto neighbors’ lands. As wire for fences was produced in massive quantities, so could wire strings be made for guitars. A Brief History of the Steel-String Guitar by steelstring guitar maker Antony Dixon The steel-string guitar story begins in 1796 with the birth in Mark Neukirchen, Germany, of Christian Fredrich Martin. Fifteen years later he was apprenticed to Johann Stauffer, a Viennese maker of guitars and other instruments. He worked there for fourteen years, returning to Mark Neukirchen in 1825 - only to find himself in the middle of a long and bitter dispute between the Violinmakers' Guild and the unregulated cabinetmakers, over who should have the right to make guitars. The final ruling, when it came in 1832, was in favour of the cabinetmakers. Martin, however, had his sights set on greener pastures, and the following year, he left with his young family for America. Arriving in New York, Martin opened a music shop, selling everything from violin strings to instruments, including guitars which he made in a back room. But life in New York was a struggle, and in 1839 Martin sold his shop and bought some land at Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where there was a substantial community of German immigrants. Here, Martin concentrated on making guitars, gradually abandoning the Stauffer characteristics of his instruments as he responded to the demands of the rapidly-developing American market. www.guitar-maker.com/pages/histssg.html Those early metal-strung guitars were made simply, cheaply, and in large quantities in the factories and production shops of the day. The guitar’s appeal was that one could learn to play it more easily than a violin or piano. It made chordal harmonies that were pleasant to listen to, and it could be used to accompany singing, which made it a social instrument. Moreover, metal strings would last a long time compared to gut ones, and they were much cheaper. With the advent of metal strings, the guitar became an accessible, affordable, popular, and successful folk instrument.

Evolution of early guitars designed and built before the German Herr Martin made his iconic steel strung American Made instruments in from 1839 to 1850s and onwards.... details the invention and evolution of the 6-string modern guitar from 1750-1800. "Additional research of the guitar's history from the 1750's to 1800's examines how the five-course guitar gradually gave way to the six-string instrument, a fascinating process that occurred in different ways and times in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Britain. - LACG." www.earlyromanticguitar.com/erg/evolution.htm

I have small hands (6.5in from wrist to the tip of the longest finger, and 7.5in from tip of the thumb to a fully spread out hand's tip of the pinky) so to reach the half the strings I have to bend my wrist which is giving me carpal tunnel.
