How peculiar. I watch the Big Bear eagle pair too. Shadow and Jackie. They have been the picture of reliability and nurturing for years. Suddenly this year they have both been absent from the nest and their two eggs for hours at a time. I saw it happen four times. Jackie will come and go in the middle of the night sometimes, leaving the eggs unattended. Their eggs are due to hatch any day now and last week they mated. A raven visited the nest while the parents were gone once and it looked around and then simply flew away - leaving the eggs untouched. Everyone says how highly unusual this all is. I wondered if the eagles were sensing a natural disaster about to happen so they flew away. I don't know how close the Redding eagles are to the Big Bear nest, only that they are both in California. It's snowing in Big Bear, so it's cold. Now you describe much the same behaviors at Redding. This is all so confusing.

This was my very first thought as well! What occurred over the past few days with Jackie and Shadow has been so confounding! Someone said there have been tremors recently... below 2 on the richter scale, but strong enough for animals to sense. Could this be why they became so agitated and off-kilter?

Then there is poor sweet M15 with two babies and his partner Harriet has not returned in two weeks. But there is a intruder who seems interested in him I call her Jolene very beautiful Eagle. First of all, I hope you get well soon. This is the first eagle nest I ever watched. That was the 2021 season and began with the second egg hatching. We used to go through Redding when visiting family in California. So, there was a little familiarity for me. Since 2021 I have watched two other Eagle nests: Big Bear and Fort St Vrain ( near me in Colorado). This season I started watching NEFL and SWFL. There has been a lot of drama with mates (mom)disappearing, no eggs, intruders, possible courting, people upsetting the eagles, etc. Now, we have eagles in the two California nests leaving the eggs alone for hours! From what I have read, both pairs have been Super parents over many years. We are so fortunate to have the ability to watch these nests and see what their lives are like. The hurricane in Florida has displaced many eagles and possibly the earthquakes, although not unusual, in California May have some effect? Thank you Gary for taking so much time to put your videos together for us. You sound tired and sad. Blessings!

Thank you Gary. I was really busy at work yesterday, so was only able to check in briefly a couple of times, and was surprised to see the nest unattended, but had no idea how long. Jackie at BBV has also been exhibiting unusual nesting behavior this season as well. I am not saying they are related but it is unusual. There has been some speculation at BBV about seismic activity, but who knows. Regardless… from an observation viewpoint we may be able to gain some knowledge/ information about egg viability from seeing what happens with the two nests this season. That may sound cold… but when you have lemons- make lemonade. All we can do is hope, keep good thoughts and wait. I hope you feel better soon. Any idea when the Friends site chat will open this season?

I believe the visiting juveniles/subadult eagles are causing the disruption. I also believe they will be off defending the territory as a priority over incubating eggs. I believe this to be the case at Big Bear too. Very unusual. We shall wait and hope for good outcomes.

Thank you Gary. Like everyone else, I hope you will be well soon! This eagle season has been so stressful!😭 In addition to the beloved Redding nest, I follow the Florida nests closely. this is pretty normal behaviorI have seen them lay one egg and do nothing but sit an hour or so and then off several hours. Temperature determines the sex of the eaglet, females need less time incubating, and thus most first hatchings are female. Only when there are at least 2 eggs do the adults begin staying on the nest longer. Best of luck on the hatch.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and care-filled narration, Gary 🙏💗 It certainly is perplexing! You know, it occurred to me that if Shadow wasn't yet aware that there was an egg, that might explain why he let so much time go by before going to incubate? He sure seemed extra happy to meet his precious new eggie... he couldn't seem to get enough of rolling it around and reveling in it before snuggling down onto it and tenderly pulling fluff all around himself ❤ I hope you are feeling much better soon! 🤗

Appears this is developing into an interesting season of oddities to "humans", but sure all these oddities fits well into the parts we don't understand quite so easily. That's partly the reason for studying them to better understand them in the wild, as well as being entertained. See near similar has played out again today 2/16. I don't know about any egg on your face, but the name's real and I had it before any movies or novels were filmed or written and I am the 4th and final generation in my lineage going back before the Civil War. And I do have fun with it (name), good ice breaker very often. So no offense as to others having some entertainment with it too, and, as to a question forming... no ,I have not seen them all (movies) seen a few, don't have clearly the gadgets, cars etc., wouldn't mind a few of the perks. But I am the guy you see and don't see...but when I am there, (in my own life) I am just the man behind the curtains or the one giving the important ones (metaphor) a shoulder so to speak to stand on...in there moment. My delights in life are what I am suited best for, and enjoying things because they are artful in their own right in a myriad of various genres. Liberty and Guardian are in such a category as have been those who made it possible for me to enjoy these last three nesting seasons. Thanks for giving me a moment of pause to reflect here, was enjoyable to visit. And I would have said Liberty will lay egg #2 sometime Saturday, but the pair have me, like many I suspect, just guessing, ... like novices often do, I'll leave that to the Eagle people, but something is clearly different (to me) this season.
