For every part where this movie is clumsy and heavy-handed, it is also prescient and still relevant. D Wight Girl storyline feels tonally off because Singleton was writing outside of his comfort zone but her college experiences of sexual assault and questioning her sexuality were not themes commonly explored in film at the time. I think Singleton went too big and too outside his own experiences for his own good here but regardless he was clearly interested in making films that make people stop and think and that's important even when it doesn't quite land.

Sure but commpare him to Spike Lee. Sigleton went out of his way to research and show a different experience from a different perspectiive he knew nothing about at first. Even if clumsily. Shit, he even humanised rhat nazj and in general all terrorists by showing how theyre mostly vulnerable people rejected by community and fished by these hate groups using and manipulating them for the sense of belonging. Imagine Spike Lee's dumbass doing that lol nope
