I don't think its a case of "nobody cares", its a case of "we enjoy your content no matter what". Your variety is what makes you interesting. This. So most people are just going to enjoy the content for whatever it is. We're not going to say anything unless it starts to suck. The people complaining are usually looking for a specific type of content and when you go off script they get upset.

It continually surprises me that you do not have over 1,000,000 subs at this pont. Your videos are always well edited, not overly technical and straight to the point. I put you on par with diesel creek and south main. I think your recent foray into skits were freaking cinimatic gold. The variety of work always keeps me coming back. I do not understand KZitem or their algorithms. I will follow you into whatever realm the channel moves to. I have many of the same interests as you.

To me, the magic of WWW is Wes. You're the reason I watch every video you post. I don't care whether it's a build video, will it run, repair, diagnostics, or whatever, as long as it features Wes' brilliant mind solving a problem and injecting your unique humor. That's the recipe. I've described your channel to friends as the Dr. House of vehicle diagnostics. My advice, for what it's worth, don't lose what makes Wes who he is. I also really enjoying the occasional cameo by your family. I don't know Wes, and will probably never meet him, but he seems like someone I would want as a friend, and that's why I watch.

I'm a mechanic from Germany and I watch every video you put up. Because of the 4 mentioned points. And because you are a hard working, funny und educated person. I like the 'not edited out' mistakes, because they happen to me as well. Hard for me to make suggestions, other then: don't stop making the videos you did. And yes, there is no huge demand for your genre. There are much less people that like watching 'down to earth' (technical) content without clickbait, then the sensationel scripted reality media stuff, the majority is powerful clicking on and KZitem ist built for. But there is no german channel in your genre, that can keep up with your videos, educational-,humor-,contentwise. So I stick with your, Matt's, John's, Andrew's, ... videos. Stay healthy!

I think you might be overlooking a thing or two. The one that comes readily to mind is your presentation. You have a hell of a droll sense of humor. Combine that with your ability to laugh at yourself and the skill that you bring to each task then the content doesn't matter as much because you bring it alive. Hell, Wes, I'm more than a bit older than you and you always teach me something. And I finish the video feeling better. For my 2 cents you're doing just fine. And I thank you.

"You're fine, Wes. There's nothing wrong with your brain." Your channels are authentic and unscripted, not misleading clickbait. I noticed your music, but I wasn't interested in the music itself. I was more interested in what you were saying and showing. I have a brain similar to yours, and I believe that with all of us watching your content, we can beat the KZitem algorithm. You just need to guide and motivate us in the right direction so we can overcome that challenging algorithm. If you need more comments, please let us know. If they need to be longer, they will be. We can defeat the beast, and as a result, we will gain more benefits. More income for you equals more fun and educational content for us. Just stay well and continue being yourself. Just speaking for myself, a guy who did a lot of wrenching many years ago, I watch your videos because of your wry sense of humor, your amazing ability to diagnose, think things through, diagram out, explain your logic, fabricate parts, and your humble ability to discuss your mistakes. It’s literally “watching you work”. My personal favorites are where you receive a really messed up “piece of hot garbage” to borrow a phrase from Mortske, and you diagnose it, fix it and get it operating again. That could be anything from an old welder to a snow mobile to a vehicle. Adding the extra touches such as music etc. are nice but not why I watch. Please keep up the good work, hope you and family had a very nice Christmas and best wishes for a very good new year.

Wes, the reason I watch you is that you have such an amazingly broad set of skills at your disposal. You are an engineer that does mechanic work and a bunch of other stuff. I don't know of anyone on KZitem with your breadth of skills. Fabrication, electronics, CNC, nothing seems to intimidate you. That is really cool and that's what makes you unique in my book. I always enjoy seeing your family......it keeps us in a reality context. Your struggles with projects and how to use your time are the same that plague us all and it's always interesting to see how you navigate all that. My sense is you would feel better about yourself if you cull the waiting projects about 50% just in self defense....get some of these off your list.....as in, trash some stuff or get the wife to help market the scrap. You will be successful any way you take your channel because you are an interesting, intelligent guy with a refreshing perspective. Keep up the great work.

I was thinking the same after watching all of the projects sitting outside. If you know people who want some of them, let them change owners. In total, they look like a problem of an unrealistic perception of time availability. The interior projects could be a similar situation if taken in whole, but I see that if some were to be completed, they could actually help productivity. Do you have someone available who could take on small assignments? A high school mechanics student? A nephew?

Don’t stray too far from the format you have now. It works. We click to watch as soon as content is uploaded. You’ve built a fan base without ever resorting to like and subscribe being thrown around. That’s a faith in your audience that we respect and admire. I like your interaction with the audience and the dog. You’ve got the measure of both of us in terms of what we are thinking and what we’ll react to. Humour, interest, nationality differences and the level of experience that we have. I’ll never work on a sketchy logging robot but I’ve got some skills in electronics and mechanics that I can use to follow where you’re going with it. That makes it interesting for me but it’s pitched at a level that someone non technical can grasp too. You sir, are a freaking treasure. I am a recent subscriber and have only been for around 18 months. I was referred here by our favorite Canadian swearing coach, Peg, of all people. In that 18 months, I have binged most all of your content, although there are a few outliers I’m sure. I have been a heavy duty diesel tech for 25 years (am45 now) and I have learned so much from you. You have helped me become a more proficient troubleshooter by slowing down and looking at things analytically. For that, I thank you. I dig all of your content truthfully. I can live through you vicariously like with the robot log mover. I would never have the gravitas to dive in headfirst outside my comfort zone like you do. Bravo sir. As far as the channel, again, all your content kicks ass. I don’t need polished, but I do notice the effort. Your humor is great. Personally, I enjoy 30+ minute videos I can watch to wind down when the wife and kids retire to bed, as that’s my time. I can’t understand how you don’t have far more than a million subscribers. I guess you’re one of the Tube’s best kept secrets. Keep doing you and I’ll keep watching. Thank you sir. Happy New Year from Montana!

Hey Wes, as a new subscriber and fellow perpetual Illinoisan, I gotta say you are doing an amazing job running your channel. You mentioned wanting to follow a narrative in your videos' style and how that factors into your "not wasting people's time" methodology and I think you're doing great at that already. What I've come to notice about most successful KZitem channels is that the success seems to be heavily reliant on the channel's personality which you have a ton of. To me, your channel is already a huge success, which I'm sure other people reading would agree with. I don't think you should do anything other than what you are currently doing - trying to have fun while getting stuff done/tinkering and putting your own spin on how that happens. I've been so happy to catch your channel this year and hope you will continue to make videos about literally anything. Again, you've got the personality, the humility, the know-how. That's all you need to cultivate a great audience. Keep up the good work and hope to run into you some day.

The variety is what makes your channel special. As for the need for "clean editing", the problem is that it ends up looking slick. Professionally produced which is what everyone is fleeing from. I 100% agree with liking the variety. It seems like the return from the hours you probably spend editing and polishing is not worth it....for me, I'd rather have another video instead. And while I love the new stuff and new gadgets, I kinda miss some of the repair videos. So for my $0.02 (which is probably not worth $0.02), keep doing what you're doing, but throw in some repair/diagnostics videos with the time you free up by agonizing less over the editing. And 30 minute length works for me...can always have a "part 2" etc. if too much content. Happy 2024(!).

I would also enjoy seeing the demo and construction of the new office. Maybe you can get your Mrs. to help you with some organization. Happy New Year!

Wes, I'm sure hundreds of people have said the same thing already but I just wanted to put in my two cents as a long time subscriber.. Each KZitemr has their own 'niche' characteristic that makes them enjoyable to watch, Squatch has his absolute perfection, Mortske, his ability to remember interesting vintage car trivia, Diesel Creek obviously the large machinery, Pine Hollow, very detailed and advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting. My point being, trust your gut and just do what you do. The longer videos is a great idea since we love watching what you do, tid bits of the family and other projects add to the variety of your abilities, and your real fans know that and appreciate that. Once you get all of your ducks in a row like organizing the shop and finishing the lingering projects you have laying around, it'll clear out some space in the shop and in your mind for the possibilities ahead. So if you are looking for some advice finish those projects and get rid of the ones that don't have a future and you know it, the sooner the better. Then hone into what made your channel great in the first place, your ability to fix anything that is thrown at you. (Without breaking the bank of course) Thank you for the years of content and keep it up, much love to the family and I hope you have a wonderful new year! -Brendon

Agree with him too - I've been here since the location X times, the first one might have been the dragline crane, but I don't watch the videos from your "youtube friends". It is mostly the person, not really the genre. I'm subscribed to other persons who have approx as many subscribers as you - they are great in their fields, make great content, but maybe this is the "extent of the territory" if you don't follow the algorythm, i.e post more often, longer videos and ask everybody to subscribe and so on. The logging robot is not really for me, but still would watch it. I would much rather enjoy seeing you paint. :) I paint bikes and smaller repairson cars, but only in the summertime as my shed is not insulated and it is always something I dread and usually do twice to be acceptable. :D

I began watching your channel with the Military Truck Crazy Suspension Damage post. I instantly loved it. I loved the diagnosis and have loved watching you diagnose many other vehicles. I'm sure that is my favorite thing about your channel as far as content is concerned. What I love most is your demeanor, sharing your thoughts, and the calmness of your voice, even in the face of many challenges that help create solutions in your mind. I love watching your work on vehicles, and it shows me so many ways to fix them when many seem fruitless and even pointless. I would love to see more work on various vehicles that are a challenge to many. I love how you have technological skills that enhance your ability to diagnose issues. A long time ago, I was a mechanic and not a very good one. However, doing that job allowed me to see some people who were good at diagnosis and repairs, and it was inspiring to me whether I was raised to their level or not. I love your channel and would love to see more videos. I see no need to have them be long. I generally prefer videos under 30 minutes. I enjoy your stories, insights, and thinking process regarding the various machines you surround yourself with. I've learned much from Watching We Work and am eager to see much more in whatever direction suits you best. Thank you for all you and your family have done sharing your videos with me. You're fine Wes, there's nothing wrong with your brain. You're a very intelligent and technically minded man and I appreciate that you take the time to share your knowledge. I watch your channels because they're genuine and unscripted, not fake click bait crap like other channels out there. We share a lot of common interests and skills too. I've been into automotive and mechanical stuff since I was a kid. I worked in auto recycling and salvage for 20yrs, I was a production machinist for 10yrs, and now I travel around the country and fix steel mills for a living. It's nice to be entertained by someone I can relate to who has the same skill sets that I do. Will it run videos are like belly buttons, everyone seems to be making them. There's nothing wrong with them but they get kind of samey after a while. The technical videos you make are a long term investment. I've had problems with certain things in the past and have found videos that are a few years old that helped me solve the problems. Build videos are also a long term investment, like the bucket you made for your skid steer. I guarantee someone who buys a Thomas skid steer with a worn out bucket is wondering how/if they can fix it economically. You're doing a fine job, and don't let anyone tell you anything different. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year to you and your family Wes. 👍

Speaking as a mechanical engineer, which I am sure that you will appreciate :-) What I appreciate in your work is the scope of your projects, and the analytical method that you use (along with considerable skills) to solve the problems presented. I am always entertained and am always learning. You also have a wry wit that keeps it somewhat light and entertaining. From the KZitem perspective, IMO your audience is static with your current content at the current pace that you are creating it. You have all the subscribers who will watch every video that you put out, regardless of when it comes out that you are going to get. Those attracted to your content are more comparable to the audience of Mustie1 than Mortske. Like Mustie1, you never know what the next project is going to be. You have to THINK (and want to think) to enjoy the videos. One never knows what the next project is going to be. That is a great channel model IMO. I think if you could up your pace to one video a week, released at the same time every week, that would do a TON to improve recommended views and grow your subscriber base. People will look forward and tune into the show once a week (just like we used to watch TV back in the day.) But every other week, uneven schedule etc...your current subs are going to tune in, but it isn't the best pace for pulling in new viewers. I know that one video a week is a tough pace as you have mentioned in the past. But imagine how happy you would make your fans!

Two things, possibly already mentioned, but in my words: 1) Don’t worry about being more chatty and longwinded occasionally; channels like yours thrive, in part, because we like hanging out with you! Even for those of us that are technical (and/or living with Asperger’s) the personal connection matters! 2) Whether or not someone is consciously aware of or can identify “good editing” or “high production values,” the simple fact is that all people everywhere are drawn to excellence-it’s as natural as gravity… that said, we’re not here to watch feature films, and excellence can manifest in lots of different ways. In general, I just want to say, “Keep up the great work and don’t forget to run after the projects/ideas that make YOU excited, Wes!”

Two things: One. Concerning building a story. Some channels excel at this, but they end up feeling scripted. Two. I love the hit or miss with repair and diagnostic videos. I always learn something and they feel genuine. Sometimes it's a complicated problem, and sometimes it isn't. Real life works that way, and your videos reflect that. Final note: Those of us who work with our hands enjoy watching someone else work. It's cathartic when you see someone you respect run into roadblocks, because we all run into roadblocks. I think I may have posted a similar comment in the past. This is by far my favorite channel. I am sometimes amazed by the amount of care and attention that you take to explain things by, for example, making a hand-written schematic diagram or explaining things in simple terms, ( this comment coming from a retired teacher of 32 years). If I decide to do my own mechanical stuff to my vehicles, I often consult your channel to see if you have a video that demonstrates what I am about to do. First of all, you are my #1 choice for KZitem videos from all my subscriptions. Your sense of humor, obvious intelligence and rural spin on things keeps me coming back. Your editing is spot on for your audience. Plus, I live in a climate like yours and I appreciate the fact that sometimes nuts get rusted and bolts break off. Now, having said that, I'm going to "name names" for a little bit here. I also watch Rainman Ray, and his editing drives me bananas. I really don't need to watch him remove every single lug nut or every single bolt on a valve cover. Drives me nuts (no pun intended). I've never felt myself getting frustrated by your editing. And, as far as the type of videos, I like your variety. There are channels out there that specialize in rebuild/restoration like Vice Grip Garage. But, I actually think the name of your channel says it all. I like to Watch Wes Work. I like your insight, diagnostic thought, and your comments while you're working. I very much gain from watching you and other seasoned mechanics do what I attempt; analyze a mechanical situation, diagnose and repair/restore. It's definitely streamlined my own work having a notion of 'how would Wes approach this". I don't see where you need to change anything except stop fretting over it. I joined the train in 2020 right after covid hit and love all your content. As someone in construction in that type of "brown-collar" position, I appreciate the hands-on practicality and the engineering type explanation of your videos. I know building, not mechanical things, but I can always find something interesting and educational in your videos. Especially at this point, I trust your judgement on video topics. I consume KZitem as my version of cable, so I live out of my subscription box. I see a new vid from you come out, and I click to watch it. I'm not really worried about what it might be about, because no matter what I know I will enjoy it. Please don't think that your extra effort in editing has gone unnoticed. I love the skits and the music and the extra bit of polish, because I can appreciate that extra level of work you have put into it to upgrade my experience as the viewer. I respect the hell out of that. If you do decide to scale it back because the consensus of your feedback dictates that, I understand and will still watch and enjoy your videos all the same. If you put out a quick little video of something you thought was interesting or a 4 hour mega movie montage, I will still watch and enjoy every moment of it. Knowledge and exposure is fascinating in my opinion, so whether it be sewing or putting together a resin printer or reframing your corner office or setting up your new lifts or fixing the backhoe (etc), I don't care: I'm in. Lets do it. The result remains the same: I'm gonna watch it, I'm gonna like it, and I'm gonna share it with my friends.

" BOOM, BAM, POW" ie: WILL it RUN 8000 miles with NO OIL. Some of these build channels completely shut off comment, like Fireball Tool. And I don't know why that is. But every build channel does one thing. Time lapse. Sometimes with voice overs. Sometimes no voice over. Build videos are great. And I love your style. But I think why casual viewers like them is because they see the before/after happen right in front of them. Longer videos are the best. People love watching wes work. So don't limit them to just 10 mins of your craft. Sometimes people enjoy the mundane in-between the actual progress. They enjoy the struggle. Watching you work also involves a little dead space of no work. Your channel allows us to be a fly on the wall in your shop. Like the old man sitting in the chair during Essential Craftsman videos. Keep up the great work. Love your stuff. Your videos are extremely educational and balance being technical without outcasting those with limited knowledge.

Wes, you possess a rare variety of excellent characteristics. Extremely: hard working, talented, intelligent, humorous (with sarcasm!), detail oriented, retentive, methodical and simply gifted! My best advice to you is JUST BE YOURSELF - that is why you have so many followers! Your old videos might be getting more hits due to new subscribers who are working backwards to see your work from the past. Edit the videos to YOUR liking - sometimes unpolished and uncut vids show a more human side to how things REALLY ARE! We all make errors and goofs and it helps us feel more connected instead of watching some sterile, seemingly perfect guy working in a pristine, ER room type environment. Who the hell works like that?? LOVE your channel and content, and again, do what makes you happy!

I have mostly stayed dedicated to your channel since my algorithm found it a few months ago. I’ve grown tired of all the KZitem garbage where someone digs crap out of a forest, gets it running, but doesn’t fix it. I like how you stick with projects and actually fix things. Especially enjoy the multi-part projects like the back-hoe or skid steer. I really hope you don’t become a will-it-run channel!

Wes, I am ALWAYS excited to see a new video from you, no matter what the length is, or what the content is about! I think that what intrigues me to watch is that I love your personality, and, in spite of what you say about not being ‘normal’, the way you work through the problems or project at hand is super interesting to me. Your skill set is superb, whether it’s repairing a very difficult engine problem, or a out of whack machine that you purchased for a song. And you always mix the right amount of family and pet interaction in there, which adds to the balance. So, as a retired mechanical engineer, I’m grateful for any content you post on this or any channel! Happy new year to you, the Pup, and your beautiful family! LarryS

Pipe welder here and I’ve watched your videos for years for you and your way of story telling. I watch every one you put up. You’re doing great. The vast majority of us aren’t looking for an artsy video we just want to see you crack the puzzle of whatever you’ve got going this week. I’ll be here for every one.

I have watched everyone of your videos. I eagerly wait for your next one to come out. I cant tell you how much I enjoy watching. But more important than anything and above all else ( and what you may be discounting ) is that I ( and everyone else ) enjoy you as a person. I admire you so much. Quit worrying about it and putting yourself down. You are exceptionally brilliant. With that said, I dont care how you present your videos or edit in refinements. I will continue to be here to watch each and every one of them. Some of your older videos are possibly doing better because new subscribers are going back to watch them. I only wish you were 1200 miles closer to me.

I'd have to say you're doing something right. I discovered you last month and I think I've watched 30-40+ videos in your catalogue over the past 3 years this past 2 weeks. You make diagnostics and repair jobs super interesting and humorous. Keep it up!

I personally like the 20-to-45-minute videos. An hour, hour and a half to two hours with minutiae, I tend to zone out. I think your editing is spot on. Everything we need to see and hear, nothing we don't, and you always find a way to give Max his moment in the sun. I like the fabricating/ machining productions as much as the troubleshooting right down to the crusty plow truck content. One quality you put forth that I don't think you're aware of is that you can explain what you're doing in a non-condescending manner. I come for the technical content and stay for the sarcasm. I wouldn't change anything.

You have so many comments I don't know if you will ever read this, but I like the bounce around content. I almost always learn something watching you. I subscribe to 8 you tube channels and yours is generally the only one I do not skip ahead several times in 30 minutes. I am a retired machine shop teacher, welder, and farmer, I still enjoy making a tractor bucket for a neighbor or re working a trailer or rebuilding a hydraulic system. Your ability to solve electrical problems has me in awe. I think if I were you I would probably be satisfied with 300K dedicated viewers, not worry too much about expanding and just relax. Post when you feel like it. Don't Quit. Ellis

Wes, I like everything about you and your channel. Your humorous and candid demeanor serves you and me, your viewer, well. Examples of this are your enjoyment of test rides of repairs and inclusion of your dog, all very natural and human touches that let me see “a day in the life of” Wes on a relatable basis. I do enjoy seeing your rework or better said, resurrection of old, worn out and abandoned equipment. Hope you get as much enjoyment and satisfaction out of making these episodes as I do watching them.

Just one person's opinion here Wes, but I'll echo what others have said. I don't believe "no one cares." I do think a lot of viewers, like myself, just don't take the time to leave a comment, even though we do notice and enjoy the changes you've tried this year. As you said, you try to make videos that you'd enjoy watching, and that's exactly why you're one of my favorite people to watch. I always learn something new from you, I always share a laugh with you, and I'm always waiting for the next installment! Please know that your special brain is why we all keep coming back for more! Best wishes to you and your family in the new year, and I can't wait to see what you come up with in 2024!

I really like the diversity in what you present us with. Furthermore the high amount of views of older videos (for my part) is trying to catch up with previous videos - again a stamp of approval. Happy new year from Denmark to you and your family 🎉🎉🎉

Great work Wes. I love and can identify with your approach on everything you do. Always well made. Never skip ahead. And I love your family man connection to "Wifey", "Kido", and Max. Keep up the great work.... -first time commenter; long time viewer

Wes, I cannot speak for anyone but me, but I watch your videos for your unique ability to problem solve and the variety of projects you take on. “A day in the life” kind of approach. Your build it projects intrigue me, not because I’ll ever do what you do, but because at this stage of life I won’t. As to length, I prefer 25-50 minutes; maybe I’m different. 😅
