I think that if he never beefed with rappers as much as he did, he would've been a great lyricist held high by many people around the 2000s which if he kept pushing from there, he would've been praised as much as a rapper like Eminem, Dr Dre, etc. Old school legends that kept their shine and even with rap changing to more trap, fans would've still bumped the lyrical stuff he'd make till this day. But I honestly put Canibus very high in my ranking, I once came across his music and I instantly loved it, this happened around the time I started listening to more underground music and Canibus was probably my favorite out of all the emcees I listened to. I specially like his early work: Can-I-Bus, 2000 B.C., Rip The Jacker and the Mic Club album. And I do agree, Rip The Jacker had probably some of the greatest beats but I think he had many on his other albums too. Patriots for example from the first album. It's a beat that sounds military, like they'd sampled or immitated an old army song and the lyrics went perfectly with it. In my opinion 2000B.C. is my favorite album, I love all the songs, I know the whole album from beginning to end. Production: 8/10, Lyricism: 9.5/10, storytelling: 6/10 (it was mostly hard bars put together making dope songs, but it also had it's occasional rhyme or two in there talking about something that happened and what he went through basically being "thrown out of hip hop") all around I think the album was fantastic 9/10! And Canibus himself is in my opinion a solid 8/10. LikI said, I enjoy his earlier work the most, his newer stuff not as much, but I'll always check it out and sure enough get surprised every time withhoe lyrical he still is! That said Canibus will always be somewhere in my top 3 best emcees!!!

Well what we learn from this is that beefs and all don't bring permanent success. In terms of old school it is Canibus And in 21st century its our king push. (Though he killed many rappers lyrically but ultimately the one who tops the charts wins) Btw great vid man. You deserve a lot more subs.

AMR, Sony, EMI and the big 3 will filter every single jam you out out through Clear Channel and get absolutely ZERO play on any station. Canibus, Rasskass and hella people was comin up between 97 and 2001. 1999: Black Star has a video called Respiration playing on MTV, along with DITC, Etc... You could hear Canibus and hella people comin up! Blackstar came out with Respiration, DITC and Big L came out (though Big L got killed). The marketing wasn't about him. Plain and simple. 97-2001 was the absolute height of battle rap. That being said, you pull out a note pad while we're supposed to be battling lyrically, you gotta get the hell outta my face. Regardless, he's still brilliant. Solid analysis. Respect and love!

Coupled with poor beat selection, I think he lacked musical skills. Yes, his lyricism was on steroids but you need more than that to make it big, otherwise you get stuck on the underground. Look at Em, for example, the guy can rap hiss ass off but he combines that with delivering his raps in melodic tones. Sometimes he even sings. Canibus was just raw bone, no soft tissue or flesh to make it beautiful
@hiphopcircle

Interesting perspective. Raw talent doesn't always translate to commercial success. Sometimes you need to package it into a digestible package that can translate beyond the few hardcore fans
