He said it himself: the Pistons and a few other teams would have drafted him, but he and his agent already had the deal with the Lakers, and they specifically preferred that situation. He told teams, if they drafted him, he would refuse to sign. He and his agent prioritized being in the right situation, especially after being in the wrong place in college, initially. As far as the lack of recruiting out of high school, he said by not playing AAU … it pretty much makes you an unknown quantity. I guess college scouts and coaches only watch the big AAU tournaments, nowadays.

I knew that he was gonna be a solid role player but with how he's playing, he's a solid *starter.* A lot of casuals (and lowkey racists) say that he's only getting hyped because he's on the Lakers and is white, yet that cannot be further from the truth. Dude is actually a reliable scorer and defender. Not to mention that he's sneaky athletic and has some handles with the ball. The hype is deserved, especially since he's undrafted and was expected to be a benchwarmer. For those that are skeptical, PLEASE do yourself a favor and watch him play.

Could defend, could score, could play off the ball. He was basically like a swiss army knife that you could insert in multiple teams/situations and can still be very helpful to the team. That's how I view Ausin Reaves as: one of the best role players in the league. Is he currently overpaid? Yes. Will he be an allstar in the future? There is a chance, but most likely no. I don't understand why you wouldn't believe Austin Reaves would turn down the Detroit Pistons at the 42nd pick. The Pistons were only offering a two-way contract, so there was NO benefit whatsoever to be drafted by Detroit. If I could choose between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Detroit Pistons for the same, exact contract, I would choose L.A. every time. Rob Pelinka also told Reaves he would ONLY get the contract if he stopped doing private workouts for other NBA teams. So right off the bat, there were fewer teams considering Austin, because he complied with Pelinka's condition. 🏀💰
