Your question gut punched me (since I forgot you even were going to ask one lol) and it had me thinking about something I was ruminating on for a while. With the rise of tik tok and by extension just social media in general this past decade it seems as if the form of “sitcoms” is taking on a more hyper real and individualist approach as I see friends, family, and strangers constructing drama for the teeniest amounts of clout. You weren’t kidding when you said were living in a sh1tty American sitcom, and I think it’s because we live in a place where people are isolated by design and rely on what we see on screens to teach us about socialization. Now we all have screens and our own cameras so one choice is to become a sitcom character yourself.

surprised to not hear a mention of the iconic 'community' (2009-15) here! they were an example of a sitcom that did NOT work during the cable era despite having a relatively episodic format (battling with the office and parks and recs), and only rose to popularity thanks to streaming services like netflix. witty diverse talented cast, extremely funny, relatable, quirky, found family dynamic of a group of college friends, with every character going through different stages in their lives. down to earth but still upbeat and hopeful. i don't think the future of sitcom is doomed just because cable tv is gone. just shifting to a new era where shows can/must be binge-able.

My problem with modern sit-com's, including the awful animated ones, is that the majority of the humor is built on being... well, mean. Someone is always the butt of a joke, someone is always insulted in a snarky way, and in real life, they would feel bad. One reason I love friends is because a common plot is for any given episode is that 2 characters get in a fight and say mean things to each other. By the end of the episode they apologize and acknowledge that they were mean to each other. I watched an episode of family guy for the first time a short while ago, and it was awful in this respect. Like you mentioned in the video, I like to picture myself as part of the main cast, and I think by now it's easy to see what kind of show I would like to be a part of.

I still love the sitcoms from the 70s to the 2010s, and I'm barely an adult, I don't relate to any of the "found family" sitcoms. I agree with you when you say its sitcoms refusal to change that's killing them, nowadays all the popular sitcoms you hear about on social media are just reboots or revisals of old sitcoms like Fuller House or iCarly. Theyre trying to profit off nostalgia instead of adapting to changing generations. But there's still a place for sitcoms in television, we don't *need* every show to have character development or a changing cast.

Really great and informative video essay! Didn't really know much about sitcoms before the Friends era, but it now makes sense why they're falling out of favour today. I think another reason that wasn't mentioned is that the competition for entertainment services is so saturated, that television production companies are struggling to retain the attention of the average young viewer. You mentioned Netflix and other streaming services, but these sitcoms also have to battle with KZitem, TikTok, social media sites, and even the entire video gaming industry. Competition was never this intense for sitcoms 30-70 years ago, and that allowed them to succeed putting out shows with almost no character depth or story, and still be immensely successful.

The best and most popular 2020s sitcom is Ted Lasso. Interestingly, that show is quite serialized since completely episodic shows like Seinfeld don't work as well on streaming. Also, Ted Lasso features a lot of serious moments, which leads me to believe that future sitcoms blend genre a lot more, and they're gonna be closer to comedy-dramas than full comedies. TV is in a transitional phase right now, so there aren't many obvious sitcom juggernauts out there. However, the world always needs comedy in its media, so I'm sure the sitcom will come back in an evolved state at some point.

The thing is, people want to have instant access to episodic sitcoms like Seinfeld, Friends and The Office, so they can use it as comfort food media. I agree with you, in that it’s much harder nowadays to establish a new sitcom in the classic cable style on streaming (just look at One Day at a Time), but, honestly, I can’t exactly pinpoint why that is.

@@brokengirrafeIt’s been said that biggest difference between streaming services and TV programs is the release schedule. Streaming shows from what I can tell tend to release an entire season’s worth of content all at once and be more ongoing (I.e. you are more likely to have to watch all episodes in order) as opposed to weekly releases on TV that were of more episodic programs. Maybe episodic shows don’t appeal to people who are used to binging everything.

I don't think every sitcom has two subplots. Sidenote, you skipped over The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show and jumped right into I Love Lucy. The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show would have been an interesting segway into discussing the commercial aspect of those early shows and how many had direct sponsorships funding the production. Also, another sidenote I'm not sure if Ralph ever seriously threatened Alice. Ralph and Alice had a very dysfunctional marriage but seeing how Ralph was a big softie underneath he never really did much outside yelling and mentioning hyperbolically one of these days he was going to knock her to the moon. Alice was quite the spitfire and was always able to hold her own. Both versions of Alice actually were as she was played by two different actresses. Ralph had a great heart, and it is showed many times throughout the series he had a deep love and respect for her despite his temper. The Honeymooner when it went to series actually toned down lots of arguments too. Making the show more about Ralph and his schemes. Another note, black sitcoms really got their footing around the 1970s with shows like Good Times, The Jeffersons, Benson, Diff'rent Strokes, What's Happening!! and Sanford and Son. It is heavily debated if these shows properly reflected black life in a tasteful way, but they definitely were getting more and more representation. It also should be highlighted Eric Monte who was involved in creating Good Times, The Jeffersons and What Happening!! allegedly got hugely fucked in terms of royalties by "progressive" programmer Norman Lear. Which is a story more people should know. Eric didn't receive a single credit on The Jeffersons for creating George Jefferson either.
@analogblues
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s wrong of her to claim Alice was under constant threat of physical abuse. That is in no way what the show is about. Nor would Ralph ever do that. It was a reference Ralph made that wasn’t ever a serious threat. Though, of course, it doesn’t play well now. But that is never part of the plot or anything that happens. It’s a great show that deserved a better summary.

besides the death of cable, i blame our current mental health crisis for the downfall of sitcoms: - trends of higher loneliness and fewer friends = difficulty relating to social dynamics - disillusionment towards society and life in general = shift towards absurd/ironic humor instead of relatable scenarios - nostalgia for time before crisis = humor increasingly derivative of childhood media, stunting innovation - escapism = speculative fiction is more popular than realistic fiction; serial shows are more popular than episodic ones - shorter attention spans = consuming comedy in bite sized pieces (i.e. tiktoks) which is harder to do for other dramatic genres. you don't have to be emotionally invested in the characters of a goofy meme to laugh at it. i feel like sitcoms, like most mass media, are at their best in the "well-off america" you mentioned, in times of (mainly mental) stability when people have the luxury to laugh at quirky characters on a screen. that's why the 90's were a renaissance in american tv and film: it was between the fall of the soviet boogeyman and the rise of the islamic boogeyman. for the average american, it was an era of relief between eras of anxiety and cynicism... and now we're in an age of unprecedented anxiety and cynicism. overall, really thought-provoking video! thanks for catalyzing these kinda discussions :3

I think there are other reasons for the downfall of the sitcom then the economic answer provided by this video, and the sustained popularity of the genre on streaming services should indicate that. Here in Brazil, sitcoms are very well accepted and are successful! But the drop is noticeable. And generally people prefer more nostalgic sitcoms that marked the childhood or adolescence of many! Some stations here always show the same sitcoms as always because they are successful. Like comedies from the 90s/00s, for example: Like "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" "Everybody Hates Chris" or "My Wife And Kids" And Nickelodeon sitcoms and among other examples. And more adult sitcoms that are more successful on streaming, such as "Big Mouth" on Netflix and classics like "Friends" and "The Office".

The sitcom will bounce back. But we are in a down period right now. Before The Cosby Show, the sitcom was dead. But The Cosby Show revived the sitcom genre. And we got 30 years of great sitcoms from that. But now we another sitcom to come along and set the world on fire once again to get that ball rolling. My issue with sitcoms is there all the same. No matter what type of sitcom it is, or who stars in it, they all follow the same story beats. If the sitcom is about a nuclear family, then they're always portrayed as dysfunctional. The husband is a fat disgusting slob who hates his wife and kids, has a nasty personality that never improves, and is stuck in a dead-end job that he’s too lazy to quit. The wife is conventionally attractive and is way smarter and more responsible than her husband. She has to constantly nag him to do any adulting tasks, so she basically serves as his second mom. She tries to have a life outside of the family, but because the husband is too incompetent to cook, clean, or take care of his own children, she has to be the one to give up her dreams and social life. The married couple will be so incompatible that a running gag throughout the show is how and why did they end up together in the first place. They'll stay together anyway because divorce is still stigmatized. Also, the wife or husband (usually the husband) will have a friend who is single and is mocked and ridiculed because of that fact. Even though the entire show hammers home the message that marriage is a trap and children are soul-sucking gremlins that ruin your body and finances. Because being in a dysfunctional marriage is better than being single. The kids are just a smaller, dumber, and or slightly more annoying version of their parents. The son is a loser who's flunking every class and is obsessed with losing his virginity to the most popular girl in school. The daughter is a smartass and a whiny brat that hates her family and just wants to run away with her loser boyfriend, whom the father hates. The family will also lampshade their constant financial struggles even though they all still go to bed with a full stomach, get an education, live in a crime-free non-ghetto suburban neighborhood, and wear clean clothes every day. Because showing actual impoverished families where the kids have to drop out of school to work and who have to eat sleep for dinner is too sad. If the sitcom is about a group of friends, then the protagonist is a generically handsome white guy who’s completely unremarkable and average in every way. He has a group of 1-5 friends whom he’s known since childhood and are all just as if not more so worse off than him. Because if he were the only loser in his friend group, that would make him look worse by comparison. He’ll constantly lament about how single and lonely he is despite making no efforts to change his horrible personality and rampant misogynistic microaggressions. He'll have a crappy job tha he doesn't quit because he lacks ambition, and that's where all of his friends are. Every interaction he has with his parents boils down to, "why can you be more like your brother/sister?!" One of his best friends will be a woman who has been crushing on him since forever. Because the protagonist is shallow and denser than a black hole, and the woman is too chickenshit to just tell him, they’ll be in a never-ending loop of pining from afar and misunderstanding one another until the series finale. They'll both keep dating other people who are way better for them, but they will all fail because the show wants to ensure the audience that they belong together. The show will end with them getting married, him getting a good job, having babies, and ultimately rewarding the protagonist's poor behavior and laziness. If the sitcom is about a work environment, then the protagonist will also be a generically handsome, boring, and average white dude with no personality who is in a dead-end position. He’ll have a boss who is either so painfully incompetent that it’s a miracle the company hasn’t gone bankrupt or completely sadistic and treat the profession like a military boot camp. There will be a revolving door of side characters who fulfill a specific archetype, but the only characters who will matter are the protagonist's best friends and love interest. If the sitcom is about a single person, they’ll get married and have babies by the finale, because that's the only thing important in American society; especially if they're women. It’s all the same story told over and over again. It’s frustrating because there are so many young aspiring writers with innovative and nuanced ideas for tv shows. But because companies are too paranoid about taking any risks, they get sidelined in favor of the same derivative pieces of shit that were popular 30+ years ago.
