Launched on July 7th, 2003 to explore and study the Martian surface, Opportunity (a part of the Mars Exploration Rover missions) landed on Mars in January 2004. It was designed to last a 90 sols, but the hardy rover managed to roam across the Martian soil for nearly 15 years, travelling for about 45 km, the farthest distance achieved by any extra-planetary robot.
Opportunity made several landmark discoveries on Mars, chancing upon the first meteorite found on another planet. It discovered the evidence that ancient Mars had water on its surface and might have been capable of sustaining microbial life.
In June 2018, when a storm engulfed the whole planet of Mars, the rover ceased all communications with Earth. Scientists at NASA made thousands of attempts revive the rover from here, but it was too dark for the poor little rover to charge its batteries.
