During this time period Algeria was ruled by Algerian kingdoms such as the zayyanids, zirids, Fatimids, rustamids etc. A more accurate comment would be to say “ Moroccans were Algerians at the time” this is because the marinids who ruled Morocco at the time were from the banu marin tribe who came from the Zab region of biskra located in eastern Algeria🇩🇿 in the region known “ifriqyah” Abdul HAQQ 1 the first marinid ruler was born in Algeria in eastern Algeria. Similarly the Almohads beforehand were also of Algerian origins Abdul mumin the first caliph was from tlemcen Algeria and every Almohad ruler comes from his lineage 🇩🇿 Algerians already had a established identity since Numidia and were ruled by Algerian kingdoms however Morocco didn’t have a consistent identity many of Morocco rulers are not ethnically Moroccan like the Almoravids who are Mauritanian 🇲🇷

700 years of war cast upon them and they finally succeeded, by the grace of God. I don't know how tolerant I would have been either. Converting to Islam in such a war is treachery. For how to Islamicly treat converts away from Islam, or traitors, let us see the sunnah of your prophet: Sahih e Bukhari 6922 "... according to the statement of Allah's messenger: 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'" Sahih e Bukhari 3043 "When the tribe of Bani Qurayza was ready to accept Sad's judgment, Allah's Apostle sent for Sad who was near to him... Sad said, "I give the judgment that their warriors should be killed and their children and women should be taken as prisoners." For how to treat infidels waging war against you: Surah e Infal verse 12 "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them."

Fascinating and tragic. Great video resuming the book I'm reading by Matthew Carr "blood and faith" This was a sad chapter in Iberian history. I live in Spain now and my wife and I went to a town in the interior of Alicante called Alcalali. It was empty in 1609 after the expulsion and had to be repopulated with christians. The way the moriscos were treated in most areas was awful to say the least. And even though in the rebellions the Muslims committed atrocities you can only imagine how much they had been oppressed and persecuted for years and years to even drive them to act in such a way. You have freedom until a gov beurocrat says you don't and in this case the Catholics only kept their promises for so long of religious freedom until they didn't.

But were not the Muslims in someone else's country... Spain, which previous to the Muslim conquest belonged to Spain? Brits would have done the same to the Normans after 1066 had they been able. They did try and the Harrying of the North by William the Conqueror was the devastating result for us. And they were all Europeans. So a completely different culture like Islam would have been more than understandable... to an Englishman.
@Brandon-xp1ob

@@kenhutley971 Hi. I'm not a historian but I guess I'll answer the best I can. The first thing is that there was no "Spain" back in 711 when the Arab forces crossed Gibraltar and began to conquer. Spain as a unified state did not exist until the late 15th century when the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella married, so referring to this are as Spain during that time is like me referring to the united states' in the same room he period. It simply didn't exist yet. The occupants of the peninsula were the visigoths who came and plundered Rome and continued on and settled in the Iberian peninsula. The visigoths were going through somewhat of an internal power struggle and were already in a weekend state when they were conquered. I think one of the heirs to their thrown might have conspired with the Muslims to overthrow their long and facilitate an invasion but I'm not sure. I believe most inhabitants did not oppose their new leaders. The visigoths were Christian. Again, I'm not a historian. I think a lot of us knew how ruthless the Catholic church could be back in those days. As far as I know under Muslim rule everyone was allowed to pursue their own religious beliefs. Jews, Muslims and christians all lived peacefully in Al Andalus. There may have been some incidents but the Muslim state at the time did not oppress and punish people not willing to convert to Muslim though I think they did pay some kind of fee or tariff for being allowed to worship. Some people continued to be christians and others willingly converted to Islam. We also have the Arabs to thank for a vast wealth of knowledge in science and mathematics. Algebra is just one example. Cordoba under Arab rule in the late 11th century was one of the few European cities thriving and was a prominent center for learning and culture while most of Europe was in the so called dark ages. Please don't take this as me liking Muslims more than christians or anything like that. I understand also that many christians during the same time in Muslim rule areas were persecuted as well by Muslims. But the general idea I get from learning what happened in post reconquista Spain 1492-1614 was that many law abiding, good, hard working citizens just wanted to live their lives, practice their religion, raise their children, till their land but simply couldn't because the Catholic church viewed them as heretics and forcibly obliged them to convert to Christianity or die. Many converted to Christianity but secretly continued living a Muslim life. The book I'm reading is fantastic. It's worth a read. "Blood & faith" Matthew Carr. I think he's from the UK Cheers!

@@Brandon-xp1ob christians and jews weren't allowed to practice their religion under Islamic rule, that is a well known fallacy. It's for a reason that there are no visigothic churches in southern Spain. Muslims either destroyed churches or turned them into mosques like how they did with the cathedral of Cordoba. Islam came to Spain via invasion, therefore it has never had a place in Spain

It's understandable, friend, .... The English have bad memories of the Muslims (and in general, all of Europe), especially the Berbers, North African Muslim pirates who, among other things, carried out raids and looting along all the European coasts. (Greece, Italy, France Spain, Portugal, Holland, England, Ireland... Uh! even Iceland. Documented!) trying to capture as many Christians as possible to sell them as slaves in the Muslim world. You know that. I bet you don't? ...The preferred prey were children and the women ended up being sold into harems. .... When this happened, the southern Europeans paid the ransom but the English (for their own sake) often couldn't.... As you see, Muslims have never had many fans in Europe.... Eh? .... Greetings.

That is how you had millions of Christian’s in Al Andalus within the peninsula hundreds of years after Muslim rule, not just in the northern Christian kingdoms. This is a good video keep up the great work

"Made up persecution." We have literal saints who were martyred during this time.... At first, the Muslims were in fact tolerant, this was until the Jizya was abolished around the 11th century, without the Jizya, Christians faced the exact same punishments muslims did under the new Catholic monarchs. We can see how prevalent forced conversions just by looking at the religious % in the 10th and 11th centuries. In the 10th centuries, we see a population of around 50/50 Muslims and Christians, with a few Jews, by the 11th centuries, Muslims had skyrocketed to over 75%, with Christians becoming less than 25%. Even this "tolerant" period I spoke of at the start of my previous paragraph wasn't so tolerant, search up Martyrs of Cordoba.

I hope this doesn’t sound ignorant or off putting to anyone, but What I find hard to understand is if Muslims have been persecuted for this long wherever they go that isn’t their native land, why don’t they go to their native place where they can practice all they want all their own customs? I understand it’s a generational thing, but it’s the same for Jewish people - they have Israel so many go there to be what they are or come to USA to be free since USA is for all cultures (although many don’t think so but too bad for them). Me as a Hispanic person, and with Spanish ancestry, have been running away from dictatorships in Latin America but if I moved to France, I would not expect France to adopt my Latin culture into theirs. When in France, it’s the French way! If it was the other way around, like Americans in Saudi Arabia, Americans have to wear veils and can’t sleep in the same bed with a man if unmarried. Outsiders respect the culture they have come into and that is to preserve the culture their in.

I'm Spanish and I descend partly from Moriscos (Muslim converts to Christianity who stayed in Spain) You seem to focus only on the very last stage of Muslim conversions to Christianity BUT you seem to ignore that in the 10th century it's estimated that around 85% of the population in the Iberian Peninsula (8 million people) were Muslim By the time the Moriscos were expelled it is estimated that this was around 300,000 people My question to you is: what do you think happened to the 6,800,000 muslims (85% of 8 million) in Iberia in the 10th century and their descendants? Let me tell you, they converted to Christianity gradually just like the native Iberian population converted to Islam gradually with the islamic conquest Basically the whole story of that period is much more conplex than the official narrative preached by both muslims who claim it was all forceful and brutal and ignore all the previous stages of Muslims converting to Christianity and Christians who claim that the muslims never contributed anything to Iberian culture, cuisine, architecture etc and I'm proud to say that I descend from the Muslims who made Al-Andalus just as much as from the Christians who built an empire

Muslim population of Al-Andalus are descended primarily from Iberians who later converted to Islam and intermarried with Muslim Arabs and Muslim North Africans. The Golden Era of Muslim civilization in Al-Andalus is the Caliphate of Cordoba from 929CE-1031CE. It was the era cultural, religious, social and political progressiveness. After 1031CE, Al-Andalus had divided into many Muslim states known as taifas. Some allied among each to face rival kingdom and encroaching Christian states from northern Iberia while some allied themselves with Christians states to face their rivals. Under Muslim rule, Christians embraced many aspects of Arab culture from language to clothing and cuisine while retaining their Christain faith. These were known as the Mozarabs. There was another group of Mozarabs. These are actually descended from Muslims who converted to Christianity. When Christian rulers captured Muslim territories, its inhabitants were required to convert to Christianity should they choose to remain but were allowed to retain their Arab culture. Gradually the Muslim descended Mozarabs became fully Christianized. After the fall of Granada in 1492, many Muslims chose to stay behind and reluctantly converted to Christianity. Many of course secretly practice Islam in secret while many of the younger generations had become devout Christians. The Moriscos are only referred to Muslims who converted to Christianity after the fall of Granada. The Muslim converts to Christianity from earlier centuries apparently had been forgotten.

Such a huge waste that Muslims keep repeating the same mistakes to this day around the world. In-fighting and divided. Alhamdulillah, it's all within the tests for staying in submission to the Al-Mighty One. Assalamualaikum

Where was the Ottoman Empire and the North Afrikans ? Where’s was Somalia and Ethiopia where was Mali and Gambia. Where was the Muslims ? If this wouldn’t happen I don’t think the Spanish and English would have reached the Amerikkkas. They were emboldened by this tragedy 😔

Ottoman empire didnt existed for most of al Andalus existance, at his end, didnt dominated the mediterranean enough for send help. Some even says andalusis were expulsed fearing they would support an ottoman invsion. North afrikans were in fact the reason of the fall of alAndalus. They were one of the sides of the Cordoba caliphate civil war, and when al murabitun al-muhawidun dominated alAndalus, they weakened its army for prevent rebellions. Ethiopia was a christian kingdom, the Adal sultanate couldnt send any significant help with their geographic position. For certain, for the Navas de Tolosa battl, wich was the end of muslim power, even turks from MiddleEast went to help. I still wonder why the emir made such a bad strategy for the battle, he had good troops and many volunteers. Mali did not cared for something happening so far away. By the way, the same year that jews were expelled from Spain, they were expelled too from Songhay, the dominant sahelian power that time. Spanish reached the americas because muslims were giving the christian excessively high commercial prizes. If not for tha commercial war, maybe they wouldnt had ever went to America. You only know to see with others with hate?

Informative Video. But it seems you like to disregard the moroccan part of the history, specifically not naming the country. A practice which is done by so many "Orient" historians. Saddening

Expelling Muslims and Arabs from Iberia was the best thing in the Spanish and Portuguese histories. Once Muslims were kicked out, both of those countries became major maritims powers and emassed great wealth.

My native Peruvian, Arabic and Dutch ancestors probably disagreed. After a 80 years war the best thing the Dutch did was expel the Spanish.
