Chad Kremer is a character out of central casting as a bison rancher! Humans have been raising grazing animals for thousands of years. Fences are a recent innovation and ranchers have figured out how to manage. Great profile with some fantastic shots. Bison are an American icon. 🦬

I absolutely agree with the point on field harvest where I have operated I feel harvest truck in the past reducing the stress on the animal is so much more humane and without the over abundance of adrenaline and cortisol, the meat comes out much better. They don’t need stress the stress.

99.99% of these animal's lives are as good as is possible for them... (cared for, protected from disease, harassment, predation, etc.)... and a quick & relatively painless exit when compared to what nature would most often provide. I don't see any ethical problems here (5:00); if anything, we should feel obliged to support this sort of animal husbandry and dietary system.

In Montana in the early 1970s, my uncle had a bison bull that could jump 5-wire fence from a standing start and liked to butt heads with his Hereford bull. No problems with the bison except that you could not really fence it in.

basically american bison, range cattle, and even cape buffalo are not so different. Bison have been known to attack elk at a feeding station. During a drought cape buffalo have been known to drive humans and other animals away from a source water. But maybe the bull in the case at hand is close enough species relationship wise to be tolerated by the bison bulls. American bison today are often hybrids with domestic cattle anyway. I am most impressed with the owner approaching those critters on foot.

Bison and cattle=two different animals. One is indigenous to this area the other isn't. One is by nature before the european invasion a migrating animal. As for that bull. When it comes times for the rut. One of those bison bulls will be sure to make sure that bull needs to be separated from the bison herd. Hybridization is slowly but surely being bred out of bison. Beef meat compared bison is like Spam compared to a porterhouse. Grass fed bison is among the sweetest meat you'll ever taste.

Nope -- not if they are from a disease-free herd or have passed through a 2-year quarantine. Elk on the other hand are well known to transmit brucellosis to cattle (and probably Bison as well, but it is not well documented). In contrast there is no documentation of brucellosis transmission from cattle to Bison or vice versa.

Cost A gate is a couple hundred dollars and can be installed in an hour or so. A cattle guard takes a lot more effort. For gates that are used infrequently it is not worth the effort. This rancher is rotating the herd into different pastures regularly, so a gate is not used that often and can be left open when no cattle are in the paddock.

@rhensontollhouse

About 1/2 of wild bison in YNP are positive for brucellosis. In order to farm bison in your state you will no doubt have to prove they are not infected. Elk and especially wild boar/pigs are the most likely sources these days.
@charleshash4919
13 күн бұрын
The disease issue is a bacterial disease that causes abortion in both species (and undulant fever in people that drink unpasteurized milk from an infected animal). In most states both beef and commercial bison herds need to be certified free from this disease. If both cattle and bison are free from this disease there is no valid commercial reason for the herds to not mix. In any case, even in Montana where the cattle producers use the presence of this disease in wild Bison herds in Yellowstone National Park to block introduction of wild Bison into public lands in Montana such as the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Reserve, there is no documentation of transmission of this disease from bison to cattle, but plenty of evidence of its transmission from Elk to cattle.
