When you can also just go on any social media, find your fav artist, and be like "hey mind if I use this for a personal desktop background?" and they'll probably be like "yea sure" or maybe "I have a bundle of wallpapers on my site for 5 dollar" I use wallpapers from Pikaole (artist) and give them 8 dollars on patreon every month... and that's for tons of wallpapers, icons, and physical merch. I'm a first time watcher who is subbed to Nebula and actually saw your video come up in my feed there! After watching, I immediately had to come here to upvote. I'm in the tech space, but prefer to stay out of any kind of drama until someone I trust makes a video or post breaking things down for me. 😅 I think I avoid a lot of toxicity that way- I get to understand the controversy without having to wade through all the muck myself, if you get me. Anyway, you have a new subscriber! I may be one of few people who watched purely for the topic (and to support smaller creators on Nebula). And if I hadn't seen this video first, you might never have ended up on my radar, because your other content isn't the type of thing that would normally grab my attention/interest. (No offense meant!) But I like the vibes you seem to have curated here on your channel, and thought you were funny and entertaining. So I'll stick around! And give your other videos a try; I think there's a strong possibility that I'll find plenty I enjoy, even if the topic doesn't seem like it'd overlap with my normal interests. Maybe I'll even pick up some new interests as a result, who knows! 😊 (As an aside, you remind me a bit of Hbomberguy... If he were younger, happier, American, and had fully embraced his hair situation. 😂 I don't know if that makes sense to you, but I mean it as a compliment! Because you also strike me as the kind of person who can take any topic that interests you, and your enthusiasm will be contagious enough to draw other people in. For example, I watched his 2-hour long video essay on the origin of the Roblox "oof" sound, which I would not have been REMOTELY interested in otherwise- because I knew from his previous content that he can make literally anything entertaining and engaging.)

I honestly don't think its a bad idea for an app. People look at their phones more than their loved ones faces, so having curated art for your phone that you can refresh regularly makes sense. I've been turning this over in my head, and I just cannot understand why a subscription model would be a good idea for digital wallpapers. People on here have commented how it's good to pay people for their art... And, yeah, you can do that by requiring a one-off payment for each wallpaper you download (whisper it, like an old-fashioned retail business). The app could still function as a way to follow specific artists, and the homepage can be used for seasonal launches, paid promotions, and highlight lesser-followed artists from their rosta. Also, could be more generally about art/photography appreciation, with options for print-on-demand for posters or other products using the artwork. And prices can be set individually in agreement with the artists, so there's more agency for the artist. Perhaps I'm describing something that already exists, but I guess the idea is that it isn't just a marketplace because it would be still be curated by Marques. I think we need to realise that not everything can or should be a subscription service.
@TheKaleb503

Im gonna be honest when I first heard about the app and the high price I assumed it was justified because he was doing revenue split. When I found out it was only 50/50 and he was letting AI on there I was pretty disappointed. Can I afford a $50 wallpaper app? No. In the tech space is $50 unreasonable for a yearly subscription? Saldy not. Lots of weather apps, note apps, and tones of things you wouldnt think of cost an arm and a leg yearly. Im sure he was paying developers a fair wage, and got hefty servers knowing the size of his audience (His yearly phone camera composition take beefy backend to my memory). Lots of upfront costs that "justified" the price.... I understand that in theory... However. Why not do a soft launch? Get beta testers. I dont know how anyone thought launching a brand new app with one of his most popular videos was a good idea. Outside of all of that, I think launching what I would consider an art gallery app then allowing the use of AI is the biggest disappointment. My friend and I recently came up with the term "hotel art" which are for pieces that are visually interesting but carry little to no emotional weight. The app feels like a gallery of hotel art with the us of AI and lack of any communication or summarizes of these pieces. Artists dont even have a bio to say something about themselves. All in all, people have been asking for his wallpapers for years and he found arguably the worst way to provide them. A twitter account that "pays" in exposer would have almost been better than this.
@MorsecodeZ
3 сағат бұрын
The crazy thing for me is most people just use screenshots of stuff they find online or family photos or pictures they take themselves ... This is really only an app for MKBHD fans, which is probably the thinking behind the charge. His fans will pay because it's his app. The revenue thing sounds obnoxious though. Is he going to split every 50¢ on the dollar between all the artists involved? That sounds almost as bad as "doing this work will give you exposure that's better than the money you'll earn." nonsense.

I wanna start by saying that artists are underpaid and making it as an artist is hard and that every artist deserves every penny they get for every second of hard, wonderful work they do. That said...there are some things that are just a harder sell than other things because people are used to just getting them for free (or pseudo free as part of bundles or something) "Nobody" is gonna pay money for a wallpaper. Quotes because surely people have, did, and will. But it is so disgustingly easy to just google image a hi res picture of something you're interested in and use that as your wallpaper for your phone or PC or whatever that this is a VERY hard sell. I'm not saying the artists who made them don't deserve money. Please don't read this is that. All I'm saying is that asking for money for something than 99% of people get for free is a HARD sell. People are used to paying for movies, shows, games, etc, so we're willing to pay for those and sailing the high seas is usually, as Gabe says it, is usually a service issue (there's always exceptions, some people just refuse to pay for stuff when they can get it for free) Paying money for a jpeg is a big ask. The people who actually paid for that, have in the past, or will in the future are saints, suckers, or both. And to be clear, I've paid for art. I've commissioned art. But paying for commissions isn't the same as paying for art that artists put out into the ether. The 150~ I spent on that picture, which I'm happy with and was worth every penny, was shown to the world for free and hundreds/thousands opened that picture I paid 150 bucks for, right clicked, and pressed "save as" for free. There's no universe where I'm perma giving money to artists for stuff not tailor made for me personally. This is just not something normal people paid for and, again with full respect to the artists...anyone who paid any amount of money for a wallpaper that was not tailor made for you by artist commission, got hustled. You are a stooge. You are a muppet. You are a mark. You got got. Or you knew that and just wanted to support a YTer or artist you like with full knowledge you were paying for what amounted to a scam service. So long as its consensual, I'm ok with it and don't think less of you. But all in all, wallpapers are, again with slim exceptions, a free item and have been free on the internet since basically their inception. Paying for wallpapers feels like paying for movie trailers. Its just something that we, collectively as a society seemed to have agreed upon "yeah, this is fucking free"
