Dollar tree in the US has tons of different loose pigment eyeshadows that are literally exactly the same as mica (it is mica and some other things,) and you get a LOT more than you do when you buy "normal" mica. It's been so fun to experiment cheaply lol! FYI: crushing it up finely is super important if you use the potted stuff.

A small mortar and pestle can help crush things like eyeshadow if anyone plans on using it often for craft applications. Porcelain or stainless would be a good choice for ease of cleaning. Also, the vibrancy of color will vary by brand. Some of the cheap eyeshadows don’t have the same quality of pigmentation as better types. (Eyeshadow usually has a base of kaolin clay , talc, or mica. The mica versions are probably best for use with resin since they are less likely to react strangely)

Peter Brown has a channel where he does woodturning and he uses a lot of resin in his projects... He has done a whole series of experiments on using various household items as pigments for resin...Some with great sucess and others have been epic failures.... With the eyeshadow, he used a mortar and pestle to crush it to a fine enough powder so that is dispersed properly through the resin with no lumps...

Hi. As far as I am aware, a lot of eyeshadows are made with mica powders. But what I love about these is what happens as you finish pouring them in, is with the mica powder you get rings at the top of the mould as you finish pouring them in, but with the eyeshadow I couldn’t see any which is perfect when you want a nice smooth colour on a finished piece. I also love how you get so many shades of colours ranging from light, dark, pastels, metallics etc. And the best bit is when you have them in Pound shops, they are great to pick up & save over a few months & gift to your resin crafter at Christmas. Also when you by these multipacks, inevitably there will be colours you don’t like the look of when you wear them, so instead of chucking them out or leaving them to pile up thinking 💭 “So in so where’s some of these, I’ll give them to them when I next see them” & they get shoved to the back of a cupboard etc & you forget to pass them on. So this is a great way to use up the left over colours in your eyeshadow tray. Or a family or friends.

I've very recently begun working with UV resin, and while I already a bunch of supplies that work with it I've wanted a lot of supplemental supplies for things like coloring resin. I've seen alcohol inks working beautifully, but I'm disabled and don't work, so every penny is important, you know? After thinking for a bit I remembered seeing people make alcohol inks from permanent markers. I have a BUNCH OF of those... I like to buy them when I find them on sale. So, I broke down a few pens and put them into some alcohol I had on hand. Turns out they work beautifully!! I even put them into little nail polish bottles leftover from my nail art blogging days... They're not perfect, but they definitely work! Next I'm going to experiment with making metallic inks and glitter inks... Hopefully it works!

I have used eye shadow and it works perfectly fine. If you get the eye shadows with the iridescent and/or pearlescent or glitter shades they will be more like mica powder. A lot of eyeshadows are made with mica powders. You can find really cheap ones at dollar stores and the ones that are shiny take very little to color the resin. It offers you a wider variety of colors (you know, like 5 different greens in one kit; etc.) and sometimes, if you specifically want a more flat looking color, the eyeshadow can not be beat in price. Thank you for your experiments. For people starting out in resin, they sometimes need to see some one actually using it, to give them that extra push of confidence. Especially since it is not exactly a 'cheap' hobby. Large projects can run into a chunk of change. But, well for me, I don't drink, don't smoke -- what do I do? (nod to Adam and the Ants) I spend that money on my resin hobby.

Eye shadow is less pigmant rich so you often end up with duller colours. See, mica powder is used to colour eye shadow. Pure mica powder won't stick to your eyelids so it makes sense that the eyeshadow won't be as pigmented seeing as its a pigment mixed with other products whereas mica is a pigment alone.

I learnt to use mica as a colourant when I was making soap (both melt-and-pour as well as cold- and hotprocess). Did you know that mica is often used in body products like shampoo, body wash, conditioner and so on, for aesthetic purposes? It was (probably still is, but I wouldn't know because I make my own) especially popular in shampoos because it makes beautiful shimmery patterns in liquids.

If you crush the eye shadow and bake it at 150 for 20-30 minutes then run it through a mortar and pestle before using it the clumping doesn't happen
