At my old helpdesk job, I would always say (especially on the phone), "let me look into to that further for you, can I put you on hold?".

Keep them on the line while you Google it and/or run a couple bogus commands in the command prompt to make it look like you're doing something while you try to get the answers

I always say "This is a problem I have not encountered before. I need to do a little research before I can go any further." Then I research, and if I can't figure it out I bring it to the rest of the IT team to brainstorm. In my experience, if you are working at a help desk, and its a strange problem, the higher ups have no problem helping out. Help desk is the lowest position you can have in IT, and I feel the people above you will understand that you can only do basic troubleshooting (if you are just A+ certified). I do need to go to the rest of the department quite often, because issues will often be out of the help desk paygrade.

Thank you so much for this information, I'm three weeks into my System support / help desk role or what ever it is and I had a client that couldn't log into her outlook account, I didn't know what to say but by saying the honest truth of not knowing how to solve the issue but saying how I'll need some time to research and understand the issue further. I looked online and it was as something as basic as going to the user accounts and removing their outlook account and then logging off of their actual PC and with a password reset to log back in and it was fixed, But now I know what to say when I'm totally lost for words thank you so much. This will help me get over phone anxiety to an extent.

Question. I just noticed that one of the responses includes “I’ll get back with you in 10 mins.” I always assumed Help Desk Techs needed to keep the end users on the phone until their problem is fixed, even if it’s putting them on hold to research or ask a co-worker. Are you actually aloud to hang up and try to fix the problem without the added pressure of them being in your ear??

thanks for this I am just now starting out debating on how to get into I.T I was thinking about getting a desktop/it support specialist job while I study for my CCNA so I can become a network admin. Still debating on if thats the way to go I still need to research what careers the CCNA will prepare me for. What do you think considering what my plan is ?

I think the CCNA is a certification that a TON of jobs are looking for. It can open the doors for many opportunities. Still focus on getting into the field with an entry level job then work your path from there. Things can change.

Hey I have a question.. Are there any jobs starting off It that doesn't require you to talk to people in a help desk manner? Something where you would just work on known problems to fix a situation? More technical than verbal because I talk really fast sometimes and people can't understand me and when I try to slow it down I usually stutter.
@Itcareerquestions

Not typically. Pretty much now a days almost every job is going to require some sort of end user interaction at some level.

I mean anything is possible but most of the time information technology degrees dont focus too much on programming. CIS or IS degrees will focus more on programming which is something you'll want to have some knowledge in.
