If the driveshaft u-joint doesn't bust be prepared for some scary skidding! In reality one of the clutch packs that is shared with the forward and reverse "gears" burned up. That's what that smell was. They're basically just paper. From experience the frictions will just be glazed over and black with a nasty smell to them. If is really bad then the friction material just flakes off after it burns up and ends up in the pan.
@C.I...
4 жыл бұрын
@@mysock351C It hadn't occurred to me that automatics could have clutches (though by your description they don't rub). I would have thought they would use a toothed gear inside a toothed "shaft" (more an inside out cog) instead of a friction plate. Are there reasons this car (and others like it) doesn't/don't use something like that?
@mysock351C
4 жыл бұрын
@@C.I... They have what are called clutch packs (and bands). A clutch pack is literally a stack of steel plates and paper-lined frictions. Usually something like 6 or 8 of them that act as a wet clutch. There are also bands (a large steel strip with paper friction material) that are used in some transmissions to lock a reaction drum. The planetary sets provide the various ratios of reduction as different clutches lock/release the various members of each planetary gear set (ring gear, spider/planet gear assembly, and sun gear). There are also one-way sprag clutches as well (like a freewheel on your bicycle) that are used for routing power through the gear train. If you toast one of these it can also cause a loss of one or more drive gears.

There is (depending on the vehicle) a control module which manages shifting into the next gear. It will either be built into the ECU or it will be an independant module. Either way, it will detect and prevent a bad gearshift (from, say drive to park while moving or from drive to reverse) until the vehicle eventually stops. Also, there's a good chance that after slamming this one into reverse so much has trashed the fricton bands that engage the planetary gear sets in the gearbox. This would also explain the smell of burning clutch and why the vehicle needed insane amounts of throttle just to roll. They use a similar material to clutches so the smell from one being worn excessively would be extremely similar. They also wear down insanely fast if they are subjecct to excessive stress or bad shifting maneuvres. Say, using park as a brake or slamming into reversewhile moving forwards. Once they're worn out... they slip, and once they slip... you need more revs to get moving, and the vehicle will be a lot slower than it's intended to be. OR, you end up sat there revving the tits off it in drive and not moving at all.

Eventually it got to the point that it would take a lllooonnnggg time to switch to 2nd gear (because of the knock sensor). So I would treat it as a manual and shift though the 1st-3rd gears until I got up to speed. It seemed to work better when I did that and I had no idea why what was wrong at the time. Over a while of doing this, I was shifting out of an intersection (30+mph), and I accidentally went from 3rd to "R" instead of "D".... ALL FOUR WHEELS LOCKED UP.... Amused. I did that in my ‘82 Bronco once on accident when I still had my automatic transmission installed. Thank GOD for icy roads and a decent torque converter without a lockup function.

untouchable, light after darkness, i agree. I have accidentally tried shifting in my manual and the lever hit a block and it would not engage until i would bring the car speed back to 0.

Interesting: Reversing while driving as a single-use "super emergency brakes" when you lose the main brakes because once you use it, your gearbox is toast.

I did this by accident once long ago, driving an old 80's square body chevy. I was going 55-60mph when I went to shift it into neutral to coast down a hill. I missed it and accidentally put it in reverse. WHAM! Instantly stalled my V8 diesel engine, lost all power steering, power brakes, and I skidded to a stop in traffic. Thankfully I yanked it out of reverse and was able to coast onto the side of the road, where I cussed and punched the ceiling of the cab for a while. Then I cranked it to life.... and drove home without issue. That transmission never did give out on me. It survived for years after, until I rolled the truck into a ditch and totaled it. It was a Turbo 400, just for the record, powered by a 6.2l detroit diesel.

With older automatics you will for sure just break the parking pawl and have yourself two neutrals.

I accidentally did this once, going about 5 mph. Rapid clicking as the parking pawl tried to engage until I stepped on the brake, causing the car to suddenly stop. Not all that dramatic, really.

As far as his very last comment about having to throw your automatic in reverse to stop when your brake line bursts.. you could use the emergency brake also. Just hold the button down or hold the lever and gently use it like a brake. They are connected by cables so completely independent from the normal fluid and line brake system and will still work when the primary system fails.

Wow that is wild ! Its like the vehicle has a safety device or something ! My sister was driving our familys 1966 Chevy Belair Station Wagon. Well, while we were climbing a hill going about 30mph, I said "Hey Debbie" "are you in low gear"??. She grabs the shifter and accidently puts it in reverse ! There was a huge BANG !! and the car stalled out. ( I think it fainted !) Anyway it started right up and drove fine. Nothing broke !! lol., and we never told Dad !...until 20 years later ! lol !

It’s a safety feature in the valve body of the transmission. In the end they burned the clutch packs in the transmission that’s why it was slipping bad at the end.

Most newer cars have a safety interlock, above a certain output speed the trans will not drive out of the forward gears, some older cars, like my fathers old Dart if you put it in reverse it in reverse it would outright stall the engine because the trans was shifted into reverse, pressure would drop pretty quickly and would be disengaged from the engine to avoid reverse engine spin, it's a very simple yet effective solution to a possible problem.

Did that accidentally with a 1963 Chevy Impala. SS, convertible, 283 with a Powerglide. I was doing about 40 mph, wanted to engage neutral whilst rolling to hear the engine revving. Lever went too far. Entire drivetrain froze, engine stopped, wheels blocked. Came to a halt screetching. Started the car again, and never had a problem. The PG is a durable transmission.

Looks like they finally roasted one of the clutch packs. The friction material is basically paper so if it gets too hot it either glazes or just burns up and disintegrates.

a german dude did this with a manual, eventually the output shaft overpowered the input one and made the engine spin backwards and made the car run only with 2 cylinders. when they removed the head cover they found that two rocker arms snapped when the engine spun backwards, it also appears that the reverse gear grinded enough to not engage at all

I accidently engaged reverse in my 71 Dodge tradesman 100 van. It went in to reverse at 40mph locking both tires in rear. If I had hit the gas it would have been a spectacular burnout but i was able to quickly put it back in to drive without issues.

I know first hand that a 1976 Chrysler Cordoba with a 318cu engine... It will engage at 100mph.. did it on accident while manual shifting... Went 1, 2, and skipped D N and straight to R... I'm glad I had my seatbelts on... It kept me pinned damn near on the steering wheel until I could get my foot off the gas... It left the longest set of parallel spin marks in history... It did wound it though.... It permanently locked the differential...
