These fish can easily live 15 years in captivity and an astounding 30 years in the wild. They eat everything, they are resilient to temperature, nirates and Nitrite concentration. If I had my own backyard pond and I caught a comet goldfish that big I would take it home as a trophy. They are invasive species anywhere in the Americas, North and South. So they dont belong in out water systems. But if you wish to keep them, you will need a large body of filtrated water and a varied diet. They can be very rewarding pets.

Releasing a pet goldfish into the wild can have negative consequences for the environment. Goldfish are an invasive species, which means they can quickly reproduce and outcompete native fish for resources. They can also disrupt the natural balance of the ecosystem by stirring up sediment and altering water quality. When goldfish are released into a natural waterway, they can spread diseases or parasites to native fish populations. Additionally, goldfish are known to eat the eggs and young of native fish, which can have a significant impact on the survival of those species. Therefore, it is important to make sure that pet goldfish are kept in a suitable environment and not released into the wild. If you can no longer care for your goldfish, consider finding a responsible new owner, asking a pet store to take it in or contacting a local animal shelter or fish rescue organization

My dad used to tell me stories of when he would take my older brother out to my great uncles stocked catfish pond when he was little. He said there were goldfish they used to catch in there a foot long. I never believed him because I've fished that pond many times myself and never seen one. One day my dad and I went and we always were quiet walking onto the dock, this time I ran up and jumped and made a lot of noise. I saw a fucking goldfish had to be over a foot long, it looked like an enormous koi fish. This thing had to weigh some pounds and I wigged the hell out like a little kid. Haven't seen one since. My dad said my uncle put a lot in there a long time ago to help with the algae and for the bass and crappie to eat. Good memory that's for sure

If provided with a suitably large tank as a juvenile and pond as an adult, I think many goldfish can be great pets. Like some other aquarium fish, you can technically train them, they look nice, they don't leave hairs or fecal matter lying around your house, and there is no need to take them on a walk. IMO they are better than any cat or dog could ever be.

Releasing goldfish into the wild is nearly as bad as some people keeping them in a 5 litre fish bowl. Ideally they should have minimum 200 litre tank for a fish that on average grows to 15cm. But if keeping 3 or 4 - you should get 300 litres or more. No goldfish lives past a couple of years in a bowl. But some breeds can live 40 years in a pond.

So as far as the invasive species argument goes, yes, they do eat everything, just like every other dam local fish. It's a goldfish. Not a snakehead fish. They don't murder everything in the pond. In fact, they grow up to be amazingly beautiful fish. When I was a kid, I would buy dime feeders from an old pet shop called "Guppies to Puppies" and set them free in ponds. Over 30 years later, some of them still reign free, growing up to be beautiful giant gold water piggies.

Those you should take to pay lakes or anywhere else with a kid’s pond to fish in. Don’t put them back in wild waterways. Kids love to catch them, though. That, or a good sized coi pond.
