One time, I actually used a razor to cut a notch out on the Residential Evil Gaiden cartridge to see what happens when you try to play it on an original Game Boy. It just shows a screen of text saying that it only works with the GB color. I just had to know!
@Bro-cx2jc
Жыл бұрын
I did the same but by cutting off the notch on the Game Boy itself. I get the same screen I get if I put the game in a Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Light or Super Game Boy. Cool how we can see the screen on a console Nintendo never wanted us to even be able to turn on with the cart inserted. Some carts have unique screens, like Spider Man 2000, with a close up photo of Spidey and the error message. He's even colored in red and dark blue if you try it on a Super Game Boy. I wonder why they bothered coloring him on the SGB for just that error screen alone; one would think there isn't any point to it.

Honestly, I'll always consider the GBC as a successor to the original GB until the day i die. It was it's own console, such as the 3DS is to the DS. There were 3 variants of original Game Boy's (original model, Pocket, and the Light in Japan). Then the Game Boy Color was the new console. Afterwards, game the GBC's successor, the GBA, then the GBA SP and the GB Micro was variants of the GBA. And nobody can tell me otherwise, not even Nintendo themselves, and God knows they've tried.
@Mrtyjr

From the story I read was that when the GBA was still being developed the then president of Nintendo Yamauchi wanted a quick upgrade with color to the GameBoy as the development of the GBA took too long in his eyes. I think that's the logic why Nintendo never saw it as a true successor to the Game Boy, at least that was never intended. You could kinda compare it to the Xbox One X with the Xbox One.

There are two exceptions I know of: Link's Awakening DX and Conker. Link's Awakening doesn't have the color dungeon, so you miss out on that. Conker won't save the same way as you have to go to predetermined save spots and the health is displayed differently.

Another fun fact about Link's awakening DX - there was a special "cutscene" at the end of the game if you beat it without dying. If you played it on an original game boy or game boy pocket, it would play the cutscene from the original non DX version, but if you played it on the GBC it would play an updated version of the cutscene with new art.

theres actually a couple of others I know of with subtle differences. R-Type DX has a completely different menu on the DMG that will only let you play the original two games. On a colour it also has completely recolorised versions of both games, and a "combined mode" that staples both games together. Quest for Camelot is functionally the same game, but the dialogue boxes are displayed at the top of the screen on a colour and at the bottom of the screen on a classic.

Link's Awakening DX has an entire dungeon that makes use of the Color capability of the GBC. You pretty much can't complete it on the regular GB without a walkthrough. So you can easily guess your way inside.

There is at least one game that essentially gives us two games in s single cart: Conker's Pocket Tales. In some of those games, developers really had to put some thought into how to accommodate the game for both versions - often using two different sets of sprites or removing background textures for the black and white versions. The most significant difference, I remember, was the impressive GBC port of Abe's Exodus, which actually works on the original GB, but with many sprites and graphics simplified to make them legible on the black and white screen.

Once I went to a retro gaming convention, and one guy sold GB and GBC carts, 5 for 10 dollars. One of the games I picked was Spiderman for the GBC, and one other that was also called "Spiderman", but for the original Gameboy, that is the gray cartridge whit the cut of corner. Not "The amazing Spiderman", not "Spiderman and the X-men", just "Spiderman". I bought it because I had never heard of it and I was curious, so I put it in my original Gameboy when I got home and I got the "This game will only work on the Game Boy Color" disclaimer. Turns out it was a bootleg of the same GBC Spiderman that I also bought, inside a regular Gameboy cart.

Yeah, no, the "black carts" (including colored ones that are retrocompatible), are just dmg games with special color palettes for the gbc, as opposed to allowing you to select one of the built in palettes during start up. They're not cgb games, since they don't use the new power or the full color palette of the gbc. Says as much on the cartridge (dmg vs cgb), which was a smart move by Nintendo's marketers since it made people think the "black" carts were actually gbc games when they were no different than, say, gb games with super gb features, or, say, gba games with gb player features.

Saying that the dual mode games play the same, just without color, on an OG Gameboy is tad misleading. While the statement is true for most games, some games actually lock content if not played on a Color. For example, Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon Gold, and Pokémon Silver all have a feature that makes use of the infrared transceiver on the top of a Gameboy Color that doesn’t exist on the older Gameboys. Link’s Awakening DX has an entire dungeon locked away if not playing on a Color.

That's because any Game Boy Color game released in a regular Game Boy cartridge is actually just a regular Game Boy game that is upgradable when played on a Game Boy Color, like the older Game Boy games you mentioned that play with new color palettes on the Color. The Game Boy Color is twice as powerful as the OG Game Boy, so games specifically developed for the Game Boy Color cannot be played on an original Game Boy, they're just not compatible. They likely marketed Gold and Silver under the Game Boy Color label because they had just released that console, but both games were developed as original Game Boy titles. Pokémon was absolutely blowing up at the time, they made it a regular Game Boy cart so it could be playable on the millions of older Game Boys that were still in the market, which also guaranteed compatibility across all versions of the game. By the time Crystal came out, there were probably enough Colors on the market to justify making it a Color cart. In fact, I'm willing to bet the entire reason there are discrepancies between the types of cartridges is solely because of Pokémon and it's popularity. In all reality, it became way too popular at the wrong time. Pokémon was released at what should have been the end of the Game Boy's life cycle, but it became so popular that it artificially lengthened the life of the Game Boy by several years and that wasn't necessarily a good thing. They were in a weird spot where they wanted to continue development of the new console and promote it properly, but they also wanted to sell as many games as possible and the only way to do that would be to make it available on 50 million plus consoles that already exist instead of making exclusive to a console that barely anybody has yet.
