Put a small stand in the chamber with one kernel on it, remove the air and use a high watt laser to see if anf how long it takes to pop the kernel. Compare it to kernal at room conditions. Try different color lasers to see which one pops the kernel fastest for the same or similar wattage and which one pops the kernel better ie not burning the shell vs just pooping the kernel. If you could get your hands on a maser (microwave version of the laser, and predecessor to the laser) it would be cool to play around with that. Though a microwave oven is pretty much a maser of sorts.

don't get the dislikes people requested it, he did it. just because it didn't work out like some expected (i actually anticipated this result, because if there was anything inside the corn that would expand enough in a vacuum to cause it to pop, then that would probably just slowly sip through the white end of the corn, where it was connected to the corncob. the pressure doesn't drop anywhere near fast enough to cause it to explode) doesn't mean the video is automatically bad. also, the bubble wrap popping at the end was satisfying to watch :)

This is possible because when you lower the pressure of the atmosphere the boiling point of water reduces so in some cases is boils at room temperature and not 212° F but the vacuum has nothing to do with moister withdrawal

why would someone think putting kernels in the chamber would become a popcorn in the first place? like seriously! it needs high enough temperature to increase the kinetic energy of the moving particles inside the shell; thus, increasing its pressure.

Should the mood strike you to do try this again, I'd be curious about how the vacuumed popcorn cooks. I'm finding that all of the popcorn I cook, no matter how I cook it (including in a commercial style popcorn machine) always comes out chewy, which I (perhaps erroneously) contribute to excess moisture in the kernels. The only remedy I've found to that problem is to leave the bags open in my pantry for several weeks before cooking. What brand of popcorn I buy doesn't seem to matter either.
@ashiqtpain6883

while you cook, blow on it so that the steam dosent get trapped inside the pot. and once ur done, shuffle them around so that there isnt any steam in between the popped kernels either. also, after oil put 1 or 2 kernels in it to see if the oil reached popping temperature.after that put all the kernels in at one go and put the heat as high as possible. i eat popcorn everday

Popcorn pops because of a film of oil on them prevents the water vapor (steam) from escaping. If you coated your kernels with oil first you might get the kernels to pop in your chamber.

okay, so instead of doing something that was rather obvious: nothing will happen. Try heating the popcorn up to different temperatures and see the if it will pop and what threshold in temperature will it continue to pop. Also you can see what kind of affect lower temperatures have on the starch. The kernel may just explode apart at low temps

Dear HPA! Can you try to boil some metal using vacuum chamber? This technique is used to deposit thin metal coating on glass for example. You can try a metal with very low melting point, like solder.
@YodaWhat
7 жыл бұрын
Of course plain old popcorn did not pop due to vacuum, but leave it in at high vacuum for a few days and I predict that it will no longer pop well from heat, either. The internal moisture will largely be sucked out. But popcorn seed has a huge thirst for water. What if you soak in water overnight and then vacuum? What if you heat the seeds while in vacuum? If you can get them to pop at all, it should be with extra violence.
@hbarudi

The difference between zero and 1 atm is not enough to pop the popcorn, this includes sending it out on one of spacex space ships and releasing it out of the space ship. In fact there is a way to calculate how much pressure needed to pop a popcorn kernel. It needs anywhere between 9.2 and about 300 atm to pop the kernel.

Here's a question: does the amount of time in a vacuum matter? Like, would leaving the popcorn in a vacuum for a while cause any change? And I guess, why yes or no?
@ashiqtpain6883
Жыл бұрын
probably not. Like he said the shells are super hard for any pressure change to happen inside. like how u can go very deep into the ocean with a steel suit without crushing your lungs. one solution will be to put a hole in the kernel but then the steam would escape trough that hole. so that sucks

But....okay if there is a small amount of moisture but no gasses, and the reason they pop is from the moisture boiling....? and then further expanding from the heat? Am I getting that right? If I am, then couldn't you heat up the kernels to the point where the moisture boils and then expands but not enough for it to pop, and then before it cools down, shove it in the vacuum chamber and see if it would pop then? Even if that makes sense, I guess it wouldn't be as cool and there certainly wouldn't be a point to it. But just a though (albeit, possibly incorrect thought)

If only you could get heat in there. Pop the corn under vacuum and see if you get extra-fluffy popcorn. Bake the poofed-up cake batter and get the fluffiest cake ever. You could make an archangel cake! Or, make ice cream to the soft freeze stage, put it under vacuum so it poofs up, and then freeze it hard. Take it out, dip it up, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt, perhaps, but maybe, just maybe... Extra fluffy ice cream? Ice cream which caves in on itself? Ice cream that really sucks? ^_~

Get a really powerful laser, (but not a burning one), mount it in the chamber with a remote start, then hang a piece of lightweight foil from the lid in the line of laser fire. put on the lid, suck out the air, let the foil come to a stop, then fire the laser.. will the photons make the foil move?
