She also makes smarter decisions like not responding to Trump’s racist/ misogynistic attacks while Hillary got bogged down responding to Trump. And she’s keeping her eye on the ball and concentrating only on true swing states. Hilary thought she could run up the score by going to states like South Carolina and let the Blue Wall slip away. Also, given the repealing of Roe, the performance in the 2022 midterms, and the recent uptake in female voter registration, and the fact that Kamala is an actually likeable candidate (something which Hillary was quite infamously not), I highly doubt that it will be as close this time. Main difference here is Hillary was uniquely very unpopular on both sides of the aisle. Republicans were never going to vote for her since they had Trump, and many Democrat voters especially younger ones don’t like the Clintons at all. They are seen (rightfully) as being too centre right to be Democrats, hence why Bernie was popular at the time. Hillary was also campaigning like the presidency was simply a coronation, a job she’d be gifted without any hurdles and took it for granted. Kamala on the other hand is campaigning very hard, she’s not taking anything for granted, she knows this is still a race, and has also sought to reach out to the Bernie leaning voters by choosing Tim Walz as her VP candidate. There are many 2016 Bernie supporters who are voting for Kamala because they love Waltz.

Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton are two very different candidates and the baggage Donald Trump carried in 2016 and 2024 are also very different. This election is much more similar to the 2020 election. Kamala keep saying "we're the underdog" because most people look at Trump as the incumbent, not the challenger.

I read a comment the other day that really says everything. “When people vote for a man he only has to be good enough…they only have to agree with him on some things…not all. But if the candidate is a woman? They have to agree 100% on all topics… and even on topics having nothing to do with politics. Also she needs to be perfect in every other way, too. She had to be strong and assertive, but not seem aggressive. She had to be intelligent and well educated, but not make anyone feel inferior by comparison. She had to be attractive, but not too attractive. She had to dress well, but not be too well dressed. She had to be confident, but not too confident. Basically, any candidate who was a woman was held to a standard that was impossible to achieve, and the goalposts constantly shifted.” Sadly this still applies. VP Harris is so qualified it’s insane that there’s even a choice. Jasmine Crockett said it best yesterday: Crockett: “This election is the best example of why you all are so afraid of diversity, equity, and inclusion because then you can't have a simple minded under qualified white man somehow end up ascending…instead you have to pay attention to the qualified Black woman.”

So i keep hearing some people referring back to 2016 (Trump of course won and Hillary lost). Few key circumstances that were prevalent in 2016 (which was 8 years ago) but are no longer a factor : 1. As others have mentioned, Hilary was generally seen as a very unpopular candidate (she was seen by too many people as being too apart of the establishment). So she was qualified, but she wasn't popular. 2, she ran a horrible campaign. She famously never visited some of the swing states. I think she never went to WI or MI. 3, the comey report came out like in late October of that election and was basically a nuclear missile at her. 4, and IMO this is perhaps the most significant difference between 2016 and 2024....Trump was much more popular back in 2016 because he was brand new. He had never been in politics. He was seen by many as being "different and an outsider". People overwhelmingly gravitated towards him. People were willing to take a chance on an "outsider" because they were fed up with Hilary. Again i can't stress enough how unpopular Hilary Clinton was in 2016 NONE of the above factors, or variables, exist in this election. Trump is not a "new shiny toy or an unknown". Hillary Clinton isn't the democratic candidate. And there will be no comey report and there is no "secret Trump vote' this election

While these specific issues weren't present in 2016, Kamala has other issues like: 1) Not being elected as the DNC candidate, meaning we don't really know how popular she will be 2) While she regularly touts how great 'Bidenomics' is going as far to say it's one of her greatest VP achievements in helping work towards, most Americans don't feel happy with the economy. 3) Poor record on immigration (Even if you don't believe the Border Czar thing). She has said alot of things on immigration in 2020 that are extremely unpopular today, so much so that she's changed her immigration policy. Also, in regards to your last point, Trump wasn't more popular in 2016. He got 12 million more votes in 2020 than he did when he was 'new' so his popularity has actually grown over time.

One of the main things was that while Hillary demonstrated competency, she did not demonstrate resilience against Donald Trump or resilience against the people that doubted her. Kamala has been consistently demonstrating her competence AND her resilience. She basically made a fool of DJT during the debate, exploited his weak-minded narcissistic obsessions and she’s been pulling in support from unlikely people by being persistent in her messaging. Focusing on meeting voters where they are but also being careful not to be a pushover to the media.

To me, Hillary Clinton seemed like she was trying to represent women and women only. I felt a little excluded from her campaign. With Kamala Harris I see her supporting women, but I see her supporting so many different groups of people. And I'll admit I like Tim Walz more because a lot of his background is similar to mine (national guard, GIS/geography, midwest born and raised, etc). But I think Kamala isn't trying to lift just women up. She's trying to lift everyone up. And to me, that's important. I don't want anyone to get left behind and I don't think we have to do that in the first place. I'll vote Harris/Walz because they represent my values and beliefs. They're just normal people.

From 2016 I recall an episode of the Daily Show where Jon Stewart commented on 'Approval Polls' and how both Clinton and Trump had the 1st and 2nd worst approval of any 2 presidential candidates in history and he quipped "Each of them are literally the only person who could lose to the other one"....Clinton didn't lose because she was a woman...she lost because she was Clinton: disingenuous, entitled, and out of touch. None of those qualities apply to Harris.

I'm not American, but you know, the last few US presidential elections - the candidates in them are just...awful (The election system - the way it's set up - is terrible, too). The populism is pure from both parties. Trump at least offers his reasons for the bad state of affairs in the country, but Harris is “for all good and against all bad” + "+ I'm a woman and we women are strong and they don't trust us because we're women" and...that's it. Oh, and the smile - she's forever repeating her phrase and smiling like she's being asked to say “cheese”. What has she done in her years in power? And yes, Hillary has built her entire career and her campaign for election on being a “poor president's wife and woman”

Mike Johnson is completely wrong. This is not election primarily about policy. It's another referendum on Trump and Trumpism. Biden was boring but sane uncontroversial politician who barely trounced Tump last time. Even though Trump had fervent support enough people said "no". Apathetically or with conviction? doesn't matter it's still 1 vote for 1 person. With Biden's health breaking down, some of the people who are against Trump had a problem voting for a man that can't do the job, Kamala obviously remedied that by simply being a competent Democrat politician. Even if she was unpopular radical that had no chance in previous primary that's small potatoes, she's not Trump and there are no deal breakers with her ticket that could scare off any of the Not Trump crowd away from her. Maybe a few independents may be swayed on immigration or abortion... but for them to matter Trump or Not Trump has to get pretty close to even.

I’m just going to say it . That analyst saying it is surprising that Hillary couldn’t galvanize woman because of “ the history poised to be made “ is exactly the problem . Also I would argue ( I won’t say one out weighs the other I don’t know that ) but frankly there are plenty of people voting for Kamala and whom voted for Hillary that voted for them atleast in part BECAUSE they are women and not in spite of it . These gender war pieces just seem so divisive to me I mean it’s always woman v man , left v right , dog v cat and black v white it is tiring and depressing to imagine people really live their life viewing everything this way .
