Toyota, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world started out their innings in India with a well engineered product- the Qualis. This was followed up by the blockbuster Innova, and the invincible Fortuner. But other than these two utility vehicles, they have completely lost track of every other segment they have tried, with the Corolla, Etios and Liva being discontinued.
Although they were deep into diesels, up till 2016, Toyota didn’t have a diesel engine plant in India. The Innova and Fortuner D4D engines were imported from Thailand while the 1.4 diesel for the Etios and Altis were imported from Japan.
The brand now exists in the small segment with rebranded Maruti products as the Urban Cruiser and the Glanza. We talk about what happened to Toyota, how they ended up in this state and the probable way forward.
