I've driven for 60 years, and just assumed it was to the approximate center of a city. Can't remember the subject coming up...close was good enough.

I always knew this to mean the distance runs from the core of the city, town, village and whatnot. It is almost universal.

There was one on the 403 from Brantford to Burlington where at one point a sign posted Burlington 23 km, at least a kilometer down the road towards Burlington was another sign Burlington 24 km.

The milage on the highway. So exit 234, but the highway is 500km long. So the exit is 234 kms into the highway.

Though I've long forgotten where I learned that, I knew it decades ago, when I was a kid. Also, as far as borders go, many towns and cities are much larger than they used to be. For example Whitby used to be a small town and Toronto was originally a small fraction of it's current size.

I believe in B.C. for small communities it is to the Post Office. As many post offices have been closed over the years it still goes to either where the PO originally was or the centre of the community.

Never thought about it. I know where the address is I am going to so city hall and those signs are irrelevant. Also distance doesn't equal time especially at certain times. I've driven all over the USA with a paper map. As a male living near Toronto, I tend to use what most real men use to aid in their day to day navigation...the force.

Huh. Never knew that's how Canada did that. Here in the US, it's typically to the heart of a downtown, unless you're out in the countryside, then it's usually to the edge of the city boundary, instead, since the town would be very small and rural rather than a proper "city".

That's Ontario. Other provinces, states, etc. may have their own definitions. 95% of people are not going anywhere close to city hall when going to Taranana.
