Good call with the Garmin on the waist/fanny pack! Spoke with an AT Thru hiker who was having an allergic reaction of some sort. He took his pack off, passed out, and then rolled down an embankment. When he (fortunately)came to, he had to crawl back up the embankment to use the SOS. He was rescued, took a nearo at the hospital, and was back on the trail the next day. COMPLETELY lived up to his trail name: Smooth.

Holy cow! I'm glad he's okay! That would inevitably be when you need it- when you're away from camp, your pack, etc.

I'd like to learn more about your tracking device. Have you tried different kinds?

I used a Spot device years ago, but I chose the Garmin inReach because I can communicate with my wife while I'm in the backcountry, in addition to having the SOS feature. It's really nice to be able to notify her that I'm safe or if plans change (and they often do!). I originally got the inReach Explorer+, but found I didn't use the features that set it apart from the Mini, so I downsized and am glad I did.
