i well choose a EM5iii, that thing is cheap, really pretty, tiny and pack a lot of punch for the size, you can even do wildlife with it, get it and a 75-300, then you can have a wildlife setup that you can put in your briefcase, how awesome is that

It’s a lovely camera. My son-in-law has just returned with mine from an arctic cruise, equipped mostly with the 14-140 lens for a ten times zoom for catching the whales etc. It’s usually fitted with a 12-32 kit lens which is compact and sharp. My daughter tells me that he took nearly 10,000 photos which will give him hours of fun editing and culling. Not sure what SD card I sent with him but suspect a 128GB micro SD with SD adapter…. but maybe not… I have a few. The GX80 is by far my most used camera of eight others, which include the iPhone, a Sony A7III, Lumix G9 and various others. As far as sexy cameras go, my Olympus E-M10 MkII is up there along with the Leica D-Lux7.

Affinity photo is pretty nice. The only thing missing is AI denoise, but that can be done with Topaz. Costs more upfront, but is a lifetime license, but updates only come for twelve months. Still, it works really well and in the long run is cheaper. Affinity has a six month try out period currently and Topaz has a 30 day trial if I remember correctly. So you can try it without risk.

@@analogue_cassette That's what i do in the fujifilm cameras, in-camera editing. Mostly cropping or changing a colour picture to b&w with the film simulations. Occasionally i'll use Snapseed (which is free) for straightening or adjusting the perspective, but other than that, i don't use editing software to enhance my photos. Anyone can make a bad photo look amazing in photoshop, lightroom, or similar editing software. I find these days that too many photos online look animated, or over-enhanced.

I picked up a Panasonic GX7 with 12-32mm lens, 2 batteries and a third party charger in the Oxfam charity shop in Keswick, whole I was on holiday. In my local charity shop I purchased a Meike 50mm f1.8 lens for £35, it is super quality. I own 3 other Micro four thirds cameras, including an OM1, all purchased used and like new for much less than £1,600. I own 10 micro four thirds lenses, all but two purchased used. I love the GX7 coupled with the Olympus 17mm lens. It is my carry anywhere camera and it produces very pleasing images. It was the best bargain, camera wise, I have found. For the money, the a6700 is an excellent buy. Paired with one of the many excellent third-party e-mount primes or a Sigma 10-18 or 18-50, it's really all the camera I need. Sure, it's not "underrated" and the IBIS could be better, but it's an excellent choice for everyday photography, street photography etc. It's also a decent choice for someone starting out with wildlife or sports photography.

I also rock the gx85 with 20mm f1.7. Aside from the slow autofocus, it's a banging camera setup. Using this combo for the past 1.5 months also has me rethinking my whole setup. I too was trying for the one camera to do it all and bought the S5 and some lenses. At the end of the day, I never brought it with me for personal photos/videos. For work, my pair of Nikon D750s do great for wedding photos (and am already invested in the primes, 24-70 & 70-200 lenses), and my GH5/GH5s cameras do great for wedding video (Nikon adapted and also invested heavily in M43 lenses). I'll probably sell my S5 and L-mount lenses and put the money back in the bank for refreshing/upgrading my aging GH5/GH5s bodies.

You can certainly get more versatility for the same money, especially in 4/3, but the appeal of the X100 is not so much the image quality as that it forces you to make the most of what you've got rather than thinking about what equipment to use, it's got loads of proper controls with dials and switches, and it has that viewfinder. It's the closest thing I've had to going out with an M Leica and one lens, in the old days of film (only it's better). So I'm with the group that says that an alternative that needs considering is an older X100 -- maybe with the little DJI video camera.

I really am getting itchy fingers for a small camera in situations I don't feel happy about, or safe to be, with my bigger cameras. And the thought of being able to use my plethora of lenses makes it all the more appealing. And this is where I'd shy away from the S9, not because I need a pitchfork to go with my soapbox, but because I've invested a shed load of pennies into MFT. As for a monopod, I'm liking mine more and more for fast moving filming situations where I don't want or can't bring a Gimbal or tripod. It's great for locked off shots and adds stability, of sorts, when used as a counterweight for moving shots. Your sponsored monopod looks sexy with it's ease of use.😀

Add amazing image quality, impressive IBIS, quick performance, great menus - and you forget about the Fuji for good!

Great video. I did go with an S9 with the Sigma 45 and 24mm but in the end couldn't cope with no shutter sound and no viewfinder, I'm an old film guy. This is interesting because I love my X-M1, with no view finder. I think it comes down to size and weight, I can live without a viewfinder if the camera is small and light, but not if I have 8-900g in my hand at arms length.

Plus two Olympus bargains for about the same cost. I own M43 and the Nikon ZF which btw is 100 more expensive than the Fuji. Actually, there are lightly used or open box versions you can get for the same price! With Nikon, you’re getting full frame plus a plethora of vintage glass with a rich history of some incredible light gathering capabilities! The only reason I own, the other cameras is because they are significantly lighter weight. Between these two systems, I am completely set. Need nothing more. ❤

I want a Pen-F... But, the GX80 chapter is the most compelling argument pro-m43 I think anyone can make in 2024. A FULL KUT, fully featured, with very good 4K video, excellent 16mp stills, for less than the cost of a hyped APS-C or a very cheap full frame body w/o lens! Pretty much a professional kit for a complete bargain.

Some great suggestions here Emily! I just bought an E-P7. OMDS have them discounted to £599 currently inclusive of the 14-42 pancake lens (not that I’ve used it as have a handful of primes). I couldn’t really justify £900 for a Pen-F body only. One other thing to mention if we’re on an alternative to Fuji topic is regardless of what you buy, spend £129 of what you save on DXO Film Pack if you’re really wedded to the film simulations.

One camera, one fixed lens at one focal length is limiting, is sometimes challenging and is brilliant! Having too many options is sometimes the main reason we don't go out and take photos. I don't have the x100 but I do have the Coolpix A 18.5mm APS-c (28 equivalent FF) and since I've bought it I can say I take way more photos and think about my composition a lot more than before. I've sort of done this too. When the X100v was released there were quite a few used X100f's available used so I bought one. Although there was nothing wrong with it, it was not for me so I sold it and 'replaced' it with two cameras I already owned. The combination works fine as a travel camera. I later adapted my Nikon lenses on X-T20 via an AF adaptor which add more verstility. Still using it on daily basis. I have also tried X-A10 with TTArtisan 27f2.8 as a smaller alternative. Love the lens. It's small and decent made lens with aperture ring. But I'm not a fan for slow AF and laggy UI of the X-A10. Sold together after a full month of trying hard to love it for almost the same price I paid for. E-PL7 and Olympus 17f1.8 also works fine as a smaller and cheaper alternative. IQ lags behind X-A10, but AF is far better.

This channel is convincing me to go 4/3. My old Nikon has died, I want light weight and I have almost no budget at this time. Have you any opinion of the Lumix G5 with the kit lens or have you done a video on it. I can't see one. Really enjoying this catching up with MFN.

I just got my LUMIX GX8 and I love it so far. It’s gorgeous, I got it used on EBay. I have the LUMIX G 14-42 mm HD on it now, but I have other m4/3 lenses to try out from my other LUMIX and Olympus cameras. I had a hard time choosing between the GX8, GX85 or the GX9. But after watching several videos I chose the GX8. You did tempt me with the S9 was it? The full frame camera, that looked cool, but I already have the m4/3 lenses, I’m good. Next purchase will probably be the G9 MII or OM System 1 MII. Choosing between them is tough too!

A Most Likeable Camera contest, and as such very enjoyable. On that score, I'd choose the LX100 II or the Pen-F. I got the Canon R50 to extend the big 70-200/2.8 II out to 320mm, and I love the pictures. It's likeable because it's tiny and does extremely well at IQ, eye tracking, and cuteness. That said, humpless cameras automatically get 100 likeableness bonus points.

I got an OM-1 with the 12-40 F2.8 Pro for $1600 - refurb - from Amazon a month before the OM-1 MKii came out. Gotta love that. I have a Lumix GX9 too, nice setup with the 20mm 1.7 getting crazy pricey though. G9s are not tiny, but a lot of bang for the ...pound...or euro, or buck for both stills and video.

I LOVE my GX8 - I recently bough a fujifilm X100V and have been really enjoying that as well. I woud love a 40 mp sensor but its's certaiinly not necessary. Better gear makes you more technically proficient (usually lol) but it doesnt make you a better photographer.. esp is ur doing it creatively.

I think X-T30 or X-E3 with an XF23mm f2 lens are decent options too. Fuji also has quite a few other small primes to choose from. Personally I'm using an X-E3 paired with an XF35mm f1.4; it looks quite sexy with square hood and takes decent picture too. Price is not that good for a 7 year-old camera and the autofocus is rather slow, however.

Once experimented with the Fuji X100S...but the autofocus was far below par and I missed the possibility of an interchangeable lens. The lumix gx80 and the Lumix GX9 also tried. Actually I was looking for a camera for street photography and now I use the Olympus Pen F in combination with the Leica-Lumix 15mm 1.7 lens. I always buy second hand and have good experiences with it. Not least because it is pleasant for the wallet. In the meantime a large collection of micro four thirds lenses. For the other photography purposes I use the Lumix G9.

Waiting for Godot...or the upgraded GX8 with the inner working of the G9ii with Lumix lab thrown in!😅 Until then, I just grabbed a weatherproof Lumix G85 (Excellent from mpb) for $340 to use with a set of primes (3.5, 7.5, 14, 20, 42.5mm). As always, a thoughtful review, Emily!👍

This video gives me a lot of perspective on my dilemma about spending the money on an Olympus 300 f4 lens. I can get that used for the price of an X100VI. I'm getting that lens- I have the camera already.

Olympus E-P series of cameras and the Pen F are the most gorgeous ones not only body but the pictures too, there some pretty good jpeg recipes too for these out there. Also the Fujifilm X-T50 is same sensor as the X100VI but for WAY LESS money.

When my OM D E mk 2 started to give me trouble I picked up a Lumix G85 and have probably used that more than OM-D E since. The G85 is so much cheaper than Pen second hand.

Great video, but for the silly S9 part - boo!! hiss!! You had a good selection of alternatives in bodies and lenses but, the amazing thing - as most MFT people know - is that you could have made this video twice as long by adding some of the Olympus PEN series cameras and several other excellent and compact lenses. One note - the PEN F - at least int the good old US of A is now running above $1,300 in excellent condition from MPB. I think it's been "discovered" but those looking for a Fuji X100 alternative. Again, great video but for the S9 which is a silly, silly stills camera. 🙂

Well dangit! I just came back from safari myself (and I can't stop talking about it either), and my monopod was a game changer, BUT the one thing I wanted was some kind of quick release ability to adjust height really fast. I already use a Slik trigger grip head which allows for fast camera repositioning, but this things looks coooool. I was seriously considering going down the path of product development, but they beat me to it!

Pretty sure you could get a GX80 and the 9mm, 15mm and 25mm lenses from PanaLeica if you shopped around. I don’t usually need long lenses so 25mm is long enough for me. Really don’t know why Leica haven’t made a 4/3s body. They have all the lenses ready for it.

I've got an old Fuji X20, for me it's perfect, 28-112 lens, f2.0-2.8 lens, compact, only 12mp but the jpegs are better than any m43 camera I've owned, pity Fuji didn't update it....

Just shy of £600 (luckily I paid £475 for mine when they came out new) will buy you an XF10, which will do everything the X100VI will do except for IBIS, but it is smaller and truly pocketable. Then get yourself an Olympus 35 RC and a small manual flash, a few filters and a shed load of film and you will still be in pocket.

Loved the video, thank you. I'm starting out in photography, bit late at 58, but hey ho!! I love the idea of the Fuji film sims and recipes and keep reading great things about the X-S10 ( I'm currently using a Nikon D3100) and an easy transition with IBIS and loads of lens choices, would you advise this as a good choice or better looking elsewhere? Thanks, subscribed and signed up to the newsletter from the website too, thanks
