I almost only use ISO 100 film on account of how bright and cloudless it is where I live, and I first got my 1.4 lens to allow me to be more flexible if I ever need to shoot indoors or in really deep shadow. I think it's truly shined ever since I started doing slides, because they only still make reversal film in 50 or 100 ISO, and having that really wide aperture has allowed me to shoot indoors, near sunset, and to do handheld night photography when I otherwise couldn't use a tripod. Sometimes that still means shooting at 1/15th of a second even at f/1.4, but when it comes to capturing a memory, the difference between not being able to take the picture at all and taking a slightly soft one means all the difference in the world.

I have a Canon 5d(2) I use my Canon 50mm 1.4 in low light and with the 5d(2) being full frame, the results can be stunning. Sharp great colour. I also have a 7d(2) and when I use it on that the results can be just as good with a little noise reduction. I have a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 50mm 1.4 and considering its an APSC sensor the results, again, are fabulous. I have a Fuji XT-1 and with a converter use a Pentax 50mm 1.7 and it is an excellent combo. Love your videos, never miss one. 🙂

Nice. I'm looking forward to more shoots with this lens. Such as the recent video that you did with the streetlights shining on the cobblestones, a flower garden after a summer shower, the possibilities are endless. Yes, I have some 1.4s, mostly in Canon FD. Like any thing else, they have their place and can make wonderful photos when used accordingly. (I don't have any problems with equipment, it's the idiot holding the camera that causes trouble.)

Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 lens is a superb lens within apertures from f/4-f/11, excellent at f/16 due to diffraction. At f/1.4 and f/2.0 the centre is very good, but other area’s of the lens at this aperture is not very good. At f/2.8 the centre is superb with very good in all other area’s of the lens. Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 is much better at f/1.4 and f/2.0, but much more expensive. Nikon does not have a better 50mm f/1.4 lens then the Zeiss Milvus or Otus lenses, except if you photograph f/2.8 or higher, then the Nikon Micro 55mm f/2.8 is a excellent/superb lens even wide open at f/2.8.

In NZ we have stinging nettles which are capable of killing people. But we almost never come across them. Stinging nettle is really rare to encounter. Yet Europe's waterways are covered in them, preventing access. It seems to me that waterways just are not managed very well over there.

I do shoot 1.4 quite often, but on a much older lens: a Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 Although I can't do distant shots wide open on that unless I want the edges to swirl. Great lens overall though. I use the lens wide open to take shots of flowers, grasses and trees etc with nice bokeh. I tend to avoid skies when shooting open.

BEST one is my Asahi Pentax SMC 50mm f1,4 Takumar -- I also have a Zeiss PLANAR T* 50mm f1.4 on my CONTAX RTS II Quartz ALMOST as GOOD as the SMC Takumar. CANON SSC 50mm f1.4, and a 'Auto-Reflex 55mm f1.4 ' on my CHINONTTL 'Prinzflex' I had Given to me -- sharp ! OLYMPUS G-Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f1.4 is also SHARP ! I used to shoot wide open all the time, fasinated by the creamy background blur and cinemtic feel, I bought many prime lenses with large aperture, the most expensive and crazy buy was the Noctilux F1. At first it was all wow and cheers, but after awhile it quickly turned into a constrain, photos became perdictable, no fun anymore. Nowadays I normally mount a 28mm shoot at f8 to f16, pettty faces with blurred out background became the last thing I want to shoot.

Nice. I found shooting at f1.4 on film always too much of a hit and miss. But since I also own an F6 and a Nikon 50mm 1.4 G I should try it again. Unfortunately most Nikon 50mm lenses don't have a nice bokeh. The lens with the imho greatest bokeh of a 50ish Nikon F lens is the Nikon 58mm 1.4 AF-S G.

Excellent video. Manual focusing at f/1.4 with the F4/F5/F6 is barely impossible with the standard focusing screen, at least for me. I would go for an older model with the standard "K" focusing screen, which is much handier and faster than focus peeking with the dots in the finder. For the F6 I would go for an AF lens, if you need the f/1.4.

I have a trio of F1.4 Sigma Art lenses for canon. I use these on DSLRs as well as my EOS 3 & 50 film bodies. My first was the 35mm and it was interesting since I’d never experienced any real depth of field to play with creatively at what is a relatively wide angle. The addition of the 50 and 85 mm lenses gives a good range of options and I now primarily shoot primes. Being able to pick out a single subject such as a face amongst many can turn an other wise messy and distracting composition into something more pleasing and focused with those potentially distracting elements actually falling away into softness where they frame the main subject and provide context. You may want to try a technique where you photograph a well known landmark, such as the Isle of Wight Needles, but focusing on some foreground element while wide open. This will though the landmark out of focus in the background but not too much that it is not immediately recognisable. It can be an interesting look but, like fisheye, one to not over use. While not as international as the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building us Brits will see it right away. I highly recommend Kase magnetic filters. I have a set that includes a 3 stop that enables me to shoot wide open in bright sun. If I’m really pushing it using HP5 at 1600 ISO (where it looks best) I might need the 6 stop for F1.4
