Although I don’t set New Year resolutions anymore I find the new year a great opportunity to reflect on what’s been and what is yet to come. There are some things I’d like to continue working on or start working on as a result of learning more about myself, and then there are some things I would like to let go of, or stop trying.
Learning new things gives us the opportunity to reset or refocus to make sure we’re on the path we’ve chosen. And on a path that makes us happy. One that we choose for ourselves, that brings us happiness.
This year I’m practicing effective communication and interpersonal skills such as communicating my needs and setting healthy boundaries. I’ve learnt a lot about this from DBT, a more modern version of CBT, but that I much prefer. DBT offers practical tips that are especially useful if you want to change your behaviour and improve your interactions with the world. It’s also especially beneficial for people with autism since it gives us practical tools in how to successfully cope in a world not always suited for us!
I’m also working on my financial stability. My dream is not to become a billionaire, but to achieve a financial stability that is enough for me and my family. Enough to live calmly, with less stress, and always - less consumerism.
I’m working on being present and mindful in my life, spending less time in front of screens and more times with my friends. Maybe even making some new friends this year! I’m also reminding myself of the importance to follow our dreams and honour the child within.
The more practical things I’m working on is figuring out how to take care of myself whilst being in a relationships, and regulating my emotions and trauma with the help of nervous system regulation practices such as breath work, meditation, touch and movement.
The things I’m letting go of are things like friendships that’ve come to an end, material desires (I do this one every year, it’s a good reminder), unkind family members and the feeling of not being my true authentic self at work.
I don’t know if you feel the same way, but I really struggle with letting my personality exist (!) when I’m in a professional setting. Even though I’m a freelancer and work from home, I have found it difficult to express my true self in conversations with other employees or bosses, so that’s something I’m really excited to work on this year - especially thanks to the practical tips from DBT.
Here are all the resources I’ve been using, and will continue to use, because I find them so darn good!
