Six Crimson Cranes sounds like it is definitely based on the Six Swans -a German fairy tale. One of my favorite books is Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, which is an adult book and is also based on this fairy tale (and is a series but they are honestly all pretty stand alone). Its a wonderful story that is beautifully told; maybe give it a shot if you're interested in a more adult version.

I always love to watch these videos although I don't know most of the books. If you're interested in what I read in November, here's my list 😊 • Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan (it's so amazing and important! I cried so often. Honestly everyone needs to read it), • the girl and the ghost by Hanna Alkaf (it's so cute. One of my favorites), • Eragon 2 by Christopher Paolini, • selection 2 by Kiera Cass (tbh these books are the worst I've ever read but maybe I'm just too old for it) • Howl's moving castle by Diana Wynne Jones, • von verlassenen Träumen & einem leichteren Morgen by Clara Louise (it's German), • Lichtauge by Roland Kübler (again, German) For me it's pretty much because I'm a slow reader (Audible is my life-saver). I guess I'll only read 3 books this month.

i really appreciate your perspective on the grace year! i also listened to it as an audiobook and really lost interest in the second half and couldn't quite figure out why...but it was definitely the romance! it feels quite clunky and awkward, and almost detracts from tierney's growth and personal empowerment. the book had so much potential and i was so excited to read it, but i walked away from it feeling like it fell flat. i feel very validated by your review :)

Hey, looks like we both read « Rebecca » last month 😊 I had a lot of difficulties to get into the book as I felt it was pretty slow for the first half of the story. I felt sorry for the main character as I was often under the impression she was constantly putting up with her own life and marriage. BUT the second half was really great and I have to say the author got me with the final revelations.

ooh - Six Crimson Cranes sounds like a fairy tale retelling - thanks for the recommendation. Rebecca is such a Gothic Novel but it's very bleak - I appreciate it but can't say I enjoy reading it. Ooh nice, definitely adding some of these to my TBR! Also want to take a moment to advertise for my favourite book! It's called 'Challenger Deep' and it's by Neal Shusterman. It's a story about a teenage boy with psychosis. I can vouch that it portrays psychosis well as I have schizophrenia myself! It really accurately portrays psychosis in my opinion, but does it in a way that's really fascinating to read. The story is done in 2 worlds, one being the real world, and the other being the world of the character's delusions, before tying them together. It's not a long book, but it's really beautiful IMO! Check the trigger warnings first though! Only read if you're in an okay frame of mind. Definitely worth it though for me. Arohanui!

I loved the movie Hidden Figures and MRK's previous work Shades of Milk and Honey, so I thought The Calculating Stars would be a slam dunk, but I ended up giving it 4 stars. The author seemed to be working on debunking some writing tropes - that protagonists (particularly female ones) have to be likeable and "put up with" a husband's advances, the representation of POC, etc. - and while I can applaud that, it should be less obvious. I should be wrapped up in the story. So, it was fun but a bit stilted. Personally, one of my favorite parts was her atypical relationship with her husband, but obviously tastes differ. Oh, and I really liked the twist on the John Glen type story with the person who you think is obviously __ but the real situation is something else entirely. I've read the second book (it was ok) and am now motivated to try the third if that other commenter is right. By the way, how does one follow you on Goodreads? I was on the app but could not figure out how to search for a reader. I guess I'll have to try on a computer?

I’d say Jamaica Inn. It’s the next most well-known/acclaimed and comes with a travel excuse (Jamaica Inn in Cornwall ... also the area of England where Manderley is meant to be located). Then My Cousin Rachel. But Du Maurier was quite prolific, so if you like her writing style there is a long list to choose from! Also, if you haven’t watched it, I highly highly recommend the old Hitchcock B&W “original” adaptation of Rebecca in 1940. It won Best Picture at the Oscars in 1941. It’s fabulous. The 2020 remake is ok actually, but the 1940 film is the gold standard! Enjoy!!
