The way I cut down on impulsive online shopping is I put whatever I want in my cart and then I just let it sit for a week or a couple of days at least and if I’m still excited about it when I come back to it, then I buy it. Sometimes I don’t actually want the thing, I just want the little high of shopping.

My budget line item for my dog is about the same, so no, you're not delusional :) I budget about $170 a month for my Labrador. His food is around $80 (I buy the big bag) and his meds for his chronic skin issues are around $75 a month. For the months when he needs a bath, I have to budget more than $170. Yes, pets are expensive but we love them and want the best life for them. I think it's worth the money.

I have an almost 8 yr old Shih tzu. Food is about $120/month, he gets groomed once every two months at $60 with tip, he has an eye condition that requires drops and medicine $65/month, $10/month on treats, and I put away about $40/month to save for annual vet visits (I do cash envelopes as well). So that adds up to about $270/month

Thank you for being real, open, and honest about such a divisive and personal subject as personal finance. I'm glad to hear JS is doing so much better, too! I had a similar minor setback with my relationship with money this past month, though for different reasons. We went on vacation, so the natural inclination was to treat yourself, splurge, and SO much FOMO spending. If I had a chance to do it over, I would have bought less/spent less, but what's done is done and I'll just use the experience as a learning moment. Your thoughts on having cash envelopes versus using debit/credit cards mirror my own experiences, and I'm determined to remember to bring along my cash envelopes from here on. Last month is now in the past, and now we have a new month ahead of us! (And autumn, yay!) Thanks again for another great video!

Zoe, I have to suggestions for helping set up a realistic budget. 1) financial calendar that displays all the events that will require spending money (bills, parties, annual subscriptions,etc) 2) budgets by paycheck or bi weekly, instead of for the whole month. So you would set a budgets for two weeks it’s sometimes easier to know realistically what the next two weeks will bring you

There are months when I don't spend anything for my dog because I get bigger bags of food for her. But if I need to buy her food, go to the vet and the dog groomer I might spend approximately 120€. Let's keep in mind that she is a small dog & I live in Greece though, the cost of living is different here as well as the salaries etc 😅

Love your vlogs and money videos Zoe! Wanted to answer your question regarding dog expenses ... I have a senior labrador retriever who has arthritis and signs of DM ... between his Vet food, Medications, Muscle formula and bi-weekly accupuncture and therapy appointments I pay almost $1000 a month and this does not include any Vet visits. I would say when he was younger & healthy I was paying around $300 a month (he is a bigger 120 lb dog so his Food was always more pricey). A lot of pet owners don't factor in the cost as their pets age ... I would like to add that the therapy is defenitely helping him walk and live a nice quality life still ;)

I spend $500 a month on 2 horses, 1 goat, 8 chickens, 4 ducks, 3 cats, and 1 dog. (In California - which is pretty expensive compared to other states) $300 hay $70 dog food $30 cat food $20 flock feed Remainder is left for misc animal expenses. My #1 tip for dog food is look @ the #1 ingredient. If it’s not chicken, salmon, beef, etc… it’s probably not the best for your fur bb.

Once you find the right food for Maggie, if you have the option, some pet stores (mainly online) have discount subscription for whatever product. Also get her bones from the butcher they sometimes sell bones for dogs, it's cheaper also my vet recommended it, carrots are also good. Thank you so much for sharing this Zoe, the transparency is so appreciated! I have a dog with separation anxiety as well and I so relate to what you were saying about trying to underplay how much she was costing me. But after tracking my spending and budgeting carefully for the last year, I've realized that she regularly costs me about $500 a month. I'm sure some people think that's crazy, but her anxiety meds alone cost $100 a month and I'm in the same boat as you that I need a dog sitter every time I leave the house 😅$500 is really just her meds, food, pet insurance, and getting a dog sitter a couple times a month. I think most people grossly underestimate how much their pets cost, it's easy to just think about day-to-day stuff like food, but if you actually count everything - flea & tick prevention, daycare/walks, vet visits, accessories, treats, toys, etc etc - it adds up real fast! I think you're doing amazing with Maggie's costs! 💖

I know this is a pretty late comment (still catching up on your videos haha) but I had an idea on the Maggie spendings category. What if everytime you're under your budget, you add the amount that is left up to the following month's budget? Like, if you budget 180 dollars this month but only spend 150, you could add the leftover 30 to next month and have the budget be at 210 without actually having increased the "standard" budget. If you're under-spending, the budget is gonna accumulate to catch any unforseen bigger spendings. Just an idea :) hope you're having a good October weekend and lots of love to you, JS, and Maggie! 💗

I have 2 Shiba Inu dogs (small/medium) and I live in Laval, Qc. In the last 12 months, they cost me 10,100$. This includes food, treats, toys, accessories, pension, regular vet bills, 1 emergency vet bill and 1 surgery. W/o the surgery it ends up being only 4,5K$ so around 375$/month for 2 dogs. We do purchase excellent quality dog food in bulk to save money. I calculated recently they cost me 20K$ in the past 3 years 😂 It is expensive to own dogs...

I’m like you and have budgeted for many years, what i learned this year (also my debt free year, yay) is that i am adding in a section of my budget called flex funds. This is going to be for those months that i “should have budgeted better” but didn’t. This year it would be my August month that just got a lil wild. I don’t feel bad and I’m just about done recouping. But also it’s ok and i know if i just add in that lil section of the budget for those occasional times, it’s going to make me feel like I don’t need to justify it (and you don’t either!)

I recommend the menstrual disc. I used a cup for years & all of a sudden they stopped working for me. The disc has been great so far, no more leaks & so easy to insert. I haven't used tampons since 2013 & there's no way I could go back. I use the flex disc reusable disc. They also make a disposable disc but they don't fit the same. Also I have 2 German Shepherds and probably spend about $350/month/dog (food, basic health care, doggie day car (1dog 1 time per week), grooming and treats). If you have Costco in Canada the membership is worth it just to buy dog food. It's great quality & $1/lb. I was paying $4/lb for equivalent quality food.

I spend quite a lot on my two cats every month. People are often surprised. But I’m happy spending it. we feed them raw food ( which I will never change) so that is premium. It’s about 6$ a day for the raw food for both of them. Plus high quality litter, the occasional treat bag, etc. I’d say it probably costs us 200-250$ a month for both cats. No shame in the game lol ❤
@Stephanie-ki5oz

My dog (an angel on earth) is pretty cheap (she is ~45 lbs and I spend about $100/month, $50 for pet insurance and $100 for food every other month) but the way I keep it low is using regular food for treats (PB, plain Greek yogurt, etc.), brushing her teeth and cutting her nails, and having friends watch her when I have to go out of town. I watch my friends dogs as well so we don’t pay each other. Pet insurance is more expensive now as she is young and relatively healthy, but my last dog had preexisting conditions and vet bills cost an insane amount so I don’t mind it. Dogs are worth every penny 💙

I wish I spent $268 a month only on my dogs! I have 2 a frenchie and a beagle and I get them the big bag of science diet food per the vets rec for sensitive skin and that alone is over $110 but luckily lasts at least a month. Boarding ranges between $200-$300 a month because they have the cameras that I can watch them on while im away on a trip. My frenchie gets a allergy shot every couple months we have to budget in as well which is $113 alone.
