Thanks! And so funny because that last book was sitting on my bedside table for SO long I had forgotten it was the last book of the series. Then when I recalled that , while reading it again, i was SO excited!!

If you like the Barsetshire people, Angela Thirkell continued the series in 1933. She takes the descendants of Crawleys, Thornes and others in Barsetshire in a delightful and witty interplays of manners in rural England. Try the Brandons, The Headmistress, and Northbridge Rectory to get a feel for them. There are 29 in the series, which are best when read in order as old characters and new are often intertwined and older happenings are referenced. I love them.

I've read all of Brookner, most of them soon after they were released. Her writing is so good, but the themes are generally similar in all her books. "Dolly" is the American title; it was originally released as "A Family Romance." I so enjoyed Trollope's character study of Rev. Josiah Crawley, even if he is frustrating. The whole book is worth the scene between Dr Grantley and Grace near the end (IMHO). The Pallisers are more political books, but they're also a portrait of the marriage of Plantagenet and Lady Glencora over many years, as they have story lines in all 6 books--some books more than others. Make a note that when you get to "The Duke's Children" (the last book) to be sure your edition is a "restored" text from 2016 or later. Trollope originally had to cut 25% of the book for his publisher. In a special 2016 edition all the cuts were restored; most editions after that date have the full text, and it makes such a difference in the full development of the characters.

Good to see you starting into Hesse! Big fan of his books. I've read nearly all of them, and I'd say they're pretty consistent. If you like Gertrude, you can't really go wrong with any of the others. I find his prose style to be lucid, wise, and accessible.

It's been decades since I've read Hesse but I'd like to pick him up again. The eastern way of thinking/being has resonated with me from a young age, so I think that may be why his books meant so much to me. I have not read Gertrude. I did really treasure Siddhartha and the Glass Bead Game; I think I may have read more of his works but those two are the ones that stand out the most in my memory. Wishing you a good experience with him. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Gertrude.

Vickie, it’s funny you should mention it because Eastern philosophy comes up in Gertrude - if that’s what you were referring to. Very interesting!

I found it interesting hearing you talking about Trollope, because although I love reading "the classics", I've never given him a go. This was because of the presence of vicars, and parochialism, which, like priests, tend to put me off, in case there are any worthy themes without the humour a great writer like Dickens can inject into them, and also nobody has been able to explain to me what the themes actually are. You make them sound like they would be worth a go, especially since you read a whole series of them. By the way, since you mentioned Les Miserables, there's a priest among many other fab characters in that, and I would highly, highly recommend it to anyone who likes a dramatic, gothic style plot, with all sorts of twists and turns. Think French Dickens. I thought it was a joy, and read it several times, with plans to read it again in my dotage, when I've forgotten the plot!

Donna, thanks for sharing this feedback! It’s funny you should mention parochialism because although that is what many of the characters professions are, I didn’t find the books to be religious in theme, you know. In other words for me, the professions of the men could’ve been as professors. It didn’t play a part in my enjoyment at all. Thank you for your thoughts on Les Miserables a,

Whenever someone mentions Les Miserables I think about how I would like to read it again! I've read it twice and it is super wonderful. Jean Valjean is one of the great protagonists in literature. Doctor Thorne and Framley Parsonage both almost did me in. I then enjoyed The Small House....and have yet to read The Last Chronicle, so you are doing better than me! I think I read The Warden about fifteen years ago, so very slow progress. I did read the first Palliser though....Can You Forgive Her? and liked it a lot. I guess I jump around. Happy reading!

Dolly isn’t a favorite of mine too, but Mr. Harding! Septimus! One of the sweetest men in literature (next to Willem in A Little Life ❤). I saw that readalong announcement of Les Misérables too, and had the same reaction as you since I really want to read it. Then, at the end of the video I heard they use Discord. And when that overly complicated program is involved I’m off 😂.

I just like to know they’re reading it too and would mention it in their videos. Ooo time will tell whether I’m joining!

I hope the 'update' is good news. Certainly sounds like it might be... Thank you for more recommendations. As an English personage I am slightly ashamed to say I have never read any Trollope. Possibly because they are all so big and I don't know where to start. Good luck with the Hesse. He is another one I read a good while ago (Siddhartha and Steppenwolf I think) so I would love to know what you think.

No longer 40 hours in the office? Sounds good… I read _Demian_ by Hesse and didn’t like it - but, it was a slim “coming of age” story which is not my favorite genre, so don’t let that dissuade you. I’m planning to be there for _Les Mis…_ but I can understand your hesitation.

It was a while ago that read Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game - at the time I read everything to the end - today I would have DNFed it. Yes, it was intelligent, but for me it felt inaccessible and elitist. It was a drag and I lost the plot both literally and figuratively. I have just opened a sample and tried to see if maybe now I have somehow grown to be able to appreciate it, but no, it is just too dense for me. I have nor read Gertrude, so can’t comment. I was put off Hesse by that one book 😩
