As I’m a heavy picker playing hard rock, I currently use a Jim Dunlop 3.0 mm.

Wow a 3mm! I dread to think what disaster I'd cause if I tried working with that 😂 I'm guessing that takes some serious accurate precision to be able to use that effectively? Hopefully in the distant future I can become capable picking away with 3mm if I so desire!

@@NewLifeWithGuitar I have used thinner picks ie. 1.5mm and 2.0 mm, and whilst they did the job (more so the 2.0mm), the 3.0 mm suits my playing style, I play rhythm guitar on the electric guitar. I guess I’m what you’d call an intermediate player of very average ability, I use a 3.0 mm as I hit the strings very hard so that I can get good gain from the Marshall Amps that I use.

@@masteryoda498 That makes sense... if you play hard I imagine a lesser pick would just be at more risk of snapping! It probably has a much rounder sound as well when it's thicker I would guess. I'll look forward to the day I can call myself an average intermediate like you... bet it takes years and years to get there!

Great video 👍. I've never really looked into many different pick types and the materials. I currently use a Dunlop, .0.96mm. When it's brand new, it's quite pointy at the top of it which I don't like because I feel it gets stuck when playing between the strings, however, after using it for a while it has rounded at the top which is perfect for me.
@NewLifeWithGuitar

Yeah that's a good point as well actually with how they can change shape over time... especially the thicker one's... I've even read stories of people purposefully shaping their pick sort of like how yours naturally rounded over time!

i play the electric guitar from almost 5 years and i never get why there are so many diffrent picks so i took my first Dunlop sorted pack of picks like 1 year ago and i started try them all and when i tried the jazz III extra grip and the XL one i said "ok these are definitely the one for me." so... to all the beginners just take different picks and try them all until you'll find what fits you the most :))
@NewLifeWithGuitar

Yes I agree and that's what I found was best for me in that first week... so I did as you say, I bought a bunch of different one's. I still want to try more though to see if I can find better than what I have... I still need to order some Jazz III's - I've heard that type mentioned a few times now. Thanks for your input I really appreciate it!!

You are 100% right. Just try out a bunch of different picks. I also wanted to Comment about the Jazz 3 extra grip. These are by far the Best picks I have ever tried. BUT the Jazz 3 isn't good for a beginner learning to strum the Guitar as the pick is very ridgid, doesn't bend at all. As for my tip when picking a pick to play (pun intended) . It always depends on what you want to play and Personal preference. For learning to strum correctly and precisely i would recomend to choose thinner pick. You should be able to bend it. BUT going to thin (like your 0.38) hinders you in gaining the ability to strum precisely the strings you want. So go as Hard as possible while the pick is still able to bend. I don't know a good thickness but my rule of thumb is that I should be able to pick Melodies decently well as well. That way i know I can be precise with the pick. Now, if you mainly want to play a melody by Single picking each string. Then you should go Thick to a Level where the pick does not bend at all. It gives you way more Control over what you want to play and how you want to play it. And with experience, you can also strum with them no Problem.

@@EdonSerifi Awesome advice.... thank you so much for that valuable input! I actually ordered a bunch of different picks yesterday to add to my existing selection... Jazz III's, Tortex Flow, and just standard Tortex... all in 0.5 or 0.6 thicknesses so hopefully thin enough for me to enjoy... I'll find out! All I know is that I should now have enough picks for quite a while as they're all 12 packs 😂 Thanks again for the comment!!

Great video and explantion! I mostly play electric guitar but do have an accoustic I play too. I started off with thinner picks but quickly transitioned to thicker picks. A few weeks back I found my new favorite pick called the Tortex Dunlop Jazz III. I currently use the 1.0mm version but it also comes in tons of other thicknesses. The pick is quite a bit smaller that your average pick and I found it quite odd/difficult to play with the first couple of days but once I was comfortable I found it actually cleaned up my pick grip and overall picking speed/accuracy. Once you start getting into learning scales and need to pick individual notes in sequence you will find a thin pick will quickly limit your speed and accuracy. But I definitely recomend you try out the Jazz III picks at somepoint in the near future at whatever thickness you are happy with at the moment

Awesome, thanks for that! Good point as well about having to get used to it... I think it's probably fair to give a certain type of pick at least a good couple of days even if we're not so sure about it the first time we try it... could grow on us with use! I'll check out these Tortex Dunlop Jazz III ones!

I use .88mm Tortex Flow most of the time, but for heavy strumming I would use something thinner. Tortex flow has a similar shape to the jazz iii but more normal size. A pick that is too thin makes it hard to play fast and accurately.
@NewLifeWithGuitar
Жыл бұрын
@@Ghostal Thanks a lot for that insight! I'll take a look at those as well. I tried strumming with a .73mm last night but think that's still a tad too thick for my strumming skill level, so will switch between .46mm & .60mm at the moment (I haven't really started picking properly yet, that's further down the line - but do use a thicker one for the mini riff exercises I practice). Will look at this Tortex Flow along with the Jazz IIII though!

@@NewLifeWithGuitar Excited to hear your thoughts on them. Just keep in mind it may take a few days to get used to the smaller pick size of the Jazz III. But like I said before I found it really forces you to have a clean grip and in return optimizes picking motion in my experience. (Side note, im hoping to get a video up in the next few days with all my usefull things I found as a beginner. Still getting the hang of this editing thing)

What I've learned is that whilst thickness and material are very important, the roundness or pointyness of the pick has a large say in how it feels as well. If you are holding your pick at an angle more parallel to the strings, then a rounder pick could be better suited to your needs, whereas if it feels more comfortable to tilt your pick say 30 degrees relative to the strings, then it may be better to choose a more pointy pick to ensure that the pick makes adequate contact with the string to pick a note instead of just sliding across it. I tend to hold my pick a bit sideways relative to the strings, and so rn I use a Dunlop Jazz III XL which is on the pointy side. However, I may switch to a Dunlop Flow soon which has more rounding on the edges if that makes sense. Troy Grady has a great video on this and has many videos on picking in general.

Very insightful... thank you so much for sharing! It goes to show that these things are definitely way more than just a pick haha! Nothing standard about them... all unique to each and every one of us... and I could see that straight away. I have the Dunlop Flow but even the thinnest of that style is still a tad too much for my skill level at the moment... I'm hoping in the next 6 - 12 months I'll be able to enjoy all the different feels and sounds they bring as I improve. Thanks again for your input!!

Whilst I have had guitars for many years, I have never progressed further than the absolute beginner stage. I have always used a Jim Dunlop 0.46 for strumming, however I am starting to try strumming with an orange Jim Dunlop Tortex 0.60mm which give a slightly more "robust" sound. Great vid!
@NewLifeWithGuitar

That's exactly what I'm settled with right now... the same 0.46 nylon & like you I occasionally have a dabble with the 0.60 (though nylon as well, I need to get me some Tortex & other types to try). It's fascinating how something seemingly so simple works so differently for everyone!

I've been using Dunlop Tortex T3 for years. They come in gauges from .50mm to 1.5mm. I'm using 1.14mm and 1.5mm with Monster Grips so I can hang on to them. Monster Grips are thin, stick-on, dime-size clear silicone circles that work great. Amazon has them. Tortex, whatever shape you choose, is the best pick material that I've found. The T3 is a standard shape with a more pointed tip. Best of luck. I saw the comment about wear. Tortex hardly wears at all. I've been using the same two picks for at least 2 yrs. and they still look new.

Awesome insights... thanks for sharing! I will look into these for sure. I'm still using nylon picks but do have a few Tortex ones in my bag of them... I'll look into these Monster Grips you use because I find these nylon one's in particular always slip in my fingers every couple of minutes... sounds like these grips would be useful for many types!

@@NewLifeWithGuitar I got tired of dropping picks in the sound hole. It's best to put the grips on a new pick before you touch it's surface. Wipe it with a dry paper towel, and avoid touching the sticky side of the Monster Grip. I peel them off of the sheet with tweezers, position them on the pick, then press them down with my finger. That may be a little OCD, but it works well. You'll figure it out.

When I started playing guitar, I bought the green ones with turtles on them, because I liked green and I liked turtles. I still use .88mm Dunlop Tortex picks for chordy stuff, and for most of my acoustic guitar stuff. Green picks sound better ;) For shreddy and melodic electric guitar stuff, I like the black 1.14mm Jazz III tortex picks. I'm not a fan of how they feel or sound on acoustic guitar, at least in my hands.

Haha I started with this! I would also recommend the Dunlop 0.38 for other beginners. I'm still a beginner of course (6 months) but mostly use a Dunlop 0.60 or 0.73 now so it's cool how we naturally start reaching for something slightly more thicker as our strumming improves!
