As a famous capitalist once said: " There's a sucker born every minute." I'm among the foreigners who are mystified by the apparent lack of domestic appreciation for the art of the many truly great gunmakers who have learned and worked in your little island. Everyone knows the few famous names...usually companies that are still producing. But there are so many others who were often obscure masters of the art in their own time and even more so now. That's where the guidance of an expert, especially a very enthusiastic one like you, Jon, can be so helpful to the novice. Then a one-time shopper/buyer will more likely become a customer for life.

Johnny, you absolutely have a point. Imagine making this channel in the late 1800’s when in the space of 20 years we went from muzzle loading percussion guns to modern bolt action rifles and side by side and over and under shotguns. In that time there were differences and innovations, but by about 1910 or a couple of years later we had the boxlock, the sidelock, the mauser 98, and the pump action and long recoil automatic, and the basis for all modern ammo. The only real innovation has been simplification and use of polymers instead of steel and wood. There has been quite a development of optics, but do I shoot any better with a new Leica compared to a 50 year old 6x42 zeiss.

Agree with you completely. I have more, but I only really use two guns: a wood stocked Remington 870 for waterfowl, steel shot, and inclement weather, and a Citori Lightening Feather, 12 ga, 26" barrels for upland game. I'll never "need" more. Considered a Benelli pump once for a knockaround, but it handled like the proverbial "possum on the end of a rake." If I get anything new now it will be either a dedicated clays gun, probably an auto, or something just for fun. Thanks for your insights.

Loved the video and the ideas within. After a 20 year break from serious clay shooting, I was faced with the decision of "buy a new B726, or improve my very first O/U?" So now my 1981 Type 2 Citori is getting new 30" sporting high post barrels, a new trigger, sights, etc. Then off for extended chokes and a grade 5 Monte Carlo stock. I'd rather invest $2500 into a gun I've loved for 30 years than a new $3500 dollar gun. Especially since my limited skills won't allow me to outshoot either.

I don't think it can be much added to a o/u shotgun design without becoming complicated. Benelli 828 is an example. On the other hand, if one manufacturer gives you one year warranty, and another one gives you 10 years warranty for the same design, is there technological advancement, even the design being the same? Of course it is. And it will always be a market for remarkable well build guns.

A very difficult subject for a simple thing that does a simple job. The thing is that you are not taking on a target more than 60-70 meters. It's not a target gun at 500 metres. I totally agree with some points you make on this vid. I for myself have shot since the age of 9 or so with air rifles, pistols. Had some time in the armed forces and was a quite proficient in 9mm, .303, 7.62 etc. I think the shotgun market is very narrow owing to it's capabilities. The only difference is the price people are willing to pay for their gun. It's a market that looking at the population in the UK that do shoot is rather small. In my book buy what you want live with what you can afford and enjoy. But at the end of the day I can see what you say...Silver pigeon with ten peeps at a shoot etc. I for myself for practical reasons have a B725 and a MK38. Happy days with them. Cracking vids! Keep up the good work!

The amount of hype in the gun industry is... well... about the same as every other industry where the product lasts and lasts. How else to sell more stuff? I recall a discussion on an American golf channel years back where three golf pros were on to talk about new equipment. The first two went on and on about the "fabulous", "fantastically engineered" and "ground breaking new designs" in golf clubs that would have you hitting, long, straight and perfect shots from anywhere on the course. "Go and see your local golf pro NOW!! Get a set of Super Duper Ball Bashers NOW!!" The third guy kind of smiled whimsically and said (to everyone else's horror), "There are few people as gullible as the average American golfer with a valid credit card." He went on to mention that with all the so-called advances in golf club design and technology, the average scores for the pros on the various established golf courses had hardly come down by much over the past sixty years and was likely due more to technique, practice and better golf balls than better clubs. Worse, the chances that Jane or Joe Duffer was going to play any better with a new set of expensive clubs was the same as a snowball's chance in hell. His advice was play the clubs you have and spend your money on lessons. The reason Jane and Joe Duffer were duffers was because they had never learned how to properly swing a club much less choose the right club for a given shot. So, learn to shoot the gun you have. If it fits you, breaks clays or drops birds, spend your money on shooting, not a new gun.

I'll take a fixed choke early nikko, winchester, mirook etc over any new version on offer. They balance and shoot amazingly, and boy oh boy do the look the goods. I understand the sporting shotgun industry is a tricky one they cost a deal to produce so they need to sell lots to make it viable. Hence why so many good gun makers end up going by the wayside, but give me a 30inch fixed full and 3/4 and i can hit or kill anything in the air.
