Marty Music hello, I am learning how to play the guitar now for about a year. About 2 months ago, I learned some scale boxes and now I'm learning some beginner soloing techniques. I play a Stratocaster copy trough a nice 20 watt solid state amplifier. I'd like to buy one or two pedals just to smoothen up the sound a little bit (not looking for distortion), what pedal or pedals would you recommend? Thank you!

I've been watching Marty since I was 12 years old and I'm 27 now. 15 years of playing! It's amazing how our mind and muscle memory progress. When first starting I avoided the C chord like the plague and now it's probably one of the most used and easiest chords to transition to and between! Blows my mind to even think there was ever a point that I did struggle with that chord. So to anyone here that is brand new to guitar all I can say Is keep going and the struggle will become nothing but a silly memory of the past!

Something I just learned after all of these years that relates here - each major chord is only 3 notes (1-3-5 of the scale) and you can combine those 3 notes anywhere on the fret board. I came from the pentatonic minor scale but never really learned the major scale or backing theory, so that has really helped me out - might help out some other intermediate learners out there.

One thing I also discovered recently when I was teaching a student barre chords is that if you take an E string rooted barre chord and just move your index finger to the B string, you get an open chord style that you can play to make it easier for people who can't play barred stuff. And if it's an A string rooted chord then you move your barred index finger to the high e string. So I discovered this because my student asked me why she can't play the F chord with his three fingers on the higher strings and I told her she could then I was messing around and discovered that.

E, Em, E7, A, Am, A7, D, Dm, D7 all work well when moving up the neck. But, C and G are difficult for me to slide up using the CAGED approach. I have seen some instructors talk about playing chord fragments instead of trying to have a 4 finger 4 fret stretch to play a C or G up the neck. Like the bottom 4 strings of a G shape work for a "G shape" chord (treble E is the root) and the A, D, and G strings work for a C7 shaped chord that you can slide around with root on the A string.

Couple more thoughts: first, thank you for showing us the D minor and how it transposes up to E minor, etc. It sounds stupid, but I wondered if it worked that way for minor and other chords like if you move up from an E to the F major, for example. Also, it may be a great series of videos to put out called "what I wished I learned in my first year of guitar" like this one. Thoroughly enjoyed this and solved a major question for me. Thanks, and sorry for the multiple comments.

Thanks Marty, excellent. My buddy showed me that in 1978, I started playing in 1977, if I may add in the musical alphabet, there are no flats or sharps between B&C, and E&F. Thanks again excellent demo.

I've learned many Songs to play from you. So my opinion is, that your kind to teach and explain is very actual. I play Guitar since 4 years. ( i started with 50 years). Most of the Songs i try to play is from your lessons. So i hope you continue this for long time. 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Dirk ( sorry for my english. I'm from Germany.),Dirk

Great video man! These concepts lead to less efforts needed to be put in while playing a guitar, you can group different voicings of chords and get them all together in one place and play an entire songs with minimal travel between the frets. Sadly i got to know this information around 4 years into my guitar playing.

I am just discovering all that Marty covered in this video, and it is absolutely amazing how it opens up the entire neck for play. I found that there are certain chord shapes that are just naturally easier for me to form, and this theory allows me a lot more versatility to play with buddies. Like everything, it just takes a lot of practice, but so worth it.

Thank you so much for this lesson Marty. I’ve always thought music theory would be way too difficult for me. But you have a way of explaining things that makes it fun and interesting and thought provoking. you must be unique as a listener as Beefheart turned me against the avant guard for its chaos. not the cool tensin between resolve, just unresolved chaos that to me is at first frusrating then evolves to pure four letter barage. its cool that you can enjoy something so truely eccentric.

Sultans progression pattern i.e. Dm C major Bflat major A7th is one of my very favorites it is so open to playing over between major and minor. i teach my kids on piano first c major and A minor- same notes, all white keys, and it seems so easy to start to improvise its intuitive to the sounds we hear. keep exploring and enjoying for the polyphonic array on guitar is the most satisfying endeavor. ps paradise rocks!!!!

I knew the song in the beginning was “Over the Hills and Far Away” by Alex Zeppelin, but it also reminded me of “Jane Says” by Jane’s Addiction. Then you mention the LZ song uses the notes G and A 3:45 and then it made sense.

MetalFaceOff when I heard Marty play the intro I was trying to figure out where I heard that before. It was "Janes Says" by Janes Addiction. Thanks for writing that.
