@WhatifAltHist

I read a huge amount. Each episode pulls from a variety of things that I've read. This episode pulls from more general materials and less from works of a specific era. The 5 I owe the greatest debt to for this episode are. 1)Susan Wise Bauer: A History of the Ancient World 2 and 3) Will Durant's "The Life of Greece" and "Our Oriental Heritage" (Almost every single one of my videos set before 1500 owes a debt to Will Durant. He wrote an 11 volume history of civilization that just has incredible coverage and detail.) 4)Eric Cline:1177 BC, The Year Civilization Collapsed (Covers mostly the era before this but gives precious background info) 5)A Brief History of Myth: Karen Armstrong(for the information of Early Judaism and Axial Ages etc...) This video pulled on more documentaries than I normally use, which is where I got a fair amount of the information of David himself. If I need verifiable details, like population size or dates, I'll look them up. My best sources in general include Matthew Whites' "Atrocities", which covers the 100 worst atrocities in history. The Osprey Military history books are excellent, they provide very strong details on very specific topics. So if you want to know all the details on the War of the Triple Alliance, it's there. I've already mentioned by debt to Will Durant. McNeill is the best for gaining a general understanding of how history works and the grand patterns at work. His "Rise of the West" and "Plagues and Peoples" are really necessary for anyone who wants to see the bigger picture in history. I hope this was helpful.

What if Thomas Jefferson included the condemnation of slavery in the Declaration of Independence? American Revolutionary War The south is outraged. They declare their own independence against Great Britain and the northern colonies. Their capital is Charleston, SC. They pull all their troops from the northern colonies. This damages the USA independence effort. Spain, France, and Netherlands all support the north. With increased support from Europe the UK surrenders. Seeing a new powerful ally France and Spain also help the north take down the south. A southern nationalist goes under cover into the north and assassinated Thomas Jefferson. After a long war, in 1783 the south surrenders. An alliance between the USA, France, and Spain is formed. By 1788 heavy monarchist influence is in America. Washington wins the elections, but is then overthrown by American monarchists and French and Spanish settlers. Washington gains back control and quells the monarchist rebellions. This includes the French and Spanish settlers fighting with the rebels. French-American War France declares war to America for attacking its settlers. Spain doesn’t join the war, but leaves the alliance with America. The Spain settlers go to Mexico, developing the region further. This also bring a mixed Spanish American culture still present in Mexico today. George Washington is now heavily anti monarchist along with the rest of America. The USA shuts down all rebellions and now is fighting in the Louisiana territory. France sends almost all the navy to the Americas to crush the USA. The year is 1789. By now the navy is almost in America. Meanwhile in France people are sick of poverty and start to rebel. Meanwhile in Britain, the king draws up a plan to take France. With frances best forces on the other side of the world, Britain starts in great invasion of France. They quickly take the French coastline and push into the lands. Shocked, the navy and military is called home, and a treaty is signed with the USA. The USA will get all of Louisiana territory except the southern part (today the state of Louisiana is the only part that remains in France. The border between France and USA is the state border between Mississippi and Arkansas. So the territory they have is all of modern day Louisiana but minus the Spanish territory. ) Britain takes over all of France and annexes it. They also shut down the French rebellions. French Revolution By 1802 the French were sick of being part of Great Britain. They fought for independence, with Napoleon Bonaparte in charge. They win their independence back, and continue to conquer Europe in the napoleonic wars. Like in our timeline, France is beaten. 1st Spanish-American War In 1819 tensions between Spain and USA have reached a boiling point. They go to war. In the end, Spain surrenders. They cede Florida to the USA. The Texans gain independence from Spain in 1836. They are not fully recognized by the Mexicans though. In 1837 the French territory of Louisiana, (now with its state borders) declares independence from France. They win, and form the Republic of Louisiana. When Texas denies joining the USA in 1945, america sends settlers and troops to Texas. This angers Mexico who declares war on the USA. Mexican-American War Mexico invades Texas, still saying it’s their land. In response the USA want to move troops to meet the Mexican troops in Texas. Texas knows they have no chance if they get invaded by both USA and Mexico, so they sign the agreement of Houston. The agreement states that USA will be able to move troops through Texas and fight in Texas. In return Texas will gain full recognition by USA and get some money. Eventually the USA beats Mexico and the land it gets in today’s timeline minus Texas claimed territory.

you forget that in our timeline the assyrians expelled the Philistines to babylon (just like they did to part of the northern israelite kingdoms population), where they eventually merged with local society and faded away. i don't see why it would be different in this alternative timeline. also thats why the Philistines disappear from the bible after the assyrian conquest.

I find myself fascinated by playing the what-if game. Though I feel like it's almost an exercise in futility given that we have no clue how a given people would have responded to just one event being different. Does one battle and another conquest destroy the proto-Jewish identity or does it shape it in new ways for a future leader to mold it into what it would be? Likewise if the Romans were conquered by an Hellenic empire, do they just stop being the Romans we know or do they enter an era similar to the rule of the Etruscans? I don't mean to be that guy, but a few corrections: The Philistines were not Greeks, they spoke a semitic language and had far more in common with the Phoenicians than the Greeks. Also the assumption that the Greeks would have dominated the Mediterranean as a single polity feels off given everything we know about ancient Greek politics and culture, both before and after Alexander. Finally, Rome became a semi-Hellenized italian city state, and when it was invaded by Pyrrhus of Epirus, a Hellenic state, it crushed that invasion after heavy losses. The Romans had a history of taking a lot of punishment in defensive wars only to turn the tables and utterly vanquish their foes. I just see little reason why an alt history of this nature would affect the rise of Rome. You're definitely right though, a world without the Abrahamic faiths would be almost unrecognizable today given how much those religions have shaped history and how much the Jewish people themselves have contributed to human civilization.

I disagree with your timeline some and also some of your info. The objection i have is that the Philistines were probably not Mycenaean Greek or but were Minoan. Religion wise they were vastly separate from even their Cretian relatives who worshiped different Gods. The Philistines adopted the Phonican gods so i would doubt they would aid a Greek dominance of the sea. Eveidince shows that during the Judges period of isreal the Minoans were already worshiping Phonician deitys, the Mycenaean conquest of Crete would have likely increased that divide more. They likely moved there before that event which would have made them at one point Egyptian Tributary's.

The fact that Einstein was a jew didn't really contribute much to his genius. He could have done everything he did even when not being Jewish. When you really think about it, Judaism didn't contribute much to the history of humankind as a religion. It doesn't have many followers and didn't inspire people as much as other religions. Another contender for smallest change with the biggest effect would be if socrates/plato never existed(or if they died in war in their youth), we wouldn't see the rise of platonism/neoplatonism(which would severely weaken Christianity if it does happen to exist) as well as we could still see sophism remain the dominant philosophical school of thought in greece. The homeric tradition and homeric moral systems could potentially survive which would lead to the west having a power centric morality. Rome could become even more greek culturally and more united because of the association of power and goodness which would also snuff out any remaining abrahamism left. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this, it would definitely have massive changes to the western philosophical tradition that would have broad cultural effects as well.

I doubt that Rome wouldn't have risen. The Greeks (aside from Macedonians) never really had ambitions of conquests and a martial mentality similar to what Rome (and to some degree Carthage) had. Even with the "influx" of Greeks to the west, I see the effect being a stronger Greek cultural presence in southern Gaul and Eastern Iberia. Carthage was always in conflict with the Greeks in Sicilia so with stronger Greek presence the chances of a Roman Carthage alliance against the Greeks would be even higher (they already had some sort of deal when Pyrrhus came).

What sources are you using? The earliest documentation of the House of David come over ~100 years later than his assumed reign. House is not David but a reference to a family. The book of Samuel has Samuel proclaim David anointed (Messiah) three-times and critical ancient near east scholars interpret that as the melding of different stories and legends of multiple Davids. No Davidic archeological evidence or Solomon exists and those, who claim so, use the Bible as an accurate historical document. Most are religious scholars with a presumption that the Bible is trustworthy. David and Solomon are legendary and at best are propaganda for the supremacy of Jerusalem. There are better actual fulcrums of history: Assassination of Caeser, the reign of Augusts, the rise of Islam, Greecian defeat of Persian. Mongol expansion, the life & legends of Zoroaster, Agriculture, Cyrus the Great (without him no legend of David would have been documented), the industrial revolution, Marx and lastly the Bronze Age Collapse.

This story is a Jewish myth. There was otherwise a decisive battle over which the existence of Israel did depend more: the siege of Jerusalem by Sennacherib during the reign of Hezekiah in 701 BC. If Sennacherib had took Jerusalem then we have no modern Judaism (no Babylonian exile), no Christianity, no Islam, etc..

4:56 what about the Assyrians and Armenians then? Why are you not surprised that these survived? I understand the Armenians, being hardy mountain people, but is there a particular reason why Assyrians remained? Also, you love to always shove Mithraism into every "christianity machine broke" scenario, but do you think there is a chance that the Greeks would invent a monotheistic religion out of Platonism, in a way similar to how Brahmanism came to be in India?

I think Islam would still exist. In the Bible, Abraham’s first son with his slave was cast out into the wilderness and eventually his descendant founded Islam. Abraham was supposedly around 5,000BC so this is way before David V Goliath, thus Islam could still possibly exist without the widespread of Judaism

In Islam there is great emphasis on the prophets after David . No David , no Solomon , no Jesus . The butterfly effect would most likely mean Muhammad was never born , and if he was he more likely would have been influenced by the dominant Greek culture as opposed to the strong Hebrew and Christian influence in Arabia seen in his time

A possible significant religion in the absence of any Abrahamic faiths would be Manichaeism. Though, I suppose it was influenced by early Christianity as apparently Jesus is still a prophet in it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manichaeism It was competing with Christianity for significance before eventually being outlawed in the roman empire and pushed out by islam to only remain in central asia.

You are partially wrong at 4:19, Judaism is a monotheistic religion since it's foundation in the times of Abraham. However, a phenomenon named Syncretism - merging original religious beliefs with local paganism (you can see it as a mix between religions), a common thing in the area at that time. The Bible has shown many times how the ancient prophets tried to fight this Religious Syncretism. Therefore, Judaism never was a non-monotheistic religion. (Religious Syncretism happened in Christianity too, and it doesn't mean that Christianity is a non-monotheistic religion).

So I have some basic feedback after watching a few of your videos. While I am not sure the setup you are using, it seems that video quality and audio clarity have improved over time. However, in my opinion, you go over details far too quickly, and without very much enthusiasm in your speech. One other thing I can think of is your current icon and channel art, it doesn't really make your channel unique. I would love to know if there is a specific reason behind your current icon, but from my first impression, it seems like a quick screenshot of an old painting. One thing I think could really improve your channel page, my first thought would be to make your logo more simple, and less like its a picture and more like a logo, keeping the boat design but redesigning it. Your ideas are great, and in my opinion better than older channels with ideas and execution. An idea like Canute's North Sea Empire? Never even heard of it, because of ideas like that people can be entertained and learn about things they may have never heard of or looked into. I like how transparent you were about your research in another comment, and I really think you have good content. But I believe you needed to clean up some rough edges. I am no professional and this is all critical feedback. I hope you succeed and I will continue watching.

I did see a video recently from AtlasPro which talked about Doggerland. Basically it was a piece of land during the ice age which connected the The British Isles to continental Europe, but over time due to the ice age ending Doggerland sunk. Though there was a big island east of England that remained, but that sunk over time. So my question is what if Doggerland still existed? Whether it was the whole land that connected England to the mainland or just the island east of England after the rest of the land sunk

I disagree with the whole humanity being less technologically developed, like you said beyond the Mediterranean empire they carve out it's entirely unknown what could happened, but plenty of races have contributed to advancing humanities technology, it's all about sharing ideas, and an empire that big happening so much earlier then it did in our timeline means ideas could spread around much earlier then it does in our timeline.

I disagree that christiniaty wouldnt arise. Christianity was basically a big sincretism of religions and philosofies present in Judea. So that would still happen. Would of course be a diferent religion with a diferent name and many diferences, withouth the Old Gospel. But the dualism between God and Satan, the story of th mother, the father, the son and te resurrection, the cross, the ceremonial use of wine wine, the importance of the soul and the afterlife... All that was present in doctrines of people that exist here. So I guess another christianity would emerge. I wonder how the lack of judaism and a diferent christianity would affect the emergence of Islam.
