Joe Ingles is a highly skilled, versatile player that can facilitate the offense from the high post, the wing, and even as the ballhandler. He can slash, he passes well, he screens well for his position, and can shoot a high percentage from any spot in the playbook. His positioning is excellent both sides of the floor, and he’s a capable defender. He’s precisely the type of player that imaginative basketball minds love… and he’s also the type of guy that the unimaginative think is terrible. He doesn’t scowl and he doesn’t overwhelm you with athleticism or raw production stats. Doc has never been much of a progressive basketball mind, and his teams have never overachieved in the postseason because of it… rather, they’ve often been finished off in dramatic, disappointing fashion. As a player, he was a safe, conservative, middle of the pack guy who you could depend on, but wasn’t elite caliber and never sniffed a title. His coaching reflects that, and is consistently outwitted when he refuses to make playoff adjustments. Don’t even get me started on Doc the GM.

I was mad when he didn’t make the Clips roster, as a Clippers fan. Especially since he went to another Western team. Ingles could shoot the 3 and pass the ball, that’s a great asset to any team. Plus the Jazz signed for such a deal. Love watching him play.

Hearing this gives me war flashbacks of seeing Doc waste a lot of young players' potentials. It's refreshing seeing Ty Lue play guys like T-Mann and Brandon Boston. The Lob City years with Doc were great, sad that the Clips didn't win at least one chip, but I'm glad Doc's not with the Clips anymore.

Got lots of love for Doc for what he did in Boston, but that mentality isn't something he you can just take and implement anywhere. JJ likes to joke about it, but they were very difficult players (lots of ego), too late in their career to just mold into a new system.

Ingles would have fit with the Clips or Warriors in that era so well. Clips would have been fun wrestling heel energy personified with Ingles. Warriors would have had the ability to do that too; Klay is under rated as an Aussie style larrikin, and Bogut and Draymond are definitely heels. It's just that Steph is that much of a babyface that the Warriors get seen as a wholesome team.

Shane Battier types like Ingles or the slightly better (watch the vod for context) Josh Giddey are hard to figure out how to use. They do everything really okay, without showing any elite skill that blows people away (because their BBIQ is the elite skill). It's not that they are versatile, they just know how to extract all the blood from the stone that they can. They are the archetype of high floor low ceiling - they are the elite role player/glue guys every team desperately needs at spots 4,5,7 and 8 in a rotation. So much so, Joe splitting time between 5 and 7 nearly won 6th man of the year over the guy on his team at the 6 spot in the rotation.
