If a giant banana were actually orbiting the Earth that closely, it would be destroyed by gravity and the result would be delicious banana pudding for everyone.
@pradyumnac
7 жыл бұрын
the banana is constantly falling towards earth but its angular speed will make it so that it never actually reaches the surface of the earth(you could say centrifugal force). If it was still and not orbiting the earth then your thesis would be true
@nadzianyx
7 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the incredibly non-spheroidal distribution of Banana mass affect the Banana's orbit such that it would come much closer to Earth during perigee? And if it's only ~250 miles above the Earth, the tips of the Banana would experience pretty significant atmospheric drag with no thrusters available to compensate, right? I imagine it would succumb to orbital decay pretty quickly.
@pradyumnac
7 жыл бұрын
Nadzia Skalapendra if the tip of the banana is pointed outwards then there will be little atmosphere drag, also a bananas density is more or less uniform so the centre of mass will be in the centre of the banana not causing a spin which will make it take longer to get out of orbit
@Florek112
7 жыл бұрын
I think it doesn't need to reach the surface to make a pudding. It is clearly in the Roche limit for Earth, and would be probably ripped apart due to the tidal forces...

Now this makes me wonder, how thick would the peel be that protects the fruit inside? How deep would one of those divots in the peel be as well, if a human were to stand on it? If every human on Earth had a portion of this super banana equal to the size of a normal banana every day at breakfast, how long until it is all gone?

The peel will be at least 300 km thick
@khenricx
Жыл бұрын
Assuming the Banana is 3400 km tall, and a normal banana is around, let's say 17 cm tall, the banana showed is 20 000 000 time bigger than a normal banana. What's important is the volume, so to compare the big banana volume to a normal banana volume, you just have to cube that ratio. 20 000 000^3 is 8 000 000 000 000 000 000 000. So the big banana is worth 8 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 normal bananas. We just have to divide by the number of people on Earth, which was closer to 7 billions when the original question was asked but now it's closer to 8 billions. This gives us 1 000 000 000 000 breakfasts, or roughly 2.739 billion years of banana breakfast for the whole human population. So that's the answer : If the 8 billions of us ate a banana portion of this huge banana every morning, It would take 2.739 billion years for us to eat it all.

if it was a small banana, it would need sss, but since it's a very large object, sss doesn't penetrate far enough to do anything. for example a small candle, light would penetrate for a few mm's, but on a super huge candle,, light *still* only penetrates for a few mm, hence the sss effect is not noticeable, so, no, i don't need to apply an sss effect to it
@GraveUypo

yeti dynamics fair enough, but i still think it could use it. call it artistic license, but if it looks MORE like a banana, even if it's physically unrealistic, it's probably worth doing. is it receiving light reflected from earth? that would be a significant amount of light at this distance and would probably soften shadows, getting the smoothing effect on shadows, i suppose. look at us discussing the physics of light scattering on a giant banana in space. science!
