I did tests using the RX 460, 380 and 270 with launch drivers, and then incrementally newer updates up til the latest. There really wasn't much of a pattern or consistency in the results- GTA V on the R9 380, for example, scored the same in 2015, 2019 and 2021 but had a 10 FPS drop in 2018. I usually go years between upgrading graphics card drivers. This is a good experiment though, since I know they always have to put in game specific optimizations and fixes into the drivers. Games and game engines are always finding new methods to perform things like lighting, texture mapping, and other graphics rendering work. You say bad optimizations, but ironically good game optimizations might need an updated driver for your GPU to take advantage of them, constituting a potential performance or stability boost. If a graphics driver is not specifically coded to handle these methods, which they often are not because the likes of NVidia and AMD cannot make predictions on how games will function, then things will be incredibly inefficient to the point to drop framerates or even destabilize the program completely. Since they cannot predict future software technology, even if they'd like to, updating constantly is the only option left over. Not to mention Windows is constantly updating, especially nowadays, which can fundamentally change the framework the graphics driver is meant to sit on and can also affect game stability and performance if the versions are not updated often enough. The fact is, the software around the graphics driver is always changing and if the driver does not change with it, it will be left in the dust and become infamous for terrible performance- potentially killing the brand responsible for it by proxy. Without recent drivers: some games aren't affected, some lose little performance, and some are entirely unplayable. It's a shot in the dark what will happen, some updates even make some games worse. But as software is always evolving, more efficient methods and optimizations are being discovered (as are exploits and security holes that need to be patched), constantly updating your GPU drivers is something I absolutely recommend you do regularly- especially if you play modern games or have a modern card as the optimizations and fixes almost always target those.

I find driver updates tend to offer improved stability in _certain_ games, perhaps higher fps in _certain_ games. Maybe less stutter. But most of the time the performance improvements are not really noticeable. Especially if you have VRR. @michaelmonstar4276

The effects of drivers really vary, not only like you said that there could be variables, such as the system or OS-version you run on and so forth, but also without changing any of that. - For example, at one point in time, I had a GTS 450, like a lower mid-range GPU because that's what I could afford. And while it was fine to enjoy some games at Medium-High settings with decent performance, I actually noticed that installing newer drivers degraded performance. - This was probably due to it sharing drivers with many other GPUs, and Nvidia just not giving a crap about the GTS 450 (as probably few people used it), screwing over anyone using that chip for games. - What's worse is that it was a big hassle to find out which driver-version was actually best for it, having to uninstall and reinstall older versions and test each of them. - I gave up on that and eventually bought a GTX 750Ti, which obviously lasted much better. - But that left a really bad taste in my mouth and helped me decide to just move to AMD the next time. - Radeon Software is also questionable, but at least they seem to be considerate about their older GPUs with decent support.

On my old system (several years ago), I had a low-end Nvidia card, for which I installed the latest drivers. When I attempted to run Aliens vs. Predator 2 and No One Lives Forever, all the textures were wrong. It was very surreal looking. I had to drop down several driver versions to get them to run properly. When I ran No One Lives Forever 2, which was a NEWER game, I had to go to even OLDER drivers to fix all the graphical glitches. Granted, they weren't as severe as with the first game, but they were still annoying. I re-installed the latest drivers when I finished those games. Then I decided to replay the game Thief: Gold. As soon as I jumped in the water and looked down, the in-game portion of the display went blank. Once again, I had to downgrade the drivers to make the game playable, although I was never able to get it to work 100% the way it was supposed to. Lighting/tint would change underwater depending on the camera angle, some transparent objects were opague, etc.

Driver updates aren’t really geared for better FPS. It’s to fix bugs you may or may not have run into. Could be better use of power to make it somewhat more efficient. Could even be a security Patch to fix a back door into your system root. It’s usually not about more FPS. The more performance came from making the hardware. You can’t get much better from there once you have good enough software.

In my personal experience is not necessary to always install the latest driver. The drivers mostly give atention to latest model cards and games and the perfomance on older games could be worse. Only when majority of security updates exiced or perfomance issues with games you should update your drivers, I would say every 2-3 months in average is ok

I think this could be moreso of a testament to AMD than as a whole with gpus. My housemate had an old gaming laptop with a 1050Ti, and never updated his drivers. It was something he primarily used for college work, but once he qualified he decided to game on it. Some of the games he was playing were borderline unplayable. The Witcher 3 would achieve a max of maybe 15fps on all low 1080p. I showed him how to update his drivers and immediately he shot up to ~50fps. Again, this isn't exactly a large sample size but definitely something that I have witnessed myself and can attest to. It could also have just been the game.

Every time I update the drivers fro the RX Vega 8 on my laptop, I never see any improvement at all. In fact, both Nvidia and AMD always state that their drivers are optimized for the latest and greatest games (games that just came out of the oven) and that older drivers should be more appropriate for older games. Nevertheless, I rather have the newest drivers instead of the older ones for stability purposes, as explained by Steve in the video.

I remember my old Dell Vostro with HD 3000 iGPU. It was a weird machine. The drivers provided by Dell performed significantly better than generic drivers provided by Intel.

I had a similar case with my GTX 850M. I hadn't installed a single new driver since 2016 and it so happened that my sister had to take it in 2017. I took it back a few months ago and when I tried gaming on it on the train for school, I was met with an error screen on the two more modern titles I had installed, not letting me play them. I luckily had installed one of my older games, so I at least had that to play to kill the time.

I think I saw someone do this with Nvidia drivers, and it was a lot different it seems they slow down the drivers? I would also like to see the other versions of the drivers tested like the Linux ones, but that might be out of scope for one of your videos

Another thing to test (though I feel like it's been done), is drivers from web VS Winodws Update. I used to have an issue with windows update where it would keep over riding my AMD drivers with the Windows Update drivers. Always made me sad when i'd load a game and I could tell the Windows drivers decided to install again. As I recall the biggest issue was the Sound. HDMI sound didn't work on the windows drivers as I recall.

We should notice a thing... average FPS-1%-0.1% is not a good way to measure performance. Using less VRAM will result in "unloaded" textures, being visible more in the distance or "where you don't look". GTA V skyscrapers do look different between drivers. Recently, on It Takes Two with my girlfriend we noticed that some floor textures were loading in fron of us, when we were changing visuals (on amd 5500xt 8G). Even if your FPS are at 50 in both driver situations, your experience can be truly different when entering a building or at very high speed (like on an aitplane in GTA V). My gf is not a gamer but felt uneasy looking at that, and I also had my experience ruined a bit.. we were playing on a 4k TV at a locked 30FPS, GPU was never at 100% (so no bottleneck) but still the textures switched between low res to high res in front of us. FPS and gpu usage are not everything, also textures quality/loading can be hugely impacted.

A bit of a rant, but one of the things that pisses me off about PC gaming community is that updating drivers seems to be the first solution proposed by most "specialists" to any kind of issue. Game X doesn't start? Update drivers. Image flickering? Update drivers. Noisy fans? Update drivers. Even if your graphics card is a couple generations old and the manufacturer no longer puts any resources/effort into its drivers (in favor of newer products), you're still being told to update them to the latest version, because that's what everyone does. The reality is, in case of legacy graphics cards, the latest drivers often decrease performance compared to older ones - the best example would be Nvidia deliberately handicapping Kepler (GTX7xx) cards in favor of Maxwell (GTX9xx) GPU's, only to then "fix" it with driver 353.06 when they were caught red handed. Allegedly, they did the same thing with Maxwell GPU's upon release of Pascal GPU's, but I wasn't able to confirm it myself. As for AMD, I've owned 2 RX 570's and 1 RX 580, and each of them had some kind of issue with latest driver that wasn't present with older, 19.5.2 driver. Long story short, in my experience, updating drivers is pointless for legacy GPU's and often brings opposite to expected result. Unless the game specifically prompts you to update drivers (like Red Dead Redemption 2), just stick with what you know works fine - if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I lost a lot of performance in my old 760 by updating the drivers(specially in BF4, around 15fps), now I only do this when it is absolutely needed(I had to update the ones in my 1060 to play the 2042 beta). In general my experience with software updates overall are always worsened peformance and new and exciting bugs. If it has a UI they also tend to get a worse one. It's also important to consider that even if you gain some peformance in new games, you may lose a lot in older games or even be unable to open them. And never download a driver on day one, wait some months to see if it don't have any critical error.

Great video, a video on a Nvidia card such as the GTX 970 would be awesome. Nvidia used be the go to for drivers that just worked, but recently they seem to have had a little dip. First we had the recent driver update that they had to release a quick hot fix to, and we seem to have many instances of recent driver updates causing game freezes on older GPUs (ie. the 900 and sometimes 10 series). Going back to driver 442.74 seems to resolve the issues as a quick fix. Has anyone else experienced similar issues ?

Not very relevant to the test, but if you wanna change Fallout 4's FOV, you need to use the in-game console (press ~ in game). Changing it through the INI isn't enough since that will only adjust player view model's FOV. The command is fov 80 80, replace the number with any value you want.

There should only be a difference if the game wasn't out when the first drivers were released or maybe if the game got a really big update in between the initial driver release and now. But I thought the difference would be bigger and I would have liked to see what difference Vulkan would have made in RDR2 because things like this that get added with new drivers would make the biggest difference and give you free extra performance.

The updates, like most updates say when you do get the release notes, are usually to further make games less demanding on the gpu while in some cases being more stable. Unfortunately for you though this card and the 500 series cards had the worst of it in the amd update drivers fiasco where some drivers were less stable early on and continued to do so until June of 2018 when the 500 series was already a year old. And then the 5000 series came along and that was another year of terrible unoptimized drivers. Even today we still suffer it from 2019. A better example of how gpus have come is either the 900 series nvidia cards or the 1000 series nvidia cards. They usually have the most volatile because a majority of their driver updates were to attack issues with games rather than usual bug fixes. The games as well are not the most volatile games to play with lower drivers like call of duty modern warfare or believe it or not destiny 2. There are much more aggressive games like crysis or the division 2. Even indie games that just came out don't expect to run on older hardware for nvidia.

Updates GPU driver to it's latest helps your PC stabilizes FPS, Which in turn boost FPS up for some games Any difference should be your concerns when it's come to Gaming FPS And it's help the Developers side know that the cards still have Consumers therefore they can keeps supporting it. As they see fit So yeah, Not updating GPU Driver is basically tanking capability and its lifespan that can be extended by just updating driver multiple times a year.
