Just came across this video tonight and I had to laugh at the timing! Tomorrow is my 14th day without grains! I decided to stop eating grains on my own so it's fabulous to see this video from you. Talk about confirmation! It was tough the first few days, but not so much now. I have arthritis and I can honestly say that I am not in as much pain as I was before I stopped eating grains. I have also lost weight and yet I don't feel deprived at all. Anyway, just wanted to share my story and so great to see this information from you.

I've been living a ketogenic lifestyle with daily Intermittent fasting since 11/30/2021 and the most interesting thing I have discovered with my 56-year-old body is I no longer feel sore the day following strenuous activities. It also takes me longer to become tired when doing activities. We are having some a/c ductwork repair being done in our attic so I rented a storage unit 01/03/2021 and began moving containers some of which were very heavy from our second floor down the stairs, into the vehicle then unload them. I made about 20 trips total up and down the stairs non-stop for about 3 hours, Monday. I never became tired it was so strange to me. I wondered that night if I should take a few aspirin as I used to prevent soreness the following day but decided to see how I felt without it and I had not one bit of soreness. It is fascinating to me the difference in how I feel and how my body is responding to no grains and no sugar. Thank you, Dr. Berg, for the wealth of extremely beneficial information you share!

Thank you for the video, Eric. In October of 2020, I had blood work done that showed high fasting glucose. I started checking my blood sugar myself and found my fasting blood sugar levels from 112 to 115. I started doing a strict Keto diet and then added intermittent fasting two weeks later and then finally a 3 day fast. My fasting blood sugar went down to between 83 and 88. My weight dropped from 203lbs to 170. I'm 6ft, Btw. 3 months later, I had my annual wellness checkup. Everything is normal. In fact, I had been taking a thyroid hormone for hypothyroidism since 2015. 30 days prior to my blood work in January, I stopped taking it. That was over a year ago. My thyroid blood work has been checked 3 times in the last year... normal with no medication.

You should show us your ideal model of the food pyramid. When I was growing up, I always thought grains were the most important food group because thats just what the food pyramid in my elementary school showed us. Looking back, 6-11 servings is just way too excessive.

Dr Berg is so spot on about grains. I gave up all grains when I found out I had kidney stones and had my gallbladder removed. I’ve lost 23 kg, feel so much more alert and sleep better, not to mention many of the other advantages Dr Berg talks about. It lead me to stop consuming sugar as well. You just can’t imagine how much better you’ll feel if you stop grains. It’s a life changer.

I've had 'cheat days' every weekend involving grains and sugar. It was working for me when I lost my first 45 lbs. But now that I'm closer to my target weight (33 lbs to go), the cheat days stalled my fat loss. I'm going to cut those entirely and get back to you in 2 weeks.

By the by, Dr. Berg, you are looking so healthy and handsome! A doctor that looks sick and obese is a total turn off, but your looks definitely invite interest!

I mean no disrespect by this but of course you lost weight. You did IF which in most cases is simply cutting out an entire meal and you eliminated an entire macro (carbs) from your diet. There are many ways to lose weight and it always comes down to calories in vs calories out and with IF and keto you are certainly consuming fewer calories. Different things work better for different people. I tried keto a year ago and went from 247 to 217 somewhat quickly but as a competitive powerlifter I simply didn't have the energy I needed to put my body through the workouts. I have definitely still kept my carbs lower and chosen better sources and I'm currently around 227 lbs. Congrats on your success.

@@JW0143 But I didn't give up an entire food group - I still eat low carb veggies, which do have carbs. Cheese and nuts have some carbs. But even if I had, carbs are NOT an essential food group, whereas fats and proteins are. I lost 108 lbs. eating a high (unrefined) carb diet 12 years ago, but I was hungry most of the time and it finally got to the point I was ravenous all the time, gave up and gained it all back plus 40 more over the years. My body is VERY insulin resistant and can't tolerate carbs. Fats are satiating and keep you full way longer, making it easy to fast with no jitters or blood sugar swings. So, you do your thing and I will do mine. There was no reason for you to "respectfully" scold me as I was only telling what worked for me.
@JW0143

@@musicluvrlaurie6827 Take it easy I wasn't scolding you I was simply saying that MOST people who move to keto are used to eating a very high carb diet (spaghetti, pizza etc) and when you cut those from your diet you will obviously lose weight. And it goes without saying that if you are doing IF you're essentially missing meals so bam weight loss. And I even said different things work for different people (so you saying you do your thing and I'll do mine was already covered) and congratulated you on your weight loss. If my post came off as scolding or judgmental I apologize.

@@JW0143 The other factor is how many macro and micro-nutrients are in one’s meals. If the nutrients are very low, and the caloric spent is the same, one will still have a poor performance and one will crave more foods. But for the same amount of calories, and energy spent, if one’s meals are way more nutrients rich, one won’t be craving and one’s performance will increase. I have seen this happening all the time on keto.

I am living in Italy, the normal flour is not fortified but you can find different tipe of flour to the supermarket which is "upgraded" for different uses. Anyway, I am "sensitive" to the gluten so I do my best not to consume it but here is an offense no to eat pasta. I discovered the sensitivity after 19 days of water fast, when I saw what is the thing that makes me feel like pregnant !!!

In 2012 I gave up sugar, carbs, and dairy, all one week apart. I found that it was easier for me to give up sugars then it was for me to give up the carbs. Well after 3 months, I had experimented and ate a few tablespoons of rice and was on the floor in so much pain afterwards. I've bever looked at a grain of rice the same way after that.

I appreciate your videos and I've learned some things. But also, on this particular topic, like you said there are different kinds of grains. More pure grains like organic spelt, for example, haven't been modified much by man. Their gluten is different too. It's very different from fortified bread. The main problem is not grains, it's what we do to them (and perhaps to some extent our modern lifestyles). People who exercise a lot, particularly endurance athletes, can't simply eat meat and fat. And even to feed the whole world, it's not viable to eat only meat and fat.
