What in holy heck?! October 18, 2023 brought a big surprise on New York, Susquehanna & Western's Utica NY branch: the Susquehanna borrowed an engine from the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern, the other railroad based in Utica. This has happened before but only very rarely.
The engine? No. 2042, a M420W manufactured by Montreal Locomotive Works, the Canadian subsidiary of the now defunct American Locomotive Company (ALCo). This engine is known by some as the "Atomic Engine" as it "starred" in an 1999 NBC miniseries called the "Atomic Train".
The title refers to a line by Slim Pickens in Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles".
No. 2042 joined NYS&W 3040, normally the only power stationed in Utica for most of the year, and helped switch local customers before heading to Sangerfield, 23 miles south Utica.
