Glad somebody’s finally talking about this story. One of my favorites from Harlan Ellison.

It's a very clever story. I had to read it 3 times before I really understood why I liked it. The theme of family ties is woven in very subtly but once you notice it it's very powerful. Even the name of the dog, blood, is like "flesh and blood", as a subtle hint.

I loved your analyst. I never wouldve connected the "family bonds/teenage rebel" bit myself. I think the relationship between blood and vic is more fraternal or symbiotic than anything paternal. Something more along the lines of "Where the red fern grows" where the 10 year old character has full resposibility for 2 dogs and takes them hunting. The cultural attitudes towards animal companionship was quite different in the time this story was written. "teenage rebel" seems a bit too modern for me. As dark as it is I got the impression this attitude of his was just the culture of the wasteland. (If anyone is a teen rebel its june as she actually is challenging her environment/parents, Vic is just living in his and acting as he always has when exposed to a new one.) I could be misunderstanding the trope though. I make this distinction because it makes the ending that much more poignant. Hes choosing his dear friend over love. I took the theme more as "true friendship". To piggy back on the name maybe "blood" is also the price vic has to pay. I hope this isnt rude or in any way to discredit your analysis merely inspired me to write up my own thoughts. I think its interesting how we can have different conclusions on media like this.

Great thoughts, love your interpretation! I agree on the sibling part actually, come to think of it. Like a child who has been largely raised by a sibling so they have this unique multifaceted relationship.
